We need to using players in trades rather than picks.
I agree we need to go to the draft with our picks otherwise why do we need recruiters. Every time we trade for a player we pay overs and therefore need to nail our later picks to improve our list. This is something we have not been fantastic at in recent times.

We used to own trade periods but last couple of years have reeked of desperation.
No wonder plenty on here are now suggesting some ludicrous and unfavourable to us scenarios.
Lever is worth our first rounder and not much more.
Smith isn't a necessity and is worth an equivalent of second rounder.

I wasn't a big fan but credit to him he's played well and got promoted. I'm more in the camp of he's serviceable. Doesn't really stand out in any fashion but he can do a job. Will probably play out the rest of the year in the 1's and be retained for another year and we'll see how he goes from there.

Thomas has the best hands inside congestion of any player at the club, still only played 37 games in total and only 5 back from a 2 year absence. I think there is still lots of development in this kid.

Fair assessment.

He's top 5 possession games at afl level are: 35 , 29 , 29 , 28 , 27. If he can recapture that we will have a gem.
Best 4 games listed on Footywire as:

29 disps (15 kicks 14 hballs), 4 marks, 8 tackles and 3 goals in Rd 22 8-pt win over GWS at Spotless Stadium (23 Aug 2014)
29 disps (18 kicks 11 hballs), 7 marks, 5 tackles and 3 goals in Rd 11 86-pt win over St Kilda at Etihad Stadium (30 May 2014)
35 disps (19 kicks 16 hballs), 8 marks and a goal in Rd 22 62-pt win over West Coast at the MCG (23 Aug 2013)
27 disps (15 kicks 12 hballs), 7 marks and 2 goals in Rd 11 83-pt win over Melbourne at the MCG (10 Jun 2013)

He regularly hits the scoreboard which is also handy.

Sorry if it's been discussed already, but has Smith not signed a contract? I remember a few months ago there was a rumour about him wanting to come home and us and Geelong being interested.

He said at the time he was homesick but wanted to stick it out with GWS I think.

If he hasn't signed up after making a public statement like that it would suggest to me that his people have been talking to Vic clubs. Might be some fire to go with that smoke.

Agree, we've got more than enough small forwards.

Why are we looking at Smtih from GWS? They'll want something between late first-early second for him and he doesn't fill a need. Elliot, Fasolo, Crocker, Daicos, Kirby, even Josh Thomas could fill a similar role. Ripping player for sure but surely we have more pressing needs. Besides small forwards can be found anywhere, Fantasia was a later pick, Betts was in the pre-season draft. (There's also two bloke scalled Adam Sambono and Liam Ryan who will be on the draft boards late and have huge talent if we really need to grab another small forward).

IMO I would go really hard after T. Duryea, combative and experienced small defender who would slot into our backline and improve it for sure. Thought he'd signed earlier but thrilled he could still be an option, would bring that 'winning' mindset and culture to the club as well. Want Lever but not at the expense of Shaz. Pick 6 and Aish really should be enough, even to possibly ask for the third rounder in return to, to get him to the club. Mentioned him earlier but also offering up pick 36 for Leslie would also be worth it, 22yo 197cm full back who can lock down a key defender and be a replacement to to Dunn and play alongside McLarty and Lever for the next decade. next years second rounder for Hopper seems a good deal for me.

Basically breaks down as;
Pick 6, Aish for Lever (maybe pick third rounder)
Pick 36 for Jack Leslie
Future Second rounder for Hopper
Taylor Duryea free agent.

2018 Line Up;
Duryea Dunn Scharenberg
Maynard Lever Howe

Grundy Adams DeGoey
Sidebottom Pendlebury Treloar

WHE Moore Wells
Fasolo B. Reid Elliot

Leaves a number of quality players to choose for the bench but i'll choose;
Goldsack Hopper Crisp Varcoe/Greenwood (for pure tagging roles)

Sorry mate, but there is buckleys Hopper is being traded by GWS for a second round pick.

Plus he is the complete opposite of what we should be chasing either in the draft or trade period.

