Re: Atkinson Delisting

Hi Bombers...

I am a massive Cats fan but live 3 mins from Windy Hill so spend a lot of time watching and following the bombers as well. (really a massive footy fan to be honet) Heard something interesting on SEN the other day. They were talking about (Scotty Lucas i think) that even though a lot of people might not think Atkinson and Dempsey and a couple of others are within the best 22 players on te list, the "combination/chemistry" of having them in the team together has seen you guys play better footy than after you brought a bunch of players back in recently. I have to agree, having watced the Bombers ALOT. I am a little staggered reading some of the hate for Atkinson on this board. He provides pace and x factor for you guys. I think his finishing has been really good this year as well. As has his decision making (struggled a little on the weekend but generally been good.) I just reckon the Bombers have looked most dangerous this year when they have been quick and exciting and I'd be looking for a way to fit Dempsey, Atkinson, Davey and Jetta into the same side. And hey, if you're hell bent on delisting him, I'd LOVE to see him in a Cats side with mature hard players around him. He'd grow an extra leg i reckon and be a VERY good player...

Re: Atkinson Delisting

Skeeta dont know if I completely agree with you there.

Dempsey imo is better on the wing, this player seems to be the only player that produces some momentum and damage running forward when the game seems losts. Hes not a bad kick ether and will continually improve. However watching Dempsey, sometimes hes unaccountable and does not have the body strength to take on the bigger bodied small forwards.

Atkinson is better suited to a back pocket role imo as he is obviously a mature age recruit with a bigger body mass index and more natural strength than dempsey. He provides a lot of run off the backline, it gets the bombers going and it suits our game plan better than Henry Slattery. Atkinson has very good disposal from what I've seen too, he has regularly hit targets when I've watched him and made good decisions with the football.

In regards to Henry Slattery if he played football in the 80s he would have been a star. One of the most courageous bombers on our list but other than that he has nothing else to offer. To bad the game has become so fast with skills dominating who the winner or the loser is. We cant have a slow, plodder, lacking talent, boosts average disposals and cant hold a decent forward down on our list.

So im summary, Atkinson is in our best 22 and Henry Slattery is not.

List Changes

Henry Slattery - gone
Ricky Dyson - gone
Bachar Houli - gone

All 3 can be traded, Houli might attract something moreso than the other two. But the most amusing thing about all of this is two mentioned are Knights favourites and the worst on the list. Houli has the potential to be a player yet knights never plays him.

Lonergan is another player than I do not know if i like or dislike. He seems to be good at winning 1 on 1 contests, is hard at the ball but not overly talented. But not every player in the team can be a darren bewick.. you have to have the occasional servicable player but essendon has to many.

Melkshams a star.

I think both are nicely suited to the wing, but there is only room for one of them on the wing. The thing with Dempsey is that he can play that HBF role really well, and just needs to learn when to go and when to not.

Atkinson is better suited to a back pocket role imo as he is obviously a mature age recruit with a bigger body mass index and more natural strength than dempsey. Not a fan of Atkinson playing deep as a back pocket, Slattery is much better. One major weakness is that Atkinson isn't good overhead and can really get exposed. I would much rather seeing him running up the wing, or at worst from a HBF. I would have to say, this year Atkinson has improved quiet a bit from the person we saw against Adelaide last year. His disposal has improved immensely from last year.

In regards to Henry Slattery if he played football in the 80s he would have been a star. One of the most courageous bombers on our list but other than that he has nothing else to offer. Slattery is valuable to our team, that's all I'll say.

Wow, somebody else sees it too. :thumbsu:

Glad I'm not the only one.

People severely underestimate what Dempsey does week in week out. He makes a couple of mistakes and they all focus on those. But the good far outweighs the average when it comes to Dempsey (he regularly does some fantastic things across HALF BACK), and he's only going to keep improving.

Atkinson has not even played 20 games yet, but as I've said a couple of times on this board, he's given us more in those 20 games than Dyson did in his first 5 years. Slattery in his first 2 or 3 years too for that matter. Parts of his defensive game could improve obviously, but even then, he's still offered us more in less than 20 games that quite a few other players on our list ever did.

Yet, people aren't prepared to persevere with Atkinson for some reason.

But as you mentioned, when both are in the side and playing in the backline or halfback together, we instantly look more dangerous... the creative run generated by those two coming out of halfback which is what sets us up going forward. Yet now people want to move them onto the wing!? :p

Anyway, good post... like I said, I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees it. :thumbsu:

Re: Stanton is gone

Stanton still is a worry for me. He struggles with intense mental pressure i believe. He's fine when out on his own receiving the ball with no pressure- he has the skills to make something happen.

But Bateman harassed him all night and won some very tight contests against him in moments when we really needed Stanton to win the footy and drive us forward. It's not enough for me.

And we can't say anymore ""Yer but he's only young etc..etc""

You either have it or you don't.

I look at a 19 year old Dustin Martin and his ability to fend off opponents heavier than himself, the way he always keeps his feet and just his pace and movement around packs to receive and win the ball...where Stanton gets tackled way to easy and gets thrown around like a rag doll and just doesn't add a great deal of 'hardness' to our MF group.

I'd like to see him play at halfback with not so much pressure building inside his head every match. But everyone seems to think he's a superstar wingman...

+ 1

I think Atkinson provides something down back that no defender on our list (bar Dempsey) can, which is the pace to keep up with the lightning quick small forwards.

If not in our best 22, he is still a handy player to call upon when the time arises (for example playing the Cats with Stokes, Varcoe, Burns or the Blues with Betts, Yarran, Garlett).

Dempsey's BMI is actually higher than Atkinsons. (Although they are both very close).

Re: Dons, Tigers armed for raid

Every year we hear the same thing yet I'm yet to see as recruit any big names. Not exactly the best year to go after players with GC17 and GWS coming in. We will have to do it through trade because any decent players in the PSD will go to those clubs. Can't see it happening myself.

Trade/Delistings/List Management 2011 Thread

In light of a few threads that have been started in recent weeks, I feel it is time to bring on the annual thread deiscussing all things List Management.

If a new thread is started, it shall be moved in here quick smart to avoid clogging up the main board with useless threads that will diminish as quickly as they appear.

Thanks guys
