The AFL bangs on about integrity constantly but what happened in this draft is WWE stuff.

For Carlton to give up a second rounder to get 3 late picks is nonsense and screams manipulation of sorts. Nothing will come of it but needs a thorough investigation.

The St Kilda deal needs looking at also. According to most scouts one of the best and deepest drafts yet they give up Pick 10 to check mate GC and help Hawthorn out.

The fact that Omeara wasn't even talking to us in the last week means we were never anywhere near consideration at any point in any time. Just a sideshow. Was pretty obvious all the way through.

What are you insinuating?

You seriously think St Kilda got the short end of the stick on that one?

That deal was ridiculously weighted towards the Saints. The only ones they were helping were themselves.

So who's our best option in the PSD? I like Richards. Having him, Stewart, TBC and Brown compete for the one spot is what we need. Key forward depth is something Essendon haven't had for years..

Any other options?

Personally I expected a bit more to happen.

- Not sure why we didn't get Melbourne's future 2nd and dangled that in front of the expansion clubs with 41 to get a better pick this year
- I thought there were big opportunities to try and get a strong hand in the top end of this draft having 1 and 20
- one other GWS kid like Pickett could have addressed our small forward needs

Easy to say it I guess when you are not in that position making the call. But we really needed to make some moves.

Agree. Think the club lost the ball in thinking they were a shot with Omeara.

Blind freddy could see we stood no chance and our hopes for PSD were laughable.

We should have been lining someone up in the PSD for the last 6 months - same way Hawks lined up Mitchell and Omeara. If we are scrambling now, then we are a bunch of amateurs.

They may be uncontracted, but if an offer's on the table they haven't been delisted.
Don't clubs have to the end of the month to either re-sign them or delist them?
Then there is the DFA trade period beforehand or am I getting it wrong?

Players only become DFAs if actively delisted (as in, a club refuses to offer them a contract). If the player refuses to sign an offered contract, then unless they qualify as an RFA or UFA through 8+ years of service, their only other option is to enter the draft.

Why would a team delist an elite player then?
Has Barlow been delisted?

when you look at the draft now, it's a tough prediction on who takes who.
There are a lot of Non vic picks in the top 20 and I imagine some nervous clubs wondering about go home factors

If we take McGrath at 1, what are the next 9 picks in your view?
My Top 10 as of now is
1. Essendon - Hugh McCluggage
2. GWS - Andrew McGrath
Bid
3. Gold Coast - Jack Bowes
4. Brisbane - Ben Ainsworth
Bid
5. GWS - Will Setterfield
6. Carlton - Will Brodie
7. Gold Coast - Tim Taranto
8. Fremantle - Sam Petrevski- Seton
9. Gold Coast - Jack Scrimshaw
Bid
10. GWS - Harry Perryman

I also have 63 players being drafted and at the moment for us its
1. Hugh McCluggage
20. Josh Battle
29. Dylan Clarke
41. Corey Lyons
68. Nick Larkey

Who do you suggest? Youth isn't a substitute for skill.

Free 29 year old elite inside mid isn't a bad option surely.
Wouldn't say he's elite anymore and he's never been all that skillful just a hard working inside bull, hasn't really been the same since his broken leg. Not whether it was Lyon playing him out of position this year but he looked very slow. We've already got enough issues with speed in the midfield as it is.

For mine given the lack of quality tall forwards and ruckmen in this draft my first prefence would be to take Harry Dear, has done some very nice things in the SANFL so far but would be unlikely to get a crack in their forwardline or in the ruck. Second preference would be Xavier Richards, showed a lot as a forward in the latter half of the NEAFL and AFL seasons.

Think that's the case yes, pretty sure anyone who isn't signed as of November 1st is fair game and counts as a DFA.

Given the deal that was made, it's safe to assume 3 and 16 is what was on offer. Perhaps the club rates the capacity to take a McCluggage or McGrath over a four-pick upgrade.

The expansion clubs are now limited in how many picks they can use for points, and besides, already have plenty of both.

For anyone who wanted to know, here are the remaining key off-season dates:
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1 TO TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8 — NAB AFL delisted free agency period (1)

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10 TO THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 18 — NAB AFL delisted free agency period (2)

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26 TO SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 27 — NAB AFL delisted free agency period (3)

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 25 — NAB AFL National Draft

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28 — NAB AFL Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30 2PM — Final AFL club list lodgement

with delisted free agency, what is the point of the PSD?
A place for uncontracted players to go who wish to leave a club who wants to keep them? I'm glad, I'd prefer PSD the only option for these types (no ND). I think guys like Ball at pick 30 put a dampener on the draft. Imagine having Fyfe or Cameron being taken at pick 1 of a ND. I'd hate it. Top 40 odd should be kids. Leave old folks to PSD.

Changed to McLugg for for #1

It isn't, or O'Meara would have just killed time until November 1st and signed as a DFA.

with delisted free agency, what is the point of the PSD?
For all those players who don't qualify as DFAs. Of course, the national draft serves that purpose just fine.

For a guy like Richards who technically isn't a RFA as he has apparently been offered a contract, would Swans be likely to be friendly and delist him to allow him to allow him to select his own side to go to or would they be more likely to say: 'this is the deal, take it or go to the PSD.'?