Smith played midfield in TAC and is above average by foot. Maybe they're looking at play him in the middle rather than half forward. If they can get him in a player swap he might be a good pick up.

They're buzzing about Devon Smith

SOME days after games last year, Devon Smith struggled to walk. What he did know was that his hip was sore most weekends and he needed a dip in an ice bath before bed to help his recovery.
What wasn't clear for some time was that the problem causing him serious discomfort was overgrown cartilage.

The onballer toughed out the season - drawing the attention of recruiters - before surgery was called to trim the bone.

While it may have delayed his start to this year, the injury hasn't stopped the Geelong Falcons midfield dynamo from becoming a possible top-10 pick in next week's national draft.

"There were ups and downs, but I couldn't really complain because I really wanted to play national championships this year and I was lucky enough to play that," Smith said.

"I didn't play at my best, but I was pretty happy with what I could have produced (considering) the pre-season (interruption)."

Smith, 18, has been affectionately coined "a bee in a bottle" by AFL talent guru Kevin Sheehan.

He is a fearless clearance machine who averaged 27 possessions a game in the TAC Cup, including 12 contested. What elevates the 175cm midfielder above other prolific ball-winners is his decision making and ball use.

Falcons development coach and welfare officer Damien McMahon said the teen wasn't one to slap the ball on the boot.

His ability to pick the best option by hand or foot, then speed away to lend support, or pose a threat forward, enhanced his stocks.

"He will hold on to the ball until he has the right option," McMahon said.

"He gets very angry with himself if he wastes a possession. If he does, you'll see him sprint 50m to the next contest to make amends."

Smith, from Lara, said his appetite for the hard ball was developed in the backyard.

"I grew up with two older brothers," he said. "We would always fight around, everything was contested, I just hate losing."

Falcons regional manager Michael Turner said attitude, professionalism, and attack on the ball made Smith the best small player to come through the club.

"Was Devon Smith as good as Jimmy Bartel at the same age? Yes he was," Turner said. "I rate him very highly ... small players like him have come back into vogue.

"If he goes to the right club he could probably play AFL footy next year."

In the second game of the national championships, Smith showcased his talents forward, kicking six goals from 27 possessions.

As the Falcons' season fizzled with losses to Oakleigh and Western Jets, Smith battled trying to stem the flow of goals.

"Recruiters look really closely when the side is being beaten and we were getting smashed in the last round this year by 20 goals and he still had the ball 28 times," Turner said.

"I think he had the most tackles for us and got absolutely smashed a few times and just dragged himself up off the ground and got going again."

McMahon said he was a ferocious competitor who had high expectations of his football.

"When he had the hip problem it was tough for Dev because you have all these things running through your mind," McMahon said.

"Could he come back and play football the way he knew he could play, and would he be able to play in the AIS games and for Vic Country?

"But despite all that he showed a lot of mental strength to focus entirely on doing everything right so he could come back and help the team.

"He's very driven and there were a lot of times when he was coming back from the injury that we had to hold him back in his running and things."

Tend to agree although they may be tempted to go for it considering the strength of the draft and if Hopper really pushes to come to us. Unlikely but it seems about time we had a bit of luck in regards to the trade and free agency period.

Don't know about complete opposite, he shouldn't be a priority that's for sure. Looking at my other proposals, if we can get Lever, Leslie as tall's and Duryea as a small defender, coupled with the fact that there really isn't any key forwards really available this year (or ones of note anyway) why not take an AFL ready young midfielder. Would allow us to use better ball users like Pendlebury or Sidebottom around the ground as we need. Kids a jet and if he comes without jeopardizing our ability to add Lever and another KPP I don't see why we shouldn't make an offer.

If we get Smith then it'll only make it harder for Kirby and Daicos to get opportunity next season as a small forward.

If we get Smith he'll probably push out Thomas and make it harder for Callum to break into the side who's more suited to a midfield role.

Smith kind of feels like a luxury when needs are greater in other areas.

