We always seem to hold onto players for way too long even if it’s a high likelihood they want out. I understand why we held onto Dunkley, both the principle of it and because that was a really poor draft, but we should’ve entertained the Smith deal last year. Same with English.

Now we have two problems: one isn’t going to get us anywhere near the value we want and the other we just signed on for five years despite them being a major problem on field.

Hindsight is a waste of time peeps.
No club is trading Bailey Smith or any of their good players based on the reasoning of you “might get more now than you would down the track”.

Rejecting the hawks trade (if it was real) to then only offer 2 years I just can’t comprehend.
My understanding of why the Dogs only offered two years was because that would take Bailey through to Free Agency with us and that was the maximum length of contract that he would sign.
He was then certain to leave
Have I got that wrong

Maybe - I don’t know….

But if that’s the case, then we still misread the situation last trade period

I am sure the AFL will look into this with their feather duster

Cotton On and Cats will make sure this gets done with minimal impact on their salary cap
Look, I know zero about Smith. I have no idea if he's any good. I've heard he had a good year once.

But, he already works with cotton on.
Secondly, the salary club increases by $2 mil in 2025. Anyone could fit him in.

The cats will lose Hawkins, 2E, Parfitt, Stanley, Bews etc.
Cash isn't the problem here.

Draft picks are because we dont have any 'hand' unless one of our players asks to get out for more opportunity elsewhere.
But again, I have no idea what he's worth.

IF he's told Geelong he's coming you can bet that Geelong will have that deal done on day 1. It's how they roll.

im sick of this narrative that the selling club needs to get reamed if the player is uncontracted

unless the player walks via the draft to the club of choice then the seller has the most hand.
you call the bluff and be prepared to get nothing. worst case youve set a precedent for other clubs trying to low ball you in the future. the buyer is obliged to pay to do the right thing for the player. the player is no longer the sellers concern and unless the seller has refused a fair offer, then there's no reputational damage either.

in this game of chicken you dont swerve first

I’m 100 committed to sending Smith to the PSD. If we are forced to stick to these shit rules then so are the players and agents. If we don’t get a fair deal Connors can take any issues up with Geelong. Why the club being sharfted keeps being accused of being unreasonable is just beyond me. If you want to go after a player and commit to the agent and player you will get it done - pay that players value or move on. We should have shut down the Dunkley trade the same way.

Sadly despite their respective careers to date, and regardless of how much Smith is about to be paid whilst being 2 years younger, we'll likely end up with significantly worse compensation for him than St Kilda will get for Josh Battle. :drunk:

Just returning from my self imposed ban for one thing and one thing only.

In light of the Smith news. The vitriol towards Jamarra Ugle-Hagan is nothing short of despicable from a group of so-called "supporters".

He is a 22 year old key forward. One who generated as many shots at goal this year than the Coleman winner who played more games is the main forward and is smack bang in his prime.

Jamarra is far from a finished product and has quite a bit of improvement in him but his numbers for his age are spectacular.

He's also humble, hard-working and a genuine leader. He's also a cultural leader see him embracing his role with young indigenous players and the St Kilda racism incident as examples. He turned down some massive offers to stay loyal to the club for less money.

Those advocating a trade or reading into his body language can go **** themselves.

Now back to my sporadic lurking.

Hoping for a day one deal, but I suspect it’ll drag on for the whole week because Cats won’t want to pay his worth.

Judging from the dogs email to fans, we’re going to do everything in our power to not be f***ed over.

Bevo getting cute and starting him on the pine against the Hawks was also a massive dud of a move.
