Daniel is about to sign a 5yr $3.2m deal with us fyi. Not sure why we are handing out huge deals to players now. It’s not been our policy for a long time but apparently that’s changing.

Don’t bank on us having much cash to chase big list needs. The recruitment of JUH and Darcy Jnr will be assets in 5 years time but crippling to us right now. Very difficult list management position to be in.
That’s the new norm now that free agents sign the long term deals

That’s a pretty reasonable deal though of around $640k, when you consider the cap will keep going up.

+1 This, we can cover the small forward role with what we have.

We straight up need two AFL ready KPD's and a ruck, and honestly if we have to give up a midfielder like Dunkley or even ******* Bailey Smith to do it, so be it.

I'd be in the ear of Pearce, Hamling, Marshal, Sicily, honestly, anyone who'll listen and fills the role.
We could have had Dante Visentini a 201 cm KPD with some serious mongrel about him, plus we had a free hit at Charlie Dean another KPD with our 5th rounder who is tracking really well at the pies(besides the injury of course). Both of these players could have been developing and most likely a better option than what Cordy/Shaq are offering.
We should have offered shaq as extra to the pies in the lippa deal, and I would have been happy to take back roughy.

Yes but he’s also 100% peaked with his capacity to play football. The Daniel we have right now is best case scenario the Daniel we have for another 5 years. There is no further development available.

I agree, it’s a good deal but there are big risks attached to that long a term with the limitations he possesses as a player.

It is my view that we should’ve given up Dunks to get a high pick and use that pick to draft a KPD. Could’ve picked up that Grainger-Barrass.

I'm still in the Brayden Crossley camp. Would cost us nothing to sign, pinch hit forward/ruck. 198cm 102kgs and arguably the 'best of the rest' ruck/forwards outside of the AFL system right now.

If Sweet's lack of forward craft is keeping him out of the senior side right now - having Crossley to tandem with gives Sweet more time forward to develop his craft at VFL level.

In the past two drafts our options to recruit and trade for KPDs and rucks have been limited due to needing all our resources to secure JUH and Darcy. I'm sure none of us would question this.
In the 2020 National Draft our 2nd and only other pick was 55 - Bedendo. In the Rookie draft we got McNeill at pick 11 and R Smith at pick 26. There were no KPDs or rucks drafted at or below our picks.
In the 2021 National Draft our 2nd pick was 43 - Jones and our 3rd 61 - Cleary.
We could have drafted Visintini (56) instead of Jones but I guess we had that position covered with Darcy. In the Rookie Draft we could have got Charlie Dean or Levi Casboult, the latter I'm sure we wouldn't go near.
Instead of Dean we opted for Parker which may have been the wrong call particularly when Dean had huge upside following his best Under 23 state player award.
I haven't mentioned the pre-season trade periods e.g to recruit a ruckman, where indeed, a few ruckmen moved clubs, but again we were hampered by the need to retain points for Darcy.
We did trade in O'Brien which was a step in the right direction but to fill the outstanding gaps on our list from here we are going to have give up quality to get quality.

Whatever it takes to have a chance in the middle. At the minute, we may as well just concede and have no ruck.

I think English is going to be an amazing ruck/forward ages 27/28-32.

right now and for the next couple of years we have to suffer those periods like last night and late last year where we get smashed in HOs to advantage.

Given the age of our prime movers, should we trade him if a big offer came at years end? if he's getting his 20 plus possies all year his value will be extremely high.

More than happy with Daniels output at that price, he’s a tremendous player and a point of difference to most teams. 25 years old, zero injury history, no brainer imo.

I struggle to rate English's impact on the game. It's so frustrating because if he was your average run of the mill tap ruckman, then he's almost close to the best ruck in the comp with what else he is bringing. It makes no sense that someone that tall, athletic & reasonably strong gets destroyed on a weekly basis. I simply want him to break even and that's good enough.

And presuming that West Coast would be the obvious suitor, the way that their year looks to be heading, they may well have a top three draft pick.

What makes them crippling in your opinion? Yes we had to give up our draft hands but as you said we don’t have big cash to throw around anyway so what would we have done with the picks?

The only thing that has crippled us is the reluctance to fix our own issues - I don’t buy taking Jamarra and Darcy has stopped us looking at the multiple tall defenders and ruckman who have swapped clubs over the past 3 years for donuts that we have barely even enquired about. No ones saying we need to bring in Moore & NicNat but **** there’s been options every single year that improve us that could have been managed with our cap & draft situations.

We have made zero effort, and frankly it’s almost a sackable offence for whoever is behind this decisions - to be completely honest.

Lienert playing for the Saints this weeekend.
Another name mentioned as a potential trade, ended up costing the saints nothing. Plays more of a running role than pure KPD role but worth watching.
Sam Skinner playing for Port too.

I agree but what he does bring is ****ing awesome - it’s completely on us to not use him correctly. 17 coaches in the league last night could see that English, on his own, would struggle against an absolute brute of a ruck in Pittonet who wore him down, and a super athletic De Koning who gets a free pass as the chop out when Tim’s just busting his ass off.

Either Bevs a ****ing idiot or it’s at the point where he’s put so much into this idea of his that we can forgo the ruck and win, that if he backtracks now he looks stupid. Which one is it? I don’t believe he’s that dumb personally.

I’m not defending Tim’s work in the centre square because it’s obviously not good enough, but **** we’ve seen before it’s really not that bad when he’s on level playing field with the oppo ruckman and is getting a break and a proper chop out. He has the potential to be one of the most damaging utilities in the game yet we’re using him as a ****ing battering ram. It’s unforgivable at this stage.

It’s an issue that English himself apparently sees himself as a number 1 ruck and doesn’t want to be a utility.

Still pissed that Adams left for Brisbane for more opportunities when all I remember is him been constantly injured the entire time on our list. Would be good just to have him in our backline, definitely have a lot of good players that are made to look worse because they lack the support.

Sam Skinner seemed like an obvious option for us to take a punt on.

Nah I’m not buying that at all, Tim’s not stupid - there is one club in the league who would play Timmy as a lone ruck right now and that’s us. If he wants to be lone ruck then his only other option is for Claremont possibly.

If Timmy leaves I 100% believe it will because we have not supported him with another ruck and allowed him to be the best player he could be. If I was him I would be out the door ASAP

I highly highly doubt Timmy likes going out there week in week out getting butchered and if he actually thinks this is progressing his career then he’s a flipping idiot. He doesn’t have to be a utility he can still be a ruckman first & foremost but he needs a partner. There’s wanting to be first ruck and there’s wanting to ruck 95% of a game and I can guarantee you he doesn’t want the second option.

And either way it’s not an issue what he wants, couldn’t care less what he wants - we need to do what’s best for the team and if he’s not interested in doing that then I have literally zero care factor of him leaving

We should absolutely not trade English. Unless he requests it. We have put so much time into him and he’s starting to now repay us. He has the ability to be a force as a ruck / forward. And is only 24.

He was one of our best last night, despite some questionable ruck work. He’ll be worth the wait and has improved this season massively already.

Agree. Watch the ruck contest immediately after English kicks his goal. He’s playing angry and pumped up and doesn’t give a **** who he’s jumping against and absolutely pumps the ball out of the middle. It went to a Carlton player but only out of sheer chaotic luck.

Him playing with aggression and confidence creates an entirely new player. The bloke is 208cm and 115kg pretty comfortably. And could feasibly still put on 10kg of muscle without it affecting his mobility. He’s going to be huge.

He just needs a ruck partner that compliments him. Darcy is probably the prototype but is 3 years too young atm.