I bloody love Sidey, and this feels wrong to speak of, but could he go to Adelaide to help Sloane, or Carlton if Gibbs goes to Crows? I'll love him till he finishes, even in a Carlton jumper

Or with Barlow's second broken leg, could he head north as part of a Lynch deal?

He could, but why the hell would he be willing to do that when he already has a long term contract and is vice captain of a club he loves?

The more I think about it the more I don't think selling the proverbial farm for Lever is a good idea. I have no doubt about his quality as a player but the concern for me is that the quality has been shown as an intercept defender rather than a key defender. You'd hate to get into a "square peg, round hole" situation by paying a premium for Lever only to find he doesn't have the same value as a key defender and we're left with too many medium/intercept types (given that Howe, Langdon and Scharenberg are already on the list). So, here might be an option. Use 2017 first round pick on Noah Balta (and again, I don't know too much about draftees but I did enjoy his highlights package) and pick up Sam Reid as a FA. End of 2018 season use our first round pick on a key forward. Ideally we can trade it for a gun long-term key forward (Patton please, or Lynch). If not, use it to draft a key forward. The benefits of picking up a Patton or Lynch are obvious but if not, a key forward pair of Moore and S.Reid while our 2018 first rounder develops isn't all that bad.

Think we have some ok short-term cover in the meantime already too. I think B.Reid has been around long enough to be able to play a key position role at either end of the ground. Dunn and Goldsack can cover key back positions in the short-term (as well as B.Reid) while McLarty and Balta develop. In terms of a medium-long term lineup, possibly this:

FB: Langdon, McLarty, Howe
HB: Scharenberg, Balta, Maynard

R: Grundy, Adams, De Goey
C: Sidebottom, Treloar, ???

HF: Elliott, Moore, ???
FF: Fasolo, Patton/Lynch/2018 first, S.Reid

Int: Crisp, WHE, Greenwood, ???

Obviously some assumptions need to be made (i.e. Moore and De Goey fulfilling potential etc) when forecasting but I don't think it looks too bad and certainly not outside the realms of possibility. Getting a gun key forward is probably the biggest step but as mentioned, S.Reid and Moore in the medium term isn't bad especially if Moore becomes the player we hope he will. Nail the next couple of trade/drafting periods and we can be set for KPP's for the long-term. As mentioned, all of Dunn, Goldsack and B.Reid can provide short-term cover while McLarty and Balta develop (and I haven't given up hope on Schade also). Similarly, B.Reid can also provide short-term cover as a key forward while S.Reid can be a medium-term option while Moore continues development + another key forward is targeted (and Cox will still be around and developing also). Probably lacking a small at either end of the ground and could use some outside class and speed also. In addition to the above we still have question marks over the following though:

Aish, Broomhead, Brown, Cox, Crocker, Daicos, Keeffe, Kirby, Phillips, Ramsay, Schade, Sier, Sinclair, Smith, Thomas, and Wills.

Plenty of players in that group yet to really take the next step (although McLarty, Balta, Langdon and Scharenberg probably belong there too) and may fill in the gaps although with the bookends taken care of and a solid midfield of Grundy, Treloar, Adams and De Goey to build around I think the other pieces of the puzzle shouldn't be as difficult to complete. And if it wasn't obvious already, looking beyond Pendlebury, Wells, Varcoe, B.Reid and the other older players here. Doesn't mean someone like Pendlebury can't play-on in the medium term in a lesser role, you'd hope the players listed would be able to shoulder more of the load though.

^^^^ LOL Everyone wants us to get Balta now if we keep our pick. I was on the bandwagon first just to let you all know.

Not even then.

Had he not been an academy selection its debatable whether he would have gone no 1. Not being a Kpp in a year that there was a couple of exciting prospects would have been the only reason.

At draft time champion data ranked him the best draft prospect in the land. In front of weitering, Scache, Mills etc. He has a couple of injury issues, however GWS aren't going to let him go for a second rounder. IMO he is worth a pick between 5-10.

1st rounder is enough for lever, and if we throw in a player as well a pick has to come back our way. Any thing else is to much
