List Mgmt. Trade & Free Agency 2025

With thanks to Tiger71 Grockadoc & Michaels live show last week we have an understanding of who is on our radar for trade/free agency at the end of the year.

For those that haven't seen the show those names were:

Harley Reid - we have strong interest in bringing him back to Victoria, along with every other Melbourne club it must be said.
Tom De Koning - identified him as a potential Nankervis replacement and have the money to throw at him to at least make him think twice.
Kai Lohmann - Lions player we've had interest in for a couple of seasons.
Matt Rowell - rumor that the Suns may look to let 1 of Rowell or Anderson go and we're having a look.

Now it should be pointed out that none of these names are locked in as coming to Richmond, but they are the names that we have strong interest in at this stage.

The other bit of news from that show was that we're also looking at keeping our 2 x 2025 R1 picks given they're likely to be both in the top 5-7 range, however we are looking at possibly trading out either/both 2026 & 2027 R1 picks for established players. We can do this without hurting our list build as we took the 7 R1 picks this year as well as another 2 in 2025, which means we could be well placed to be aggressive in the trade market for someone who may be contracted or not a free agent like Harley Reid.

Sorry but I don’t understand the logic behind the proposed players other than Reid. Reid is a no brainer, everyone would want him but I suspect Essendon will go really hard after him and he would be a good fit for them. He may be the reason they banked a first round draft pick this year. De Kooning to me is not a game changing player yet and is probably slightly undersized for the ruck. Better suited to a ruck/forward role. So why did we recruit Simms if we want De Kooning. IMO Rowell is to similar to Toranto and Hopper. Rowell may be the best of the three but we can’t have all three in the one side. Lohmann would be a great pickup but would he leave a top club in the premiership window to come to us. Zak Butters would be my target. He is very different to our existing midfielders and would satisfy our need for speed. He along with some of the surplus outside runners Brisbane and the Suns have picked up through their academies.

With all respect, I take it you didn’t see the middle stretch of the season where TDK was the best ruck in the comp till injury hit him.

He was smashing it

Until injury hit him. That’s one of the problems. Eventually playing against bigger ruck takes its toll. The other problems is that having a dominant ruckman doesn’t mean they are a game changing player. Grundy in the grand final proved that

TDK is an FA and we’ll have shitloads of cap space in 2026. If no ruck steps up to replace Nank, it is a no brainer.

The other trade targets I’m not so sure about. It really comes down to the price. I can’t see us landing Reid for two future firsts. I can’t see us landing Rowell/Anderson for less than two future firsts. Lohmann will be at least a first if his form continues.

The question with the midfielders will be do we need them, and can we afford them and our existing players. At least one of our picks in the 2025 draft is likely to be a mid. Are we really going to have a midfield composed of Taranto, Hopper, Smillie, Lalor, Hotton, McAuliffe, Ross, Sharp and Rowell/Anderson/Reid.

Of course there are no guarantees about Lalor, Hotton, Smillie and McAuliffe, and Ross is likely a fringe midfielder BUT unless we are trading out Taranto or Hopper (or both), I can’t see us bringing in two more likely $1m+ midfielders. Also, not sure why GC would want to trade Rowell or Anderson.

He was getting a lot of the ball but losing hitouts every game. He is likely to be the best available ruck, but I am not fully convinced he is the right guy for us. He may be still on the up but definitiely hasn't ever done anything to write home about. Blues midfield has functioned better when Pittonet was playing fairly well imo.

He'll either stay or go play with his brother

Pass on Butters. Why give up 2 firsts for him when we could have drafted Jagga Smith who is similar, or when we get Jack Leys as a father son in 2026 who is anothsr of these high possession hybrid midfield accumulators and is looking like a likeyly first rounder.

No on Butters.

What we need is midfielder such as Ed Richards or Hayden Young that can get the ball, spint forward of centre and hit a target. A Branden Starcevich type in the backline would also be very useful to replace Grimes.

A Shai Bolton type?

Branden Starcevich type to rplace Grimes? There is a massive gap between Starcevich & Grimes. Grimes schooled Chuck Cameron final after final. Starcevich conceded a Norm Smith Medal to Bobby Hill. Bobby Hill <<<Chucky Cameron.

What a forest gum chocolate (you never know what you'll get) Nahh overrated ballerina.
I used to love watching Shai Bolton when he was a tiger and will probably be in awe of him when he plays against us. But I am not sorry we traded him given the compensation we got and his request to go home. I hope he leads Freo to a flag but not against us.

Kiddy Coleman played on Bobby Hill in that Grand Final. Now Coleman, that is one of the most overrated palyers in the league. It was like playing Short on Hill. One got lots of touches and the other got lots of goals.

If we’re taking Rowell then we need to move on one of Taranto or Hopper. Only way I’d ever entertain that trade (if I’d entertain it to begin with)

Harley Reid’s excellent. So if he wants us, then it’s a no-brainer.

De Koning? Would’ve been a decent prospect if we didn’t take all those talls in the draft. Now it depends on how our talls are faring.

Kai Lohmann yes please! Really likes how he plays. If he doesn’t cost too much, then he’s exactly the type of player that a team like ours would go for.

In summary:

Yes to Kai Lohmann and Harley Reid

Maybe to Tom De Koning.

No to Rowell (other than if one of Hopper or Taranto leaves). Rowell is a good player, but our list balance is important too.

This is only my opinion of course, but that’s how I see it
