List Mgmt. Trade & Free Agency 2025

That's the difference.

Reid is being touted as a proven entity but he is not as there are still a lot of question marks. Butters is proven and then you get two other young guns.
only problem there is that zac butters will be a bulldog next year

Think you misunderstood the point I was trying to make
Of course he is doing his homework but even if it’s two years out it’s still only a player that will be available in two years

Compared to targeting a player via trade in any given year even if they are under contract
Those 2yrs may have started last year. For all we know he's been in Butters ear the last 12months.
Think FA is an easier option overall because the only obstacle is the player himself.

Yeah but you’ll be looking for a type across a 3-4 year window of FA periods. Like I’m sure if Blair wants a butters type to round out the midfield he’d be looking at 2026 for butters or could look at 2027 for say a Serong (no clue if his fa that year just a similar type). Blair will know what he wants years out and target them given his history of Chaplin/Prestia/Lynch/Taranto. Sometimes it’ll backfire like Taranto where you wish it had been 1 year earlier but that was still the missing piece for 1 more shot at a premiership.

Id Rather 2 new draftee's that wont demand what Harley does
$200k v $1.5 mil

Harley will be on $200k next year. ;)

Butters is the player that we should be concentrating on

Butters has all the traits we need and the man just never gives up and even though he weighs 62kgs goes in harder than most that are 90kgs

Would be the perfect addition to our midfield as a free agent
I am happy for Butters not to come, he will get in the way of our better players

there are better options for us, more will be available, Carlton, going down, Essendon going down, other players not happy, other teams going up shifting their window forward, we can pick up exactly who suits us given we are on a different trajectory to many

Butters may go to the Hawks. Who knows they may use CFC's first for Butters?

Yes and no
Because it also means that every other potential club have that same window to do the homework

We won with Lynch but you can’t assume you will win every time

Even Lynch was still meeting with the pies very close to deadline and because the only real cost of getting a free agent is salary the pool of potential suitors is also a lot bigger

As many as 7 other clubs could be legitimate possibilities in Butters ear 5 of them who could make the salary work and also be in better positions in terms of list and playing finals now instead of 3 years time

Trades also have big pools but having the available draft picks to make a deal happen limits the competition in that sense

No guarantee those 2 top picks will make it either.(Hell we don't even know if Smillie will make it yet).
We know Reid can perform at the highest level.

Agreed, no guarantees on anything, the 2 picks could both end up being better than Harley, its all a game of opportunity cost and IMO, at the moment, I'd be sticking with what we have and targeting a free agent with the cap space.

Others will have a different opinion, there is no right or wrong.

I am no expert but is the buzz team now the Hawks so players looking for it now will try and go to the Hawks?

will the Hawks want them?

Other teams

North on the rise but have to fill out their list.

Saints on the rise"'. """

other teams as well , who is Adelaide and Port chasing ??

Geelong are always chasing someone

What is Gold Coast doing, they will most likely rise, how do there academy kids fit in?

Same with Brisbane, top of the ladder, more young talent? What do they do?? How do they keep new kids happy?

if wc are happy to take this years picks id do it. compromised as **** draft if we were ever going to pick duds at the top end it's this year.

From what I understand very unlikely to be any academy or FS picks in the top 5 this year which is where our picks will be, becomes very compromised after that, our pick we traded to North likely to be around pick 30.

Yeah Nah.
I'm in favour of a Ruckman who does his best work around the ground.Centre clearance is vital but if our mids can make it 50/50 then the around the ground stuff if far more important.
Imagine giraffe(Ryan) around the ground hopeless.Oppos would run off him. There are exceptions (Gawn ).

Agree with his around the ground stuff, but that's what makes his position a conundrum. We moan at the lack of speed from midfield, and propose so many different ways to fix it, yet refuse to have a mature conversation about his role in it. I'm not blaming all the issues on Nank per se, but I don't think you can have an accurate conversation about our lack of midfield speed without having a frank conversation about Nank and his deficiencies.

Granted Nank is getting on but he's still ahead of anything we have.

Sure (and I'm disappointed in Ryan's lack of development in this area), but that's why my initial post on this topic talks about focusing on bringing in another ruck before looking at Reid (which seems to be 80% of what this whole thread has been about) or any other player that we could target.

Uwland is probably Sharps biggest threat for 1 atm so there will likely be at least 1 in top 5. But most of the rest club tied players will be mid first rounders at best this far out.

Actually think butters is a bit overrated. Can’t stand those dink kicks he does.
If Harley wants to come you make it happen. Do people not realise how good this kid is.
Not "is"

Could be!

Salary is something we have in spades.
FA is a great tool who have that luxury .
