AFLW Trade, Draft and list changes

pick 13 still a chance at a decent mid

I'd like to see us draft a pure mid, the problem at girls U18 level is the midfields are often topped up with hybrids and utilities and there is usually only 1 or 2 pure mids per team so it's harder to evaluate and predict how hybrids and utilities will go at AFLW level. A lot end up on a wing or a flank, and they're not like Shai Bolton who could play anywhere and do it as good as specialists.

E.g our pick 16 in 2021 we drafted Millzy Yassir, as a FWD/MID and she played for the Cannons in the midfield alongside Georgie Prespakis and Zali Friswell. She's turned out really good for us as she's got a lot of forward craft, but she's not a pure mid, and undersized for a mid.

I don't know who may likely be there for us at 13 as a pure mid but it should help that they are likely still available for us at 13 as 70% of all nominees have nominated as national so it should fatten it out for us

Now that Trade week is done and dusted clubs may need to cut deeper into their lists to get their lists down to 28, with the minimum of 2 picks rule to apply at this Monday's draft.

I believe that we will have to cut 4 more players.

Alotve those girls would’ve been identified as a talent because they can win at league level, win ball, get votes etc but then they get to rep footy and they haven’t had to play against alotve oppo that are as good as them.
Rep footy coaches still want to win games and only have em for half a dozen games a season or thereabouts.
It’s tricky because if they play more Rep footy than domestic league in the same year they’re not eligible for finals in the domestic comp with the local clubs.
Clubs have a cap of four players per age group that can play in one Rep footy side.
And U/16 they all play the same way wherever they are in the ground really unless they’re unusually tall and play the ball in the air.
They all try and play like mids and to be fair the amount of stoppages at local level there’s not alotve possesion chains.

Why do you think that is CD? Is it the level of coaching? or level of skill? or something else? I'm a netball coach not a footy coach and been lucky enough to have the resources inc. good specialist coaches to start girls from mid teens on acceleration programs including tactically. I find girls peripheral vision develops around early teens but not a problem from U14 on.

The Club has advised Sarah D’Arcy, Meg Macdonald and Lilly Pearce that they will not be offered contracts for the 2024 season.

We thank the girls for their time at Tigerland and wish them all the best for the future 💛

i think i know what's going on.

Shelby Knoll (ACL) will be put on the LTI list.

so, we have our 2 minimum for the draft.

I think it’s the numbers.
2-3 coaches (mostly dads who haven’t done alotve coaching) with 25 kids.
i think it’s the hardest game to get good at by yourself or with one other and it’s the biggest playing area.
BBall, netball goes all year round but footy if you don’t play finals it’s 14 games plus maybe a practice match at the start of the year.
You only have 2x 1 hr maybe an 1.5 hrs a week with them as juniors training at night( which isn’t as good) squished up in a section of the ground because there’s three or more other teams using the ground for training because of junior numbers and even if they have a rotation policy for players at junior level, coaches still use players to win games because everyone wants to play finals.

Not alot has changed since the 80’s for Aussie Rules training and there has been a bit of a shakeup at Talent Pathway with more money getting tipped in for scouting and training programs from Rookie me and at that level they are getting better at talking to clubs but still some clubs have better reputations than others.
They still they use Umpire votes to help identify talent and Umpires give votes to goal scorers or possesion winners.
Alotve the time it’s one Umpire at juniors and there usually Teenagers as well.

There’s all that and it’s about the kid too you have to be pretty special to have the dedication to get to the highest level.
Less than 1% of high school kids become professional athletes, something like that.

The AFL and the pathway chews up and spits out alotve kids, 1000’s every year.

Thanks for that insight CD, a lot of hurdles to navigate there, things can always be better run, have more support from top down, sponsors partnering programs etc, ultimately in kids sport it's down to what time and resources are being chucked in as to what the the level of the playing field is for them to get the best opportunities.

Snooze you lose!

Not a massive surprise, but always sad to see the girls who have given all they have got, just miss out. Replacements in the seasons coming will see this repeated.

RICHMOND failed to back up its top four appearance from Season 7 in Season 8, missing out on finals this year.

The Tigers star midfielder Monique Conti won the AFLW League Best and Fairest after a sensational season and some near-misses in past years, but ultimately the Tigers did not achieve the same heights of the year before.

They managed to bring in some readymade talent over Trade Period and dropped back down the draft order in the process.

