Just guessing but I'd say you only go 4, 5 or more years if you're getting a bargain. If you're paying current market value, or more, you don't want to lock it in for longer than you have to. Especially if their contract is locked to the TPP.

Agree. It's locking these longer term big contracts to growth in TPP that is often overlooked and erodes their value to the club. As I understand it, Treloar's deal wasn't locked to TPP and he's now really good value given he hasn't taken any of the 20 odd percent TPP growth that has occurred since his arrival. Signing Grundy on something like $900k means he's really well paid but if that's locked to TPP even a small 3% annual rise in TPP means that compounds north of $1m by the 5th year of the deal whereas a flat $900k per year frees up a $100k in TPP toward the end of his contract. I'm sure these are the sort of discussion being had.

Thank's for explaining that, these are the things people don't understand when they say just give him what he wants

Really surprised to see that outside Cox & Reid, you guys don't really seem to have any other key forwards...has Hines not drafted a decent one for the last 5+ years?

Would think also that in giving up your first rounder this year, it would be almost impossible to lure a star key forward this off-season.

But what about these alternatives?
Casboult - Been in ripper form this year and can play forward or back, plus supporting ruck. UFA. Ready to go which is useful as you are contending.
Jenkins - Should get him fairly cheap, another who can play supporting ruck.
Day - Not sure if worth it but should be cheap.
Wright - Would be a great get, would take your 2020 1st and more i'm assuming.
Dixon - Maybe? Has been dropped from Ports team a few times this year.
Taberner - From VIC. Has the likes of Hogan/Lobb to contend with.

Brodie Mihocek has kicked more goals this year than any of McKay, Curnow, McGovern and Casboult but still isn't our leading goal kicker. Question is what has SOS been up to?

I am aware you have lots of forwards around 190cm who can mark it but i wouldn't classify any of Mihocek/De Goey/Stephenson/WHE as a key forward.

I'm talking about the bigger guys like Cox & Reid.

Mihocek is as wide as he is tall, an analogy for you would be John Nicholls playing ruck at 188cm, he was formidable because of size and weight though lacking height

F_therest what's the story with Patrick Kerr?

Well down in the pecking order behind McKay/Curnow/McGovern/Casboult...although even with 2 of those 4 missing he's still not getting a game, with us being content with medium sized marking forwards like Silvagni & Matt Kennedy.

OOC and i'm pretty sure will be moved on end of this year.

A player that would come free or close to it. May be worth Collingwood to pick up but as a long-term project...while also picking up a ready-to-go player like Jenkins since you're contending.

I'm not an avid VFL watcher, but knocks seem to be consistency and that he may be a little one-dimensional - a lead, mark, kick player. Good set shot for goal though.

Day has recommitted to the suns for 2 years.

Maybe they are thinking that Murphy or Kelly can develop into a key forward. Not to mention Wilson. Obviously don't have a ready made one.

You have a point...Charlie Curnow is listed as 192cm, but seems a lot bigger than that to me when I watch him play. Probably the wide shoulders and big leap.

Still, with Reid retiring and Cox a little patchy, i would have thought Collingwood would be in the market for a big key forward and presented some cheaper options.

I'm sure the forward line will look a lot better though now that WHE is back there and when Stephenson returns.

Kerr's out with a shoulder injury isn't he?

A weird one, i think he did injure his shoulder, hasn't featured at VFL level for a while but it's not being mentioned in our weekly injury report.

But i do know that we were missing a few tall forwards in some games before the shoulder and he still wasn't getting a game.

He is the same size as the great white hope Curnow. Except averages more goals. And marks. And is on the rookie list instead of being our second highest paid player.

Day, Taberner and wright all re signed, we should have taken Casboult last year

We do have Tohill and Wilson as developing key forwards along with Kelly and Keane as developing key defenders. I’d imagine we’ll probably look for a depth KPF in this years trade period, and Wilson may end up playing senior footy next year with a full preseason under his belt. He’s pretty much got an AFL ready body and his improvement in his short time in the VFL has been fairly rapid (donuts in his first game to 2 goals and 16 disposals in his 6th).

We must find a way past Cox next season.
If he’s still our main key forward then we haven’t improved.

Wilson coming along would be fantastic.

Or even if we changed up our structure and played with a whole bunch of dangerous mediums and smalls that consist of JDG, Elliott, WHE, Stephenson as they’re all capable marking players.
Sidebottom I’d love to spend more time rotating forward too as he just has a way of making things happen around the goals.

Mihocek obviously a lock too as an tall.

Would we be interested in Josh Jenkins or Brad Hill ?
Jenkins can spud it up but maybe a new start is what he needs
Hill would be a great get, is he a lock for somewhere else already, Hawks ?

Just look what we have done with Dunn,Howe and Roughead

Not having a 1st round draft pick hurts our trading this year but looking at bargin/ younger KPP -

Buzza (Fwd)- 199cm hasn't played this starved of opportunity at cats
J Brander (Fwd)- again not getting many opportunities at eagles
A Francis (Def)- 193cm behind Hooker, Hurley and Ambrose straight swap for Sier? id do it
P Kerr (Fwd) -197cm behind Curnow, McGoven, Mckay
J Walker (def)- 26yrs old could be good depth in KPD

Looks like we've got Wellsy's replacement ready to go

Injury-plagued speedster Harley Bennell will meet with a Melbourne-based club later this month as he eyes a miraculous AFL comeback.

Bennell, 26, will undergo a second bout of surgery on his troublesome calves in a fortnight after specialists identified what they believe is the mystery problem that has cruelled his 83-game career.

Geelong injury specialist Peter Stanton and his surgeons are adamant Bennell will be fully recovered and back in training by November.

The issue that went undetected during his time at Fremantle involves a tendon pushing onto a nerve in both of Bennell’s calves.

Bennell and his manager Colin Young will meet with officials from a Victorian club in three weeks to provide an update on his mental and physical wellbeing.

The 2010 No.2 draft pick is determined to revive his AFL career away from Perth after breaking down and being cut adrift by the Dockers in June.
Smells of StKilda to me
