He's pretty poor depth, injured far too often. I'd rather give the list spot to someone else.

We have Lobb coming in, he can play as a 1st ruck if necessary.
This, we can’t just keep Stef Martin on the list indefinitely & say we’ve got ruck depth 😂 he can’t get on the park. Sweet is good depth, ridiculous that we were giving Martin games over him already this year. All Martin is doing is hampering Sweets development in the 2s for no reason, draft another young ruckman to come up under Sweet who actually has some upside

How? Gets him more time forward to work on his forward craft that he lacks. Martin is then not included in the soft cap

Would make more sense to give beloved comedy legend Steve Martin a 1 year contract as back up Ruckman.

On field impact would be similar, but would do wonders for our international exposure.
It could be his special purpose!

The only thing is - and I'm not 100% sure on the soft cap rules - we can actually afford to go over on the soft cap right now.

Our debt is low, income is ok - with this list - now is the time for a few extra coaches and advisors etc - to take advantage of it.

Not hiding 800 yr old retiree's on the playing list FFS. Give us 42 actual players - not ****ing McComb, Martin etc... You never know, we might win another flag....

Man I want Hunter Clark on the wing, would happily on-trade one of our late firsts from Brissy with maybe a late pick back from Saints for points
We can throw in Josh Schache as well given they’re apparently interested. Potentially unlocks the Saints pick #45 to go to Brisbane.

I wouldn’t mind the new Martin deal if we weren’t already wasting list spots on a few players that are not KPP’s and have low ceilings
Yep you can’t have both Martin and a new Footscray plodder while still carrying McComb. If Martin stays that needs to be the Footscray spud allocation.

I was a bit frustrated to read the suggestion that we may be keeping Martin, but honestly, I think I'll wait until our list is complete this off-season before being too critical.

Sydney obviously doesn't have the dead weight on the list that we do (or at least to my eye they don't), but they've managed to carry Callum Sinclair and Sam Naismith for a couple of years (for different reasons, obviously).

How did Stef Martin’s coaching duties go last year ?

If anything our rucks went two steps forward one step back , if not full reverse .

I’m not blaming Stef Martin for that but while he seems like a super smart , articulate bloke that doesn’t mean he’s going to make a massive difference to English and Sweet’s ruck prowess . Or lack of it.

I’d trade trade Sweet and Martin for an actual ruck , and use the change to buy English a long consistent NutriBullet of bone broth based intestinal fortitude.

I'm not sure how you can say Timmy went backwards. Even accounting for some games as a forward at the start of last year, his ruckwork improved immensely.

As a player he’s on the up, but my god he’s inconsistent. Can we afford to keep going with an inconsistent Tim? How much longer does he need?

On a side note to that, there were so many times this season where the side would wrestle momentum back in a game, kick a couple in a row, then we’d have Cordy or Bruce in the next centre square ruck stoppage and Tim off resting. Absolutely kills momentum. And that’s on the coaches. It’s been a debacle in the ruck.

The 4 prelim final ruckman were Stanley, McInerney, Hickey and Cox. They were all borderline delists at 24. Rucks peak years are 28-31. Tim is way ahead of the curve and will be an absolute gun.

You just know if we get Lobb and Tim’s injured we’ll go with Lobb first ruck & Bruce etc 2nd ruck - which is why keeping Martin (if true) annoys me, it’s just our method of continuing to neglect using assets on rucks.

You should always have young ruckmen developing, can pick them up for cheap and they take time. Sweets great depth, never gets injured and comes in and can play to his usual average level. With a draftee developing underneath him.

If you keep Martin he’s just wasting a spot & Sweet & the draftee are wasting away in the same forward line. As others have said I’m not buying how much input he has as a playing coach, I’d prefer an extra list spot & cap space

Just on the professionalism piece....I do occasionally like a jar of ale and have been known to frequent a certain pub in Yarraville. On many a school night I have seen dogs players enjoying themselves. I always found it odd that professional footballers would be drinking 2/3 days before a big game...say versus port in Adelaide. 2 of the players I saw played appallingly.

Agreed on all.

The Martin rumours can’t be true surely? We surely can’t afford to waste a list spot due to soft cap?
I am so OVER our soft cap if that’s the real reason.

Tim may be but not as a ruckman. You need to have even a tiny bit of aggression as a ruck.
Stanley is still a dud. I’ll give you Hickey. Cox & mcinerney were second or third stringers not like English who is supposed to be our 1st.
Assuming Mcinerney only rucked cos Reid(who smashed English last time) went off.

McInerney plays for Brisbane, he's their #1 Ruck.

How many times does this point need to be made. English will be close to best player in league in 3 yrs…his physical peak is still 4 yrs away..when he is 28 he will make mince meat of the 22-25 yr old rucks…I reckon he assumes number 1 ruckman in the comp next yr. Bookmark it.
