I was thinking more about trying to recruit for needs. We didnt need Treloar
His GF efforts have been mentioned, but with Dunkley walking I'd have one of Treloar or Baz in the centre at all times.
He has genuine burst ability, ditto Baz. It changes the way other teams would have to set up as they have to sweep to cover our ability to get a fast clearance. He is a good player and has suddenly become a lot more valuable. Bont/Libba/Macrae/Baz/Treloar suddenly becomes a good mix.

Makes the recruitment of a mid (if best available) perfectly acceptable too given Libba and Treloar's longevity.

The Lobb trade could just be a three way swap with GC included.

Dogs gain: Lobb Dogs lose: pick 30 or F2
Freo gain: Sharp Freo lose: Lobb
GC gain: Pick 30 or F2 GC lose: Sharp
In an ideal world, yep.
I'd say Freo want more - especially if they want our Lobb currency to use on Jackson

Power has done so in the past and assume he will this time. He is also not in the habit of overpaying, just think Freo aren't getting a 15-22 pick for Lobb.
Pick 30 is not an unreasonable offer for a near 30 year old
I expect our pick gets moved up a few spots then we offer a mid-20s pick for Lobb

If anything pick 30 is overs for a solid but not elite player with probably only two good seasons left in him.

Three reasons (not in any special order) to pay more than 30 would be
1. To keep faith with a commitment we might have made to Lobb
2. Show the other 800+ players and managers we routinely get deals done (unlike Brisbane and Essendon) so we’re worth nominating as a destination
3. We see him as an indispensable component of our push for a flag (personally I don’t but the club might)

We've made the commitment a long way out, and he's contracted.
Uncontracted he's worth substantially less. I don't thin 21 gets used on Lobb but mid 20s - overs - I'd guess we gain a pick there and put it on the table at some point in the next week.

I see the headlines now...

'Bitter Bulldogs refuse to deal'

'Pickering slams Dogs for blocking Dunkley trade'

'Sad Dunkley denied Brisbane wish'

'Strong Dogs hold firm over fair price for Dunkley'.....

Wait, that last headline is what would happen if we were Geelong.
It's all about dollars.
Just as it's good business for Pickering to blame the dogs for not doing the deal, so he can maximise his earning, it is also good business for the helplessly uncreative and content desperate dongos on trade radio to side with those pushing the deals.
Clubs are obliged to deal with the media, best way to get guys like Pickering on the air is to side with them and push their agendas.

Easiest way to fix is to not listen, someone out there obviously enjoys their dribble though.

It’s a bit of a weird situation where Grundy suits us better than Lobb, and Lobb suits Melbourne better than Grundy
Only thing I can think of is that either Timmy and/or the club see him as a #1 ruck. We take Grundy and Timmy’s nose might get out of joint.

I guess maybe Grundy really wants Dees and not us at all ?

Mines Callum Ward, he was set up to be our captain.
His brother Callan went to GWS. Can’t blame him as he was getting and extra 300k a year on a long contract. Was just too good to refuse.
His last game there was the odd boo but buy the 2nd half he had most of the crowd on his side as we understood.
My least liked was Templeton and then Lake/Brown

Hahaha yet we are going though the some crap with Dunkley were is our article.

LOBB URGED TO CONSIDER OTHER VIC OPTIONS

Does Rory Lobb need to open up his list of Victorian suitors to beyond the Western Bulldogs?

Trade talks between the Dockers and Bulldogs are at an impasse for the key forward, with Fremantle knocking back an offer of Pick 29 – set to move back to selection 30 or 31.

It comes with Lobb contracted for next season as Fremantle has remained steadfast that it wants to retain the 29-year old despite his trade request to move to Victoria, where he’s already purchased a home and his partner and her family have relocated to.

Speaking on SEN, Dockers great Paul Hasleby backed up club list boss David Walls’ claim that if a player nominate to return to Victoria, they shouldn’t be able to choose which
That’s an interesting point because if the Dockers open it up to every Victorian club ... there’s nine clubs in Melbourne and one down the road in Geelong,” he said.

“Right now the pick coming fourth for Rory Lobb from the Western Bulldogs is not suitable (for Fremantle). I think a bit will play out with Josh Dunkley, so they may acquire some good picks that can be used on Rory Lobb.

“But if Rory Lobb really wants to get to Melbourne and live there, surely he maybe has to broaden his horizons and Fremantle can see if there’s a better deal that suits them and really tempts them to make that deal.

“Because they’re better him with him in that line-up. Take him out of that group then I think it’s not as strong and probably puts you in the bottom four in terms of key forward groups in the competition.”

It’s not like we seduced Lobb into breaking his contract & then couldn’t get a deal done - ala Essendon.

We’re doing him a favour to get him back to Melbourne so if Freo don’t want to deal that sucks for us & Lobb but I don’t think it’s fair to say we need to commit at any cost.

I suspect it gets done and he’ll be a very good pickup

Can’t argue with that. Up to us what we are willing to pay. He’s contracted to Freo so they are in control.

Dunks not contracted but ours to trade. We’d happily deal with Suns if they offered more than Brisbane.
If players want to use the home factor then do as Jackson has done. Whilst we assume he wants Freo, he’s left the door open by just nomination WA.

So did Lobb’s manager approach us asking could he play for us?
My bet is we approached him, most likely early in the year after he failed to get back to GWS last year.

My guess is Lobb gets done eventually for 30 + a small pick shuffle in Freo’s favour. I’d be perfectly happy with that

Yeah if it's 30 and a swap of third round picks then it's fine. Probably not a huge difference either way although I'd rather keep our third rounder from North since it's basically a second round pick.

If I were a betting man I would say we were committed to Lobb since last year.

They could rewrite that article about Dunkley
