Surely if English goes, we keep Sweet?
Sweet is out of contract, English is contracted for next year.
If English wants out we may need to overpay Sweet to keep him (still likely to be on less dollars than Timmy though)

Sweet would deffinetly be on less then English, he has got a decent contract sitting in front of him at the moment and I believe he has softened on his position now that power have cooled on him and English is getting some strong Victorian interest.

So English is potentially out whether his gf stays in Perth or signs up with Craig Hutchison's latest fetish? Concerning, but not surprising with all the inside info and/or other allegations flying around.
I'm torn on English though - has had his best season, but still struggles against physical rucks. Think I'd still ultimately rather a talented (and likely AA) bird in the hand than draft pick/s and cap space in the bush.

I'm almost at the stage where I'd pull the trigger. Sell high.

The contending teams have either a 'battler' ruckman (Cameron, whatever the hell Port are doing) or a VFL discard rookied in the second round (Big O, rookied in English's draft). Draper and Marshall were also 2016 rookie picks. Only Melbourne buck the trend with Gawn... and last year they traded out mini-English in Luke Jackson.

The salary cap boost would be handy too. I was all aboard the 'keep English' train up until recently but this is his prime and toilers who target the body (e.g. the last two weeks) can nullify him. $400k players are nullifying our $1m ruckman weekly and can we make up that difference elsewhere? English's best asset is his mobility around the ground but that's largely required to fill holes in defence to support our below-average set of KPDs anyway

Can we train Smith to be our lockdown midfielder ?? Get him to spend all season as a tagger that can run away from his opponent if needed.
I've been calling for this for years! Has the pace and aggression to do it, forces him to be accountable defensively, and he'll still rack up a heap of possessions with his attacking instincts.

This would be the smartest thing the club could do.

And we need to get creative to compete.

Can’t see them having the balls to do it though.

I think alot wouldn't be happy with the likely picks we get for him though when you compare it to the pick 1 people were calling for on here a few weeks ago. A mid first rounder being the main part of the offer doesn't really fill the void for me.

Maybe but don't we need good young mids? He is our only one. Can't be shipping him out after some bad form. Most of the list should be traded if that is the criteria.
If it was just bad form I would definitely agree with you.

I will preface this by saying the club should 100% be supporting players who suffer from mental health issues.

Baz personality type is either 100 or 0. There is no in-between. Baz has described himself as a perfectionist. If everything is going right for him on & off field things are good. As soon as something goes wrong, which inevitably happens in life, he drops his head and can become self destructive.

For example, Baz talked about how he ate 800g of lollies, in the car just before the Melbourne game last year or how he would train like an animal Monday to Friday and go on a massive drinking binge every weekend after games.

In the end the club need to decide if it's wise to invest 800k + x 5 years into Baz. Is his personal makeup conducive to a high functioning team ? Will his self destructive tendencies improve or get worse with age ? Will he invest into the group and build genuine connections with his teammates or largely keep to himself as he has done to date?

These are the tough questions the club needs to ask itself before this year's trade period. It's not just a matter of his a young midfielder, we don't have many others we need to keep him.

You'd hope with age comes maturity.
E.g. Bont was mature in his approach from day one, Liber - while highly intelligent - made some fairly questionable decisions off field in his early years (although limited apparent impact to onfield performance).

Ultimately, they're all young men for a fair slice of their career, and everyone matures differently.

I'm not defending - or condoning - him btw, I still think he exhibits some obsessive tendencies he currently struggles to control. If he can tame them, at least where footy is concerned, is the big question I think.

IMO I think his tendencies will get worse with age.

The stories and things we hear is that he has gradually declined year on year since he entered the system.

I would maybe kill to get Ben Hudson in his prime into our team, he's the type of ruck that would be killing it for us.

Isn’t West Coast also interested in Jordan Sweet

Agnostic on any English trade.
No doubting his ability, but boy he can look way too passive at times.
not what you want in your ruckman.

A bit of Milton the Monster in him ( for those that remember )
Not enough of essence of terror & too much of touch of tenderness in the chemical makeup !

Tom Morris reporting that Bailey Smith will go if he doesn't get more midfield time
I love how it's being framed in the media that Baz may leave for midfield minutes not personal issue or club wanting him out. Keeps his trade value intact.

Kind of insane that Smith disgruntlement is due to lack of midfield time yet when he’s in there he’s either not bothering to run defensively or he is lacing out opposition players.

We need a lockdown mid to compliment Bont and Libba not a one way clanger merchant.

I laughed KH, but it's true.

Not sure how you instill that into him this far into his career though. Maybe the Robert Walls "put him in the middle of a circle and everyone punch him" tactic? (Not serious, btw.)

How do you make a passive, skilful giraffe so angry he starts throwing his weight around? 🤔

But that could be due to trying to force things when he eventually does get in there knowing his time is limited.

The two games he came into knowing he would play big midfield minutes he was excellent- Carlton and Adelaide. Pretty sure he left with 10 coaches votes against the crows and his defensive work on Cripps was excellent

Bailey Smith once was in the car as a youngster when his parents drove through Grovedale and Waurn Ponds on a family trip.

The mystical calling of Grovedale has been in his thoughts ever since, and he's only just cottoned on that's where he needs to be.

(If only they'd driven through Norlane/Princes Hwy instead, we'd already have him signed up on a 6yr contract.)

Surely someone‘s selling essence of terror on e-bay somewhere gj ?
See if you can track some down and I will drop some in his Corn flakes 😜

Bailey Smith played inside midfield at the beginning of the year and was a liability. Amazed if he is crying now
