Our key back is 30 and has hammy issues, our captain 26, Jack 27, Hunter 27, Libba 30 also and Bruce 29 as is Ads.
Our window will close within 3-4 years for most, if not b4.
We must be willing to give up something. I’d prefer not Dunks as he’s got to take over Libba’s role imo.
If Schache isn’t seen as a viable kpd then he’s got to be let lose as playing spare parts isn’t helping his game and I don’t see room as an forward at full strength, Daniel can be replaced (Ed really starting to blossom) and would free up decent coin.
Martin will be gone but frees up SFA as would letting West go.
Duryea is 31 and no need for both him and Crozier (26).
Williams seems to be missing Wood’s direction down back,as they all are, and maybe has currency and frees up a bit but he may improve again with a settled back 6.
JJ and Hannan are the 2 that have me in a quandary. Both have pace, both are 29. JJ either has some serious calf issues, which doesn’t bode well for a player reliant on speed, or something not leaked. Hannan has had injury concerns and now concussion problems. He’s got speed and I like the hybrid role he plays. Either or both would free up space.
I haven’t included Cordy as he’s 25 and I like the cut of his jib and ads depth. Same for Roarke who doesn’t shirk whatever is thrown at him. I’d keep him on the fringes.
The like of Vanders, McNeill, Scott free up bugger all cap space so what ever happens, happens there. I’ve already got 5-7 I’d look at letting go. That may permit a crack at a KPD, state league ruck or interstate cap space for Dunks, Timmy, Gardner and co.

PS. No mention of Wally as he can chose his path. Maaaan I just love that guy.

Its almost like we dont have a pair of talls who went 1 and 2 in the last 2 drafts developing at Footscray.

Yeah, his form is near delisting levels in the SANFL. He would be okay as a free hit though. He adds more to the bottom end of the list than some of our bottom 5.
I'm impartial to recruiting him.

He showed some very good signs in his first year.

We've had some strong hits with new mature players coming in to our system.

I tend to agree about Caleb but I think he’ll re-sign. Dale is almost the best rebounding defender in the league now and seems to have overtaken him. I also think Ed can continue to progress with his offensive game meaning our need for Caleb as a quarterback is diminished. When you add in his obvious size limitations in the backline, it’s something to think about.

Caleb is obviously a fantastic player but I’m uncomfortable paying $600k+ long term in a position where he has some major deficiencies as well as being able to cover him.
I agree we can cover him down back and his limitations are starting to hurt us - I want to see him in a full time half forward role now, and not just thrown there in games like we like to do with him but settle him into the role for a bit and see what happens.

Easier to hide someone at HF as oppo won’t play through him like they do in defence - you don’t want him in an aerial contest? Simple, don’t kick it to him. Won’t be as high production but if you get 15 touches out of him a week at half forward you’re bound to have 4+ direct score assists, he can push high up the ground just want him at ground level at every aerial contest in the front half of the ground. He’s pretty crafty around goals out of the stoppages too.

No he’s not quick and might get burnt a bit but he’s no slower or worse aerially than Libba who we constantly rest there. So long as we’ve got smalls that can apply pressure alongside him you can carry one that doesn’t so long as they’re a massive gain offensively.

I want to see it for an extended period. His contract is interesting though, what do you pay for a player like that? I don’t really think any clubs are going to offer him big money though and I feel he’d be the type happy to stay around long term on slightly less than he could get elsewhere. A 5yr/500k contract gets him a good guaranteed wicket into his 30s - and I think we’d be able to work around that too

From what I was told yesterday the departure of King and Hansen has left a huge void in terms of strong enough voices to influence Bevo. The club is aware of the problem.

I think Cameron or Simpson or another very senior coach in an assistant role may be the answer. Look at what bringing in Mark Richardson did for Melbourne.

Cameron is a shout, Simpson is too good of a coach to be an assistant

I hope you’re right love Bevo but quality support with the courage of conviction to challenge is what’s needed for the benefit of our club our players and his own development imo.

Is Bevo open to that do you have any hunch/idea?

Get Leon Cameron! The guy has had a dream list that has underperformend. But given the entitlement that list had, he's done a good job of keeping the group together and has been a net asset for GWS. Pretty good match day coach too.

Don’t know but Bevo has mentioned lifting the soft cap to adequately resource the football department.

