Yes he would. However, though we have put a significant offer to him, as we have to others in the past, there are many reasons why these deals do not come to fruition that the club does not have control over.

Until a deal is done, there is nothing really to get excited about other than confirmation the club is not run by dummies as some on this board appear to beleive

I'd say it's 99% he still gets to Geelong, but even if one or 2 other clubs have a late crack, it at least forces Geelong to work harder to satisfy us quicker.

Made this point a few times but keep in mind that Smith would get band 1 compensation if he was a free agent (pick 13 after the pick 12 we traded to GC).

Geelong are offering that less in a trade.

Players are only eligible for free agency after 8 years. That's been decided after working with the AFLPA (part of the CBA), the clubs, the AFL themselves running a fair comp, to balance all interests of competitive balance, but individual freedom not to be tied to a club, the draft having some meaning of being able to keep good players you draft for a majority of your career etc.

Geelong are just pissing that all down the drain in terms of fairness and how these structures are balanced against each other.

If it makes more sense that you'd rather work against your own club's interest to allow free agency to come earlier in a player's career (6 years, not 8, in the case of Smith) because you'd get a better draft pick than what's being offered in a trade, sorry, the trade offer is not enough.

In theory, why shouldn't we just walk to the AFL, just say to them "should we treat Bailey Smith

Cotton On shenanigans aside, you can see why we're so pissed off at the structures the way it does, because ultimately it boils down to a big club in Geelong bullying us. It might be more honest to bring forward free agency of out-of-contract players form 8 to 6 or 4 years or whatever, it may not provide any meaning to drafting a good player, but at least the whole system would be more transparent and clubs would operate more honestly with each other if that was the case.

Stepping back a bit philosophically, it's all because Smith had no patience and a massive ego, and didn't want to accept that maybe, in fairness, the systems and the competition are bigger than him, and he should wait until he's a free agent.

You have demonstrated the stark reality of a flawed system.
Currently it relies on the goodwill of all clubs to work out a fair deal.

I won’t condemn Geelong at this point, I expect something will be worked out.
