One option the Bulldogs could have taken in regards to Sanders is not taken Croft.
You're never going to pass up a F/S player with the draft discount you get though. You can rate a player far less on your own draft board than the bid they were taken with and it's still the smart move to match the bid with the 20% discount and the over-valuing of later picks.

I think bean counting over picks isnt worth it - the only important thing is picking the good players.

Its like the Lobb trade - it was either going to be a great trade or a crap one, depending entirely on how useful Lobb turned out to be.

Same with Sanders - if he fails, its a horrible waste of draft currency, but if he stars, it was genius to trade up to get our hands on him.
On the small sample, it’s been a failure. Good player and potential but at this stage not worth the capital outlaid.

We just don't know enough about Sanders, Croft, or the two drafts to make a call yet. It's clear from the club's comments in the pre-season that we ended up paying a higher price than we thought we would be (by performing below expectations this season), but other than that, all we can say is that the trade has not been an immediate success.

It's not about whether or not players will become good, but whether the valuation placed on assets and the execution of them is sound. What is the value of picks in the early teens in a future year worth, when contrasted to the fact that we would know we would get Sanders at the time (without making any predictions about Sanders' output, if we were to just assume the position he was and his draft output).

For instance, Essendon traded pick 31 so they could move up from pick 11 to pick 10. They did this so they could draft Nate Caddy, but even if Nate Caddy turns out to be a star, doesn't mean that this should be the main reason why this is rated a good or bad trade (it's bad), for a multitude of reasons, including the fact that Caddy may have been there at pick 11 anyway.

In the NFL where these sort of picks-for-picks trades are incredibly common, there's been a heap of analysis of whether they're good (they're usually not): https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id...draft-lessons-deals-2024-class-winners-losers

Yeah agreed. Need a bit of a win.

Also, I love this time of year when the likes of Geelong and others want a starting 22 player, a player that went top 10 in the draft who has proven himself in finals, a player with speed who will be a key cog in the midfield, but don't want to give anything up.

Of course we should be asking about their players? We should be in there ears trying to convince them to come over. Geelong does that, so return the favour.

So De Koning for Smith is not outrageous. More of it.
Apparently it's ok to screw clubs over if you can get the player to nominate your club. We're told you win some you lose some. So, let's start returning the favour and going after other clubs players well ahead of trade week. In the case of the smith trade, I don't think we'd get De Koning but someone like Sam Mannagh might be gettbale and immediately fills a need.

The Western Bulldogs confirmed two changes to their AFL playing list on Monday.

Dominic Bedendo and Kelsey Rypstra have been informed that they will not be offered contracts for the 2025 season.

Bedendo, 22, was selected with pick No.55 in the 2020 AFL Draft and played two senior games in 2022.

Rypstra, 20, was recruited from North Adelaide in this year’s Mid-Season Rookie Draft and had yet to play a senior game after suffering a hamstring injury in the VFL.

General Manager of List and Recruiting Sam Power thanked both players for their contributions.

"Dom has made a significantly positive impact in his time at the Club and represented the Bulldogs with distinction at the highest level,” Power said.

“Unfortunately Kelsey was unable to build continuity due to injury but we appreciate all of his efforts in his short time with us.

"We wish both players all the best for the future and they will always be welcome at Mission Whitten Oval."

Think it’s the right call. Thought Bedendo had some real promise as a potential winger going into 2023 but then got injured and never got back going after that. Obvious delisting in the end. Unfortunate for Rypstra but that can be the life of a mid season draftee, sort of have to hit the ground running and he didn’t really get to do that.

Surprised Keath wasn’t one of them. I can see Johannisen being a wait until after the trade period to see whether we give him another year or not, Keath seems done and we’ve got plenty of key defenders. Maybe they are letting him announce it on his own terms but can’t see the reason he’d get another deal.