In any case, It should not be up to Bevo, Chris Grant and Ameet Bains need to step in and tell him this is how it is going to be.

This season is obviously shot. For 2022 we back in Sam Darcy to become a tandem act with Tim just hope he can be a Luke Jackson in his second season. We also need to back in Jamarra to form a good forward line with Astro and Bruce. So our most pressing needs are a wingman, a tall defender and another small forward unless Arthur Jones can be one. Play it again you Sam find us what we need.

5 years for Caleb is just too much risk for mine. Would rather pay overs per year for a shorter length ($650k/3 years).
I’m the opposite, save on money per year but offer the longer length. Reason being Caleb is safe as houses as a player, we pretty much know what we’re going to get out of him week in week out, he’s durable, doesn’t rely on athleticism or speed, he’ll probably play well into his 30s without really dropping off imo

Western Bulldogs will scour the league for a prime key defender to bolster its back line for next year’s premiership tilt.
The Bulldogs are in the market for a strong-bodied key backman such as Fremantle’s Griffin Logue to address the defensive vulnerabilities which have been exposed this season.

Out-of-contract Brisbane big man Dan McStay could also be an option to help boost the Dogs key position stocks.

Luke Beveridge’s men have lost 37 per cent of their defensive contests – ranked 18th in the league.

They have also conceded 39 goals to key forwards this year – ranked 13th.

Former coach Rodney Eade said it was the obvious missing link for the Dogs after slipping to 10th spot with three wins from eight games ahead of Friday night’s crunch clash against Collingwood.

“When they play against good teams, that is going to catch them out,” Eade said on RSN.

“I know Luke has probably bristled at that in the past about tall defenders but going forward they need to really sit down and plan about how we are going to get some tall defenders in.”

Complicating matters is the salary cap squeeze on at the kennel as the Dogs attempt to re-sign a host of stars including Bailey Smith, Caleb Daniel, Tim English, Bailey Dale and Josh Dunkley.

Hard nut midfielder Dunkley, 25, would help free up salary cap space if he sought another trade request after failing to get to Essendon, but the club has held positive talks with him on a new deal.

Should Western Bulldogs sacrifice a midfielder to bolster their defensive stocks?

Bulldogs’ list manager Sam Power also faces a tricky challenge finding the right man to beef-up the back end from the players potentially available this year.

In particular, the new stand rule has left backmen exposed and the Dogs’ reliance on their midfield to support the back line has fallen down this year after making last year’s Grand Final.

Logue looms as an attractive option but the Dogs would face a fight to land him as the 24-year-old has recently re-established himself as a key pillar in one of the best defences in the competition.

Likewise his Dockers’ teammate Alex Pearce, 26, remains out of contract at season’s end and has the ability to push for All-Australian selection throughout his prime according to former coach Ross Lyon.

The Dogs will also consider other injury-hit players and key forward options who could make the switch into the back line such as former Carlton stopper Liam Jones or Demon Sam Weideman.

Adelaide 197cm defender Fischer McAsey, a former pick six, has been on the outer at the Crows, Carlton’s Caleb Marchbank has returned from injury through the VFL, Melbourne’s Joel Smith is out again with injury, while Essendon’s Aaron Francis is a left-field candidate.

Demon Harrison Petty (2025), West Coast’s Tom Barrass (2026), Cat Jack Henry (2024) and Richmond’s Noah Balta (2023) have all recently recommitted.

The Dogs will prefer a taller key defender instead of a third option or smaller marking intercept player to fill the void on their list.

It is the clear priority for the club which has lost former Hawk Tim O’Brien to another soft tissue setback after securing him from Waverley last year.

Alex Keath, 30, will replace him in the team after overcoming a hamstring problem.
Wouldn't mind the idea of doing a deal for Weideman from Melbourne and convert him into a KPD has the athletic traits. Still got a lot of years ahead of him

If we do remain a relatively average side and have a pick in the 8-10 range, looking at some of Jedd Busslingers work, considered the best interceptor in the draft, and a good size, hopefully we can nab him. We desperately need that young key defender coming through and he looks the modern athletic type. Drafting him and even using a future first/second rounder or going through free agency, bringing in a mature key defender is also a priority.

I reckon North's taking him. Not sliding below pick 5 at the latest.

He’s pushing top 5 but he’s ideal.
