Do you not recall the first 9 x games of 2010? 0-9 with a sub-50% percentage. Some of the most enjoyable losing footy I’ve watched as the team was filled with promising kids and we could see a future.

We were being compared to Fitzroy and there were calls for AFL assistance. Our R9 team of 2009 had these players with 100+ games:

Shane Tuck
Brett Deledio
Ben Cousins
Chris Newman

That’s it.

The players over 26yo in that team?:

Ben Cousins
Shane Tuck
Chris Newman

That’s it.

That same team won 5 of the next 6 games in 2010.

That team didn’t win a final until 2017 - we know the rest.

So who cares if we are full of youngsters and who cares if it takes a while to be competitive?

We’ve got 10 players with 100+ games experience on the 2025 list and 10 players aged over 26yo. It’s more than enough experience and wise heads around the club.

It might be a tough season or two on the scoreboard, but I can’t wait to see our next generation grow together like I watched 15-years ago.

lol get off it, i've been over this and went through how much more experience we had on that team than we do now. And that the core of the 2017 flag team was already 2-3years into their AFL career.

you act like 2010 was some historically bad situation. it wasn't. It was a pretty stock standard "bad team" that you have a few examples of every year. We were coming off 5 1/2 wins the year before with a % of 75 & didn't have a MASS EXODUS of 5 of our top 8 players the year before. We also had Dimma in his first season coaching, a guy we now know would go on to win 3 flags. He was no joke. Yze has done exactly naught to show he has that in him. He quite frankly looked crap and boring.

Meanwhile the team Last year had TWO WINS with nearly 1500 games of experience of its BEST players walking out the door & no experience coming in.

There is exactly no comparison between the 2010 season and our upcoming 2025 season, i have no idea why you keep referring to it like it does. We won more games in 2009 that we did in 24 and didn't have a massive exodus. Only Bowden had any real form. We also lost "2 years dead" Brown, Cogs & Kane Johnson ( played just 22 games between them in 2009) + Kayne Pettifer(delisted) + Jay Schulz for a bag of peanuts before he went on to put up some great years. The side we went in to 2010 was probably better than the 2009 team purely because Jack, Cotchin, Edwards, Rance were entering their 3rd seasons & added this young guy named "Dustin". There is YADA comparison outside of your rememberries. There is NO comparison in my lifetime to the 2024-25 tigers. The situation right now IS the benchmark i will use in future tho. 2024 was easily the worst year i have encounted as a Tiger fan for enjoyment and quality of play. And we will go into next year with mostly the same team minus 7 of our best 12 players + a bunch of untried kids

They’re not. If they were serious they would first look at list needs.

Coming off a spoon, best draft eva? Use every pick & then DFA Knobel. PS draft for another slightly older player. Small fwds/defender.

Get Darcy, JUH or Cadman IN next year.

Taking 8 picks in the first 24 is just dumb. Split them over several drafts or package them to get 2 of the top 3 picks etc.

Look through the history of drafts mate - there are literally some years where there is barely 8 players get to 150 games out of the top entire 24 & at best 50% of the top 20 meet the expectation alone.

I think you're missing the likely strategy here by the club. We won't be taking our 8 picks as they currently stand- Blair has already said we will spread over multiple years.

If we take 8 picks this draft, it could look something like this:

Trade 10 for 13&29
Trade 18 for a F1&F2
Trade 24 for a F1,F3&45

Use the picks 1,6,11,13,20,23,29,45

That's before we even consider trading back a few places for other future 3rds which gives us a likely hand next year of:

3x Round 1 picks
2x Round 2 pick
1x Round 3 pick

We can then package up those R2&R3 picks to move up the order for academy bids or we can look to split the round 1 picks to move back or into future drafts.

Just because we said we'd bring 8 players in doesn't mean it'll be at the picks we currently have.

I would prefer to see a drafted kid playing 22 games over Membrey, Parker, Seb Ross, Stringer ~ who can play but are not the right fit for the spoon team cos of a Meehan inspired injury crisis.

Agree that period was completely different but I was fully invested and loved seeing a team full of kids out there- glimpses from Dusty and Cotch, Riewoldt coming on and kicking bags and the unknown of would Ben Nason or Relton or Griffiths be the next big thing. Would Rance stop turning it over and actually be any good. Would it all just click and we'd win a game by 50+. Just so many unknowns.

As long as the narrative by the club is right, it's actually an enjoyable time to be part of it and know you're potentially at the start of something special.

What drugs are you lot on lot on? We just finished bottom of the ladder with a historically bad 2 wins, & then lost near 1500 games of experience & replaced it with NONE. What possible reasoning do any of you have to think the team will go better???

If RT didn’t get overly excited about the draft we’d still have the correct spreadsheet pinned to this thread so I could tell you how many players have contracts expiring at the end of next year. I think it was around 16-18.

If we have a really poor year I can imagine half of those players might be given their marching orders and Prestia/Lynch might retire or move to another club. I doubt we’d be drafting huge numbers next year given the supposed lack of quality in the draft. So for those that love their spuds mashed, baked, roasted or deep fried, it will be the off-season for you.

In all seriousness though there is a clear reason we did not go down the recycled player path at this stage. We already have a lot of players on our list that fill the fringe player / potential list clogger role but just need the experience to prove where they belong.

How about the next Troy Chaplin? Mark Graham? Ivan Maric? or Brian Lake, Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis? Lots of recycled players have gone to teams rebuilding and been important in mentoring the group to eventually winning a flag.

What we are doing is the Philadelphia 76ers Hinkey strategy asking fans to "trust the process" thank tanking will equate to elite draft picks. 76ers have won exactly NOTHING after a full decade after that process & are likely looking a full rebuild within the next 2 years. We have done no moves at all to actually improve, or even vaguely replace the talent which left. To read people thinking we will improve is wild.


I struggle to see why the club would not benefit by getting some 28-32 year olds for FREE to support the 30 players we have under the age of 22. The list is insanely unbalanced & will put money on Yze getting sacked before his contract expires. You can't build a gameplan around this

I’m not sure why we would recruit players aged between 28-32. We have 7 players in this age bracket and Hopper will enter this age bracket next year. It is not exactly the age bracket you want players in when you’re starting a rebuild.

We do have list balance issues between 24-28. The problem is the only players worth recruiting in this age bracket usually cost the most in trades. At this stage it is simply not worth spending draft capital on players in this age bracket when we are about to enter year 1 of our rebuild. Plus, those players don’t want to come to us while we are likely to spend a couple of years at the arse end of the ladder.

We’re not tanking, we tried to keep our players but they decided to leave. We’re simply not replacing the experience lost because it is not viable at this stage. We will instead add this experience to our list over the next 2-4 years as our young players develop from playing senior games, and depending on how that goes we might bring in some experienced players. If we were to bring in 2-4 players in that 28-32 age bracket we are basically throwing away experience as they would probably take up over 50 games a year on top of the senior players we already have on our list.

As for the mentoring aspect of those senior players you want to recruit, did you forget about our senior players? Prestia, Lynch, Nankervis, Hopper, Short, Taranto, Vlastuin, Broad and Balta. Premiership experience, multiple clubs experience, talented players etc. I can’t see the need to add to this group for a mentoring purpose.

You may think we are going to be abysmal next year but we are really only 3-5 very good players away from being very competitive. The only question will be where and when those players show up. The beauty of having 10 odd players not established at AFL level playing each week is sooner or later they put their hands up as quality players.
