And even if they weren't, they would cop the deficit.

Seems so unfair, each year GWS have access to top end talent.
Through their academy alone, they have picked up Williams, Finlayson, Hopper, Kennedy, Setterfield, Himmelberg, Perryman and will now get Green and likely keep their 2 first round picks.
If any of their top players (like Treloar or Shiel) leave, it doesn't hurt them as they trade em out for 2x first round picks anyway.
Seems like a bottomless pit of talent.
How have they not been more successful? but will they ever bottom out?

whilst they were blessed with a great academy zone to recruit from they've been smart and ahead of the curve unlike other clubs including our own.

I think that small forwards are easier to find and develop then Big bodied midfielders, or is this just an Essendon thing?

But think about it, all the great small forwards apart from Cyril maybe wingard early days have come later drafts (davey boys, Betts, Charlie Cameron to Crows, Fantasia was pick 50 odd) etc etc

We have Irving mosquito developing that might be able to take fantasia role and at worst i think they could probably get Dan Butler on the cheap. Personally id like us to see what the Blues offer Jack Martin then slip under their feet for something a little better but miles cheaper than if we had Jack Martin nominate Essendon again.

I also think Essendon would rather have something in the bank to land a big fish next year.

Richmond with Butler, Castagna and to a lesser degree Lambert

Eagles with Rioli, L.Ryan, J.Cripps

Sydney with Papley and Ronke

Geelong with Miers, Atkins

Essendon with Tippa, Fantasia

Brisbane with L.McCarthy and C.Cameron

Hawks with Breust and Puopolo

None originally cost much in a high draft pick and a lot have come from no where. Alot were running around in the SANFL/WAFL/VFL for a while

Having said that id be more than happy to give u pick 12 for charlie cameron

So with trade period opening Monday here is what we do :p

*Baguley and Myers - Retire - Thanks for the service

*Houlahan and Long - Delist - Thanks for the service

*Fantasia and #62 to Port Adelaide for Sam Powell-Pepper and #29 - Gives us the inside bull we need and some draft presence earlier in the piece

*Trade Daniher and #47 to Sydney for #5 and Papley - Gives us a replacement for Fantasia who is a better player in my opinion. Gives us the pick early to try and grab a gun.

*Trade #31 and #37 to GWS for #18 - Gives GWS more points for the bid on Tom Green. (If they want I would also offer them #67 for a few more points)

Draft

#5 - Tom Green/Caleb Serong (Bid on Green and then take Serong. Dominant Midfielder, yes he is short but he hunts the ball and we need someone this dangerous)

#18 - Finn MacGuinnes/Luke Jackson (Bid on McGuinnes and then take Jackson as the future Forward/Ruck partner for Draper Ruck/Forward moving forward)

#29 - Harry Schoenberg (Another inside midfielder who know how to tackle and hunt the ball)

#67/#85 - Upgrade Draper

Have at me :p

I'd also be looking for an upgrade on Zac Clarke.

The problem with the GWS trade, if my understanding of the rules is correct, is that if a bid for Green comes before pick 12 they need to use that pick to match, therefore the trade of pick 18 for points is useless.

This is kind of true.

What this does is gives them some more draft presence.

I think I got this right below. Someone can tell me if I am right or wrong.

*Without the deal I proposed they have #12, #18 and #57 as their top three picks

If Tom Green is bid on at #5 they need 1502 points (with the 20% discount)

They use #12 (1268 points) and #18 (985) and then have 751 points to add to their #57 (turning it into #20)

So they turn #12, #18 and #57 into Green and #20

So top 3 picks would be #5 (Green), #20 and #77

*With the deal I proposed they have #12 #31 and #37 as their top three picks so

They use #12 (1268 points) and #31 (606) and then have 372 points to add to their #37 (Turning it into #22)

So they turn #12, #31 and #37 into Tom Green and #22

So top 3 picks would be #5 (Green), #22 and #57

Did I get that right eDPS

Fairly sure you can't 'add' later picks.

So it would be a bid at 5 = 1502 points (inc. discount)

Pick 12 (1268) + 18 (985) covers that with 751 points remaining, so 18 slides to become whatever the equivalent of a pick with the points value of 751 is (~ pick 26), retaining their normal selections otherwise.

So likely it looks like Green (matched @ #5) + 26 + 57, whether they attempt to trade up the order to grab someone before Green and then burn their later picks on matching the Green bid (and possibly going in to deficit for 2020) is the unknown.

Edit: Seems like Melbourne are open to trading #3 for example.

So #3 = 2234 which would mean GWS would have to offer something like 12 + 18 + a 2nd round selection (possibly from us if we trade for Hately or Bonar)

I could imagine something like:

GWS In: 3 + 3rd Round Selection
GWS Out: Bonar + 12 + 18 + 2nd Round Selection

Melbourne In: 12 + 18 + 2nd Round Selection
Melbourne Out: 3 + 3rd Round Selection

EFC In: Bonar
EFC Out: GWS' 2nd Round Selection (~37)

His kicking was Jarmanesque compared to his handball. Terrible with his left, can’t comment on his right....never saw him use it.
If gaining Cutler is replacing Myers, except on a wing, I do not want. Also not keen to recruit and develop his inside game. Hopefully we've learned something from our experience with Langford.

I thought they spend the picks and any left over points are added to the next selection. This is why I am not a list manager.

Myers would be halfway at the 100m mark when Cutler finishes

Theyre different players. Cutlers an outside runner with agility and line breaking

This is true. The James Hird academy is more fluff than substance. Very rarely are there enough actually training to form a group and often there are only one or two boys there due to other commitments footy or otherwise. We have already been told to lift our game as far as the Tiwi zone goes.

Yet we're looking for a inside mid. If Cutler had a tank and could run all day I would be more interested, but even then his kicking is apparently not that flash.

Jackson Hately or Jye Caldwell seem closer to the mark. Caldwell's hands seem Parish quick and both hunt the ball. Hately knows how to kick goals.

Picking up Cutler no way relates to us getting or not getting an inside mid. Im not sure why theyre related?

I don’t have a view on Cutler, just on Myers’ disposal.

Usually they only have sessions during school holiday periods, its hard to get the kids together on school nights when most would already have footy commitments and live in different parts of melbourne. Though i think older academy members (16-18) can come in and do gym etc at the hanger when ever they like.

Compared the the Lions, Swans, Suns and GWS who actually have under 16 and 18 squads and play games.