OFF-SEASON CHANGES
In: Jodie Hicks, Ally Dallaway, Montana McKinnon, Pick 13, Pick 43
Out: Meagan Kiely (retired), Jess Hosking, Stephanie Williams, Sarah D’Arcy, Lilly Baker, Meg Macdonald (delisted), Pick 9, Pick 30, Pick 69

Draft Selections: 13, 43, 49
Richmond had a surprising delisting in Jess Hosking who had her fair share of injury concerns but has since been picked up by West Coast, with Sarah D’Arcy and Meg Macdonald also among the departures, as Meagan Kiely retired.

The Tigers did recruit a couple of Giants in Ally Dallaway and Jodie Hicks, while being able to offer Crow Montana McKinnon a more permanent role.

They traded back to Pick 13 after initially having nine, as well as lost Pick 30, but dragged up their third selection 20 spots to be all done inside the top 50.

FIRST PICK
Richmond enters the draft at a fascinating stage, just outside the top group, but ahead of the next lot which suggests the Tigers were happy to reach on a player.

It could mean they opt for an athletic type like Isabel Bacon or Emily Gough who have been rising up draft boards throughout the year.
Both are outstanding runners and add physicality to the lineup.

If the likes of Ella Slocombe or Mikayla Williamson happened to be there, they would be too good to refuse, though it shows the Tigers have plenty of potential scenarios at their footsteps.

If the Jemma Rigoni is yet to come, do not rule it out at this pick, though Melbourne will swiftly match with Pick 23.

More readymade options include midfielders Chloe Adams and Kayley Kavanagh, while tall forward Georgia Clark would fit a need up forward.

All up, the Tigers are difficult to predict given the amount of possible scenarios ahead of them.

REMAINING DRAFT CROP
The Tigers’ remaining two picks both come in the 40s which means they will have to wait a while and see a lot of names come off the board.

Richmond might look out west for some readymade talent and one of Jaime Henry or Anjelique Raison, especially if they pick up Ella Slocombe with the first pick.

From a Stingrays perspective, bookends, Jemma Ramsdale and Sophie Butterworth are others who might be targets at either end, with Ramsdale being that natural leader and rebounding force, while Butterworth would be a key position target.

Richmond is also no stranger to selecting mature-age talent, and could head to the VFLW to look at Jessica Bates or Akayla Peterson who have been outstanding in their respective roles this season.

The Tigers might even be the ones to force St Kilda to take Charlotte Simpson with a bid.

SUMMARY
Richmond is a difficult team to predict due to the unknowns with where the Tigers’ picks lay.

The top 12 could go a number of ways which would change the scope of the Tigers’ pick, and then later on Richmond would be able to either grab a slider or set its sights on mature-age selections.

not much about who we take from Sarah Black.

top 10 likely to be:

Kristie-Lee Weston-Turner
Brooke Barwick
Kaitlyn Srhoj
Alyssia Pisano
Mikayla Williamson
Jess Rentsch
Ella Slocombe
Elaine Grigg
Cleo Buttifant
Evie Long

for our 1st pick, I'm liking in no particular order:

Isabel Bacon

Kayley Kavanagh

Chloe Adams

all midfielders, with Bacon being athletic and quick, Adams and Kavanagh more inside ball winners.

but at pick 13 it's unknown who might slide, or who we might reach for.

for our final pick, I'm liking:

Emily Gough

With a group of 8-9 quality mids, a couple of which are father daughters, you'd say one of Adams & Kavanagh would be there at pick 13. It will be interesting to see where the bids do come in. Would Clark, listed as a tall forward be a possible slider with her height? As a forward she's about the same height as some of the mids in the draft at 172cm, so not overly tall but may be more a Bonnie Toogood type.

definitely Adams and Kavanagh will be there, unless something crazy happens.
if Ella Slocombe (M.Conti type) was a slider to our pick, we'd seriously/probably look to take her.
the bids on F/D I'd say take place after the top 10 picks.
the 1st bid would be Evie Long (Lions academy), highly rated, will be matched by Lions pick 20.

yeah Clarke is an interesting one to place (more Katie Brennan 174cm, than Toogood 178cm)
A strong-bodied key forward, who at 173cm would play as a second or third tall at AFLW level.
Saints interested, but yeah could slide.
is the best mark of the draftees, but not athletic, more a lead up type fwd, which is the only concern about her.
i doubt we'd take her over a mid-type player.

have heard a few whispers regarding the top 10 picks, but only 2 or so girls will slide, the rest are locked in apparently.
hardest draft ever to predict apparently, so will be exciting to see how it unfolds.
