I remember Alex Keath saying the same thing before having a steep nosedive
Athleticism is very definitely age based and everyone's cliff is different. For me a hopeless specimen athletically went from slow to glacier slow at around age 32. The explosiveness begins to evaporate and there is no getting it back.

Could see maybe another 2 maybe 3 good years left in Lobb but I feel like 4 is just a bit fanciful

This is what gets missed when people say ‘useless around the ground’

It’s exactly what a ruck needs to do. Not dick around racking up outside touches
The Port board is criticising him right now for the fact that he has 4 effective and 5 ineffective touches, and 0 uncontested.

Meanwhile Sydney have kicked goals directly as a result of Grundy contributing in transition ball movement chains, including Grundy himself hitting targets by foot

The sweet love affair is going too far. Very good, strong tap ruckman, definitely. Really does not provide much else, at all. Even at Port this year, after the pre-season battle he lost out to Soldo as the #1 ruck, with the coaches valuing what Ivan provided more. Credit to him, took it over and held onto it when Soldo got injured and went in for knee surgery.

This finals series in 3 games he has take ONE mark. ONE. And they have kicked to him down the line plenty of times to maybe clunk a few more. I bet Port would have loved him to present a little more around the ground to take a few more marks and hand off to runners coming past, but only the 1 mark in 3 full games. He also went at 57%, 53% and 54% by foot in these three finals. A lot of throw it on the boot, high up and unders to nobody that got turned over.

Tim didn't have a great year and everyone is down on him, but he was really solid in 2023, maybe didn't deserve All Australian, but Sweet is never having a year as good as that. English is still a very valuable ruck that does a lot of good things around the ground and opens the play up for us a ton with his hard running and skill. Poor tap ruck who needs to improve in this aspect and get stronger (never going to be a bruiser or great tap ruck in all likelihood), but Jordon Sweet is not as good as people make him out to be after every Port game...

Port fans are openly criticising his lack of contribution in winning the ball and like you say the majority of his ball use hacking the ball forward openly on their board.

Meek outplayed him last week too at the very least no less than how he outplayed English the week before.

Meek outplayed him? That's an insane statement

The coaches gave Sweet 5 votes, they had the same amount of touches, Sweet with 6 more score involvements, 4 more tackles, 11 more pressure acts, less turnovers etc

I can tolerate you defending English until your last breath, but lying about the performance of other ruckman is another thing.

Now you are been ridiculous

We know where you stand reg Sweet but don’t be silly about it

Meek vs English and Meek vd Sweet were miles apart

It's obviously a component, but it varies for every person, and if you don't have any major injuries and are disciplined with fitness, some can have a minimal drop off to age 35 or so compared to 30. As an AFL example, someone like Zorko who is nearly 36. Many retirements in their early 30s are driven by an accumulation of major injuries, in such a physically demanding sport, rather than raw athletic drop off.

English has far more strengths as a player, no doubt, and agree Sweet isn’t some world beater. My point is that Tim’s strengths don’t align with the role he plays, where as Sweet’s do. Genuinely think we would get similar if not better results in terms of overall team performance if Sweet (or a similar type player) lead our rucks this year, and we’d save probably $500k as well

Neither Sweet or English compare to Peter Street so they have some work to do

C’mon man. English had his pants pulled down by Meek and Sweet won that match up last week.
