Just opened up my Instagram feed to see a post from Baz of his bare upper torso. I think there’s a really complex situation going on here. On the one hand we’re told he’s matured, he doesn’t like the attention that fame brings. On the other hand, football provided the initial fame and the other enterprises have been born from that. In order to maximise and continue the off-field momentum, the guy needs to promote, promote, promote himself as a product and the consumables that branch from him. So while I don’t have a problem with him maximising his opportunities (none of my business what he does), it’s no longer clear to me if he is first and foremost a footballer or if he is now a ‘brand’.

This is the discussion I tried to raise a few weeks back and was shouted down.

Good luck.

“Business is all-consuming and such a pressure cooker, so it’s great to have football on weekends to provide a distraction” *being facetious here but I’m sure it’ll be lost on someone

IF we fleeced Geelong for Bailey Smith we could have two top ten picks or 4 in the first round. That'd be a good starting point in rebuilding our midfield and/or backline.

I don't want to trade Smith fwiw

It’s the off-season for him and in all honesty, I’d have my rig out all the time if it looked anything like his

Yep 100% aware that it’s the off season and my ramblings have a wider scope than today. I just feel a state of confusion about the guy. Again for the record, I don’t have any problem whatsoever with what he dies and when he does it. I just can’t tell what he is these days. Is he now trapped in a cycle of 24/7 promotion? If his football career ended tomorrow would he drift into obscurity because he’s no longer Baz the AFL player or is he now a recognisable brand that eclipses football? I hope I’m making sense here!

I almost googled "Damian Barrett Bailey Smith" to see what he said, but then realised he's probably just making this shit up to get me to do exactly that. Not falling for it this time Damian, you'll get no precious clicks from me.

Is it poor list management to have all of Baz, English, Marra, Naughty coming out of contract in the same year? Arguably our 4 highest paid players outside of Bont. Not like anyone has jumped out of nowhere, except maybe Marra but even that could have been expected with hindsight.

I dunno maybe it absolutely wasn’t possible, but I would have liked to see us try to stagger those contracts if at all possible. Leaves us in a position where if shit hits the fan we could find ourselves in an almighty shit sandwich, trying to maximise trades for 2+ out of contract stars

Who in our side should Baz pay be like say equivalent to?

I have English Naughton and Marra ahead of him in terms of pay.

Baz even when playing better his foot skills left a lot to be concerned about.

Everyone talks as though Baz’s contract will be or should be big I’m not as convinced

How do you compare Baz to Richards?

Maybe the club thought they could get it done earlier, a contract extension rather than new contract.

Yeah it’s a good question, after this year he probably shouldn’t be on as big a contract as we were expecting - I honestly don’t know where that lands with the new salary, but at the same time we absolutely cannot afford to lose him considering our midfield depth/youth.

It’s probably in everyone’s best interest he signs a short term 2 year contract which I’m guessing would take him to FA. Let’s us & him reassess his value.

At the end of the day it’s what the market dictates, considering the contracts floating around these days it wouldn’t surprise me if a club was to offer him big money and we have to go close. Again we just can’t afford to lose him, hopefully he’s keen to back himself in and earn a big deal.

Not if we get onto resigning them early enough which we’ve generally been good at in recent times. Everyone knew the new CBA was coming from next year so it’s probably deliberate from their managers. In Baz’s case he’d be stupid to negotiate a new deal off his 2023 form

The CBA was actually due to start this year

Also have to take into account the players wanting x numbers of years due to CBA being up
Sometimes list managers can't control that as player agents know when talks for better pay will begin
So they want their client to.get the max money

Was doing signings at Cotton On in the city during the week too, with the usual rock star reaction.

I just got depressed. I saw a “recyclables” post on the afl instagram about players from other clubs on grand final teams right now

Brisbane:
Charlie, Dunks, Neale, Daniher, mccarthy

That is incredible young talent recruiting.

Charlie, Dunks and Neale were all acquired as established very good players in their young prime. Daniher and McCarthy were known to be good but had injury histories.

When the hell have we been able to recruit a young, known to be very good player? The closest I can think of is Crameri. Despite a decade of saying we want to become a destination club

Agreed. When was the last time a big or even semi big name player requested a trade to us? Last one I can think of was Akermanis and that was 15 years ago. It's pathetic really.
