It's only a minority because we've only had 1 years exposure to the SSP and midyear recruitment options. There'll be guys drafted who train at the clubs, there'll be guys drafted who don't. Obviously the SSP gives greater opportunity for clubs to have players train with them as it's the preseason and doesn't impact their season as much if they ultimately don't get drafted. It may well even be beneficial if you're wanting to test the attitude of a prospect (Stack) or the fitness of a prospect (Bennell), but it's hardly a deal breaker/maker.

We’ve got two years of data on the SSP and of the dozen or so guys taken the only one that I’m aware of that didn’t have permission to train with a club was Brooksby. As with Appleby and Bianco there will be outliers. In Collingwood’s case given we had the guy training with us we ultimately took it was a dealbreaker...

Quite the opposite I'd have thought.

You’ll need to explain the logic behind us selecting the guy training with us indicating a likelihood we would bring in guys that haven’t? It’s completely arse about, but I often wonder where you come from with your views so it’s not totally unsurprising. I guess we’ll know who was more in touch with things within 24 hrs when the SSP closes. My money’s all over Beams not being replaced by some rando.

I'm not sure what you're on about. I was merely pointing out that as we drafted the guy who was training with us it was actually a deal maker.

I doubt they'd be looking to replace Beams through the SSP at all, trusting instead the options already on the list. If things go pear shaped then they'll have the mid season option available. I think that's actually a good way to go given our list is already 47 players (including Beams). At some stage you need to give the kids we've got opportunities when they arise. If they do decide to select a replacement then it could just as easily be some eligible VFL off our list as some "rando" not training at the club. Time will tell.

You’ve jumped the shark here. Good luck with it and as ol mate JB would say baaaaaaaaahh

Thanks guys, good discussion. A few posters mentioned salary cap. I think that explains why we dont have any back up plans. It's a few years now we've carried players that wont play for the entire season. Keeffe Thomas Murray..sigh

I got a bit carried away with it out of frustration with some of the limp excuses being made for the club, but suffice to say when you have an injury list of 10 before the season has even started with at least 4 of those being out indefinitely (Varcoe, Greenwood, Langdon and Beams) bringing another guy in that will be out indefinitely is not best practice.

Without knowing anything about the Beams/pies exit strategy wonder if a delay to the season impacts the negotiations? Could be in Beams best interest to delay- staying on a list longer probably turns into more $ for him

Think he get same amount its just how he gets it

Reef McInnes

Club: Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Position: Midfielder

Size: 191cm, 83kg

Champion Data player comparison: Josh Caddy

Foxfooty.com.au says: McInnes is one of the countless players tied to an AFL club with the Charger linked to Collingwood as a next-generation academy prospect. He has shown his ability to play behind the ball at both NAB League and school level, but seems destined for a role in the midfield. He is strong in the contest and is a good mark overhead.

If there’s a mini top up draft a player like Sokol would be a nice fit. If we were worried about his tank, that would be less of a problem now with the shorter games
