I'll bite... is there?

The last player that was desperate to get home had a young family (Tim Kelly).

We have to go back to Hamling who had a sick father, or Jayden Schofield who kept his testicles in his partner's handbag, to find equivalents for us.

Even Patrick Cripps whose (ill,) GF is from WA and his brother plays there signed a contract extension.
Marcus Adams did get 'homesick' and ended up in... Brisbane.
Man
I was a huge fan of Schofield, really wish he didn't leave

Would have love to see how his career went

Luke Jackson, Tim Tarranto, Izac Rankine to name a few from last season. Not sure come home factor was the only reason but sure it played a part.

Luke Jackson is fair (although the cash was huge), the others weren't heading to WA

Wouldn’t surprise me if Sydney are one club that are interested in Naughton they have history going after big name forward from other club.
Guess what????

Go and Tighten their Defence!!!!

Would have preferred management to say very happy and looking to put pen to paper at the end of the season. My guess is if one or both were to go and not take another contract it would be only to a WA team for the go home factor. For Andrew McDougall to say reasonable happy is a down grade, before Tim signed his last contract he said he was extremely happy. It could mean:

Nothing at all still got this season and next to run.
Bargaining position to stay and get a better deal for his clients.
One or both are looking to go home at some stage and it may be at the end of their contracts.

I do not want to lose either but it would be great to know a year in advance what they are going to do. Especially with WCE holding number 1 pick and Harley Reid being the prize and we broker a deal a year before the contract expires. i hope they stay to lose both would be a huge loss to lose one and gain Harley Reid would soften the loss a lot.
I'd prefer management to come out and say both players will never leave the club under any circumstances and neither are motivated by money at all. In fact both would sign in for a rookie contact if that's all that was offered.

The reality is that a players manager is never going to lay their cards in the table like that, regardless of their clients intentions. It would completely undermine their bargaining position. Managers have to make clubs feel like there's a chance a player might leave if they don't get a reasonable contract.

I wouldn't read into it at all.

Top mid-season pick to have trickle-down effect

There is still mystery around West Coast’s intentions with pick one in tonight’s mid-season rookie draft.
North Melbourne would almost certainly swoop at No. 2 on Gippsland Power and Box Hill forward Ryan Maric – the favourite to go first – if the Eagles go local instead with Claremont forward-ruck Jack Buller, or possibly Subiaco goalsneak Robert Hansen jnr.
The Roos may pivot to Hansen jnr or medium-sized defender James Trezise, who is having a breakout season for Richmond’s VFL side.
West Coast drafted Maric’s former Power teammate Coby Burgiel last year.
It would be a shock if Maric made it past Hawthorn, who are considering grabbing another Box Hill player, winger Ethan Stanley, with pick three. Eastern Ranges ruckman Tucker is another option for the Hawks.

The Western Bulldogs, Geelong, Fremantle and Port Adelaide have also kept tabs on Stanley. The Power are keeping an eye on Mitchito Owens’ older brother, Kai, too, a 193-centimetre midfielder playing for Frankston.
If Tucker makes it past Hawthorn, he is set to be a Tiger or Giant. Richmond, who will pick before Greater Western Sydney, are also considering Trezise and 196-centimetre Perth forward Jaiden Hunter. The Tigers could make a second selection, too.
Hunter started the WAFL season in the reserves, but has not stopped kicking goals, including a bag of five at the weekend to round out his AFL audition, with Essendon another potential landing spot.
One of the Bombers or Western Bulldogs may also hand a lifeline to ex-Melbourne defender Marty Hore, who has taken 23 intercept marks in his past three matches for Williamstown in the VFL.
The Swans are set to make two picks, one of which is set to be used on former Demon and Blues key defender Oscar McDonald. They are also considering recruiting midfielder Callum Brown, who is averaging 32 disposals for Box Hill, as they deal with an injury crisis.

Former Sydney ruckman Sam Naismithis poised to join Geelong, and Fremantle would likely take Hansen jnr if he makes it to them.
North Adelaide’s Noah Casalini has mid-season draft admirers and, like Hunter, slotted five goals this past weekend, while giant Northern Bullants forward Brandon Ryan offers upside for a club in need of a key forward.

Pretty much no one knows wtf is happening then...

I always found it a bit unusual for English to only sign a 2 year deal considering the talent he is added with the lengthy concussion injuries he's suffered.

Dogs aren’t going to voluntarily go into a rebuild by trading out a top 5 player. English is an elite ruck who we have spent years developing.

Your suggestions of trading a player a year before RFA are meaningless when the only return is an upgrade to a “magic bean”. I would rather keep English for another year where the flag window is wide open, than lose him for the crap you eagles fans think he is worth.

Please respect OUR board and take your rebuild mantra elsewhere.

How am I disrespecting this board by stating the obvious. All clubs go up and down in a cycle. It's just how the AFL has set things up. I have said the Dogs will be contending for years to come. That is being respectful as they have a good list ATM.

And at no point did I suggest the Dogs would volunteer to trade him.

The discussion was would the club consider a pre agency trade to get a better deal? With an assumption the player was tempted and willing to move. If so what would be fair compensation for the Dogs. What would be a win win scenario!

Most on here have answered your question that in no shape or form would the club consider trading English at the end of the year.

There’s probably no situation that turns out a win for the Dogs if we’re losing English any earlier than we need to. The Eagles aren’t paying Pick 1 for him, future picks do nothing to help us in the immediate future, and we have no decent ruck options after him.

Unless a straight swap for Pick 1 was on the table (unrealistic), we’re better off keeping him and getting lower compensation next year but at least having a more competitive team for 2024

Players are now signing until they become FAs as they can expect a healthy contact boost at that point even if they stay, simply due to the competition factor. Bailey Williams is a FA this year for example

Herald Sun reporting up to 8 clubs are circling English and Naughton.

A quote from their manager saying they are “reasonably happy” at the club but will wait until the end of the season before opening discussions.

Hopefully the money saved from Dunkley can go some way to helping re-sign both.
Sounds like a player manager doing his job and drumming up the best offer possible from us

I'd argue a straight swap for pick 1 still doesn't help us. Harley will no doubt be a great player, just how good is unknown however English is in his prime and a top 3 ruck in the comp (arguably number one). With English gone that leaves us with sweet as our ruck. For a team who's premiership window is right now giving up a top 3 player for an 18 year old is insanity.

It's a pretty big risk in English's case though. He signed the contract after his 2nd lengthy concussion injury.

The short term we're absolutely worse, so yeah I'd understand people still having hesitation even if Pick 1 were on the table. Long term, who knows. You'd hope with the hype Reid has, his ceiling ends up higher than English but it's a complete unknown. For a team in the window with the list composition we've got, it's hard to justify any trades for English
