Good on McComb for getting drafted to the big time but he looks nothing more than a very good high grade local footballer / very good vfl player. Did he deserve the gig from the vfl? Yeah probably (if we are committed to picking one a year).

He’s a shocking kick, lacks penetration in his kick, is a horrible set shot and makes poor decisions. Something a winger/half forward shouldn’t have.

Is he tough and does he bee line the footy? Yep sure does but we have enough players who do it.

I applaud him for making it, but if we’re fair dinkum next year - he isn’t playing senior footy.

I don't think ever it's all doom at the dogs. However if they do make finals it's going to take a recovery of all their top players to win. Duyrea, English, Daniel, Richards & Bruce to go all the way.

There are enough posts/threads on here about Schache.
Effort and intensity you say? He's shown over the course of his career that he can't/ doesn't bring either consistently.
And not to the point of a "down game", but a genuine liability when his heart's not in it.
(For one reason or another).

You can't possibly include Khamis in this. Played 5 straight.

You can't possibly include Cordy in this.

JUH is finding his way.

Basically, it's not possible to have the "We're in the window, we need to win" and the "give them a go, they'll come good" mindset.
They don't gel.

As for McComb specifically, tell me who you'd play instead?
Genuine question.

McComb should never have been picked to go on the Rookie list in the first place. Hayes type player we should have known better.
Once he got on there he was always going to get games to substantiate the pick on the Rookie list.

Bendendo, Garcia, Cleary, McNeil all should be playing ahead of McComb

We don’t use the Rookie list well IMO.
Go for a developing big body tall or 2 high risk, high reward at a low cost.

I dunno how many times I have to say this but McComb isn’t even a good contested player, he’s very poor in the contest. Running with your head down into a contest doesnt make you good - he’s sloppy, can’t ride a tackle and release a handball, cant tackle, zero presence in the air. For someone whose supposedly “brings the heat” as his main go he’s very very poor at it, just a bewildering decision to keep him in the side

Yeah not overly keen on Lobb. Sure he would have been great tonight, but he could be a 3 year road block on Darcy.

Forget pushing Naughton back. What happens if Darcy develops quickly (which is every indication).

How do you fit English, Lobb, Darcy and JUH in the same side. With Bruce in the squad and Naughton.

Seems dumb. Get a key defender, get out entire team on the park and stop this stupid 5m rule.
I think Lobb will be good for us. He can help out around the ground and share the ruck with Timmy. Also he has a bit of mongrell about him, our players are just too nice.

Wrong - I saw him ride a tackle and handball to the opposition multiple times last night.

Completely on the money here - his disposal by foot is awful but it was his lack of ability to get a clean handpass out that really stood out this week.

I thought he was improving but McComb was an absolute turnover machine by hand and foot last night.

i cannot believe I f*n fell for this again - the campaigner is an absolute magician, he’ll be on a list til 35 even though he’s genuine garbage

Nice skills but very slow and timid. You can’t add mongrel into someone. You either have it or you don’t.
I think it was psychological with Schache. I was talking to a close relative of his last week, and was told that when he played for Brisbane he actually got death threats, he had to get protection. Something happened when they played the Gold Coast some incident that the club never dealt with and was the reason he wanted out. Was also mentioned they are not a close unit up there players train with headphones on, not friendly, although this might have changed now.

Why does everyone think Dunkley is leaving? Because he hasn’t signed on yet?

He's been saying for two years that he's changed his mind and will re-sign. That's far too long to keep talking without any action. The coach adores him, there's no chance he's last on the pile of big re-signings if we have it our way. He's stalling and has been for two years. Gone.

Never said give them all a go and never specifically mentioned this year, it’s been a trend for years. There is less patience for talls from our selection committee.

As for McComb I’d play plenty ahead of him.

Play Cleary back and push Williams into McCombs position.

Bedendo showed more in a half than McComb has so far so he’s an option.

Would have played Garcia ahead of him rather than as sub.

Would have played crozier ahead of him and pushed Daniel higher up to use his kicking.

McNeil offers more upside in terms of ability to develop.

Roarke for all his limitations works harder, defends better and is more desperate so would play him ahead of McComb too.

But aren't you being totally subjective?

We don't give (gift) talls continuous games which is bad.
We have given someone a run of games who I don't rate, which is bad.

Whilst I do appreciate you giving me some examples of how you'd rather set up, all of those options would cause as many issues. Both onfield and here online.

Schache's been with us 5 years and the same words are being written about him right now as throughout those 5 years. His most promising season was 2019 when he kicked 24 goals but since then he has been in and out of the side on a regular basis. As many others have said, he occasionally excites and gives hope but the consistency is never there particularly against teams that can apply pressure. I think the club will not offer a contract extension this time around.

I’ll take you back to round one 2019. We played the swans at marvel (with the marvel kit). First quarter right on the siren Schache beelined straight through Aliir and absolutely smashed him. Was a huge hit. Thought he’d turned a corner after that. But just hasn’t sadly. Picks and chooses when he wants to be a tad more physical.

Surely this is on the money.

Yeah, this. The fact McComb has played so many consecutive games is an indictment on our team selection. He’s a walking turnover and should have no place in a side in/around the top half of the ladder.

I’m all for Lobb coming too. We might have more glaring weaknesses on our list (defensively) but this board has had countless debates about how we fill that KPF/second ruck role. Plug Lobb in and that disappears. There would be far worse players across the comp on $500k or more, that’s not an enormous salary for what he could bring as an established player.

If there isn’t a focus on improving our defensive personnel and reshaping the game plan in the off-season it’s simply negligent. It’s a glaring weakness and any good side will feast if we don’t dominate possession and territory for the vast majority of the game (which is unlikely). I suspect this will be brought into brutal focus in the coming month or so. I don’t know if some of the players mentioned in recent posts here are gettable, but personnel has to change somehow and so does our approach to game day. Imo there is no way a flag team has Gardner and O’Brien playing key defensive roles.

2016 had Fletcher Roberts and Hamling who weeks before looked like delist material .. so yeah..

Tbh I’m fed up with this being trotted out. That back six also had Morris, a prime Easton Wood and Boyd all marshalling the defence. Plus both of those players you’ve mentioned were better than Gardner and O’Brien imo - even though they weren’t great.

Moral of the story .. maybe you shouldn't be so quick to write off players

Not sure years of evidence is “quick”, plus I’d say context is important - maybe if Morris, Boyd and Wood were still playing Gardner could be carried. But the 2016 team didn’t have to deal with 6/6/6 or even things like the stand rule, so the one on one capabilities of KPDs wasn’t as important.

I’d say the moral of the story is that you need to assess players in the context of the current game, and the list/team they’re in. But sounds like we’ll agree to disagree (shocking for this board 😂).

Well, I hope he plays out of his proverbial arse for the rest of the season to maximise his trade balue.

My kingdom for Fletcher Roberts.
An intelligent defender with good skills.

I have heard that FR was the perfect teammate and clubman.
Minimal fuss and great person to have as a teammate and around the club.

Glad he was part of 2016
