To be honest, this is the big sticking point for me.

We already hold two second rounders (31 & 37). Do we need another second rounder that we likely don't even actively use?

I wouldn't mind looking to a future second + Drew for Raz.
You can package 29 and 31 together to get pick 12 (back) from GWS.

Agreed big time.

Most people do heaps of cringe s**t when they're kids, we're just not on national TV so people don't see and remember.
Man I would’ve been doing Aker handstands from game 1. Sure I would regret it now but damn it’d fun at the time.

Everyone who is shocked by a bow and arrow celebration might want to give up watching the sport. Kids are more confident these days and more inclined to stray from the norms, get used to more exuberant celebrations in the coming years.

Personally I’d rather the AFL be full of characters than a whole league of “full credit to the boys” “one week at a time” types.

You'd trade away one of the most dynamic small forwards in the comp for a SANFL player and a future second? Blimey.

This is one case where we have the upper hand and (for once) I'm glad we have Dodo in our corner to drive a hard deal. Trading players like Orazio for fringe depth is a sure fire way to expedite our way to "rebuild" status.

Would it make a difference point-wise for them?
They get a little bit more. Probably could throw in one of the 4th round picks we won't use on top of it so they get the extra 150 or so

Please god no I'd take anyone except that knob end with the bow and arrow. If I went for Port I'd consider taking up a new hobbie.

Seriously wtf

Don’t care what they do if they help you win games. He only does after kicking goals, maybe our players such as Laverde would do something similar if they kicked straight?

I’d prefer Duursma bow and arrow over Heppell and Myers having a laugh after losing a game we should never have lost.

Port have a couple of NGA guys coming next year, not likely to give up future picks.

We can possibly flick some picks to move up.

For example would St Kilda take 9 (from Joe trade), 29 and 37 for pick 6 and future 2nd?
Gives them currency for Hill (Pick 9) and Jones (Pick 29) and Ryder (pick 37)
Gives us 5, 6, 31, 47. All hypothetical obviously but flexibility in thinking is key.

I get that, considering what Todd has been through the past 24 months. The club won’t trade him unless he wants it. I doubt they’d even ask the question of him.

Yeah I get that and he has good relationship with Hinkley apparently but in the end it’s a business and if Essendon really wanted him I’m sure they’d contact his manager.

The more I think about it, the more it seems less likely we don't get anywhere near what we rate him as.

Us Essendon supporters know his true worth when he is up and going. Truth be told though, he has not once played 22 games. His best is only 39 goals which put him on the cusp of AA squad nomination 2 years ago. He is not a great tackler by small forward comparisons, nor is he a high possession player. Preaching to the choir here but the upside of keeping him imho is bigger than the amount we'd likely receive at this point in time.

If he was all those things he’d be worth a top 3 draft pick.

Seriously whilst the opportunity to draft a gun is seemingly heightened being within the top 10 the reality says otherwise doesn’t it?

As I said before if you had a top 10 draft pick and ended up with someone like Fantasia you’d be pretty content wouldn’t you? But more often than not you end up with a Mitchell Thorpe? Kepler Bradley? Jayson Laycock? Laurence Angwin? Richard Tambling etc etc

More often than not? Do the top 10 from the last 15 years you'll get more hits than misses.

Do Essendons
Didn't realise Mitch Thorpe, Lawrence Angwin or Richard Tambling played for Essendon.

But ok if you want to change the goal posts and look only at Essendons top 10 picks in the past 15 drafts.

2016 - Andrew McGrath. Tick.
2015 - Darcy Parish, Aaron Francis. Tick, Tick.
2012 - Joe Daniher. Tick.
2010 - Dyson Heppell. Tick.
2009 - Jake Melksham. Tick.
2008 - Michael Hurley. Tick.
2007 - David Myers. Cross.
2006 - Scott Gumbleton. Cross.
2005 - Patrick Ryder. Tick.

8 from 10. Hell even if you want to argue Melksham, who will play 200 games, is a cross that's still 7 from 10.

And both of the crosses were injury riddled. We haven't made an absolute howler in the top 10 in the past 15 drafts.

Clearly you need to stop thinking about it then!
Best was 39 goals.
Got injured and played poorly through it.
Has now gotten treatment at the club's expense. Should be good to go.
Top 10 pick or a player.
I'll cope with the disappointment of not receiving adequate compensation somehow. In the meantime I'm sending hope into the ether.

Now compare to other clubs’ top 10 picks.

The premiers with some of their first round picks:

Cotchin - Brownlow medalist
Martin - Brownlow medalist and 2 × Norm smith medalist
Riewoldt - 3 × Coleman medalist
Rance - Best defender of all time

Question is...can McGrath, Parish and Francis reach that level?

We got no one in that caliber in the team...Daniher is the closest, with Zerrett, Shiel and Hurley. But they are not in the best in the competition.

Harsh on Myers, before injury he looked a jet (which you have noted).

191 cm, blazing speed and a 65m kick off half back? Sign me up. Chronic back issues ruined his chance at a brilliant career.

Even so, the last 18 month's have caused a bit of revisionism when it comes to Myers career (not you Bonce specifically, but this board in general). He was a really solid player for us for the best part of 5-6 years as a midfielder. Both St Kilda and Adelaide came after him hard at different point mid-decade.

The cliff came quick for sure, but let's not rewrite history and say he was always the player he was the last 18 month's. That would be unfair

Tigers were a laughing stock for years with their infamous misses in first round. But eventually they hit the mark. Point is regardless of past picks top 10 picks can turn things around.

History says you only need one or two good - great drafts to build a foundation for your team, then solid drafts after that to build the list.

Hawthorn in 01 (Hodge and Mitchell and 04 (Lewis, Franklin and Roughead)
Geelong in 01 (Ablett, Bartel, Stevie J, Kelly and '99 (Enright, Ling, J.Corey and Chapman)
Richmond in 07 (Cotchin and Rance) and 09 (Martin, Ashbury and Grimes)

It can change quick you nail your early picks and if you can get them in clumps, that is the best way to do it.

Our top 10 picks are not the issue. There are many clubs like Collingwood, Melbourne and even Richmond of old that have a worse track record than we do. If anything, our biggest issue is drafting outside of the top 10. We don't draft the Grundy's, Gawn's, Fyfe's, Parker's and even Tim Kelly's. Zach Merrett is probably the best player we've picked outside of the top 10 by a mile. Even that, he's not to the standard of the aforementioned guys. Hooker was good too, but it's easier to find KPDs outside of the top 10.

We always seem to go for flankers. When we do, we completely butcher their development anyway.

If anything, we have more reason to make sure we get as many top 10 picks as we can.

McGrath over Taranto or mcluggage cross in comparison and what we needed, good player but...

Parish and Francis? TBA but some wanted to trade them this year. There not competition A graders.

Daniher a father son?

Heppell tick

a tick? Sure over Fyfe???

All clubs struggle to find diamonds outside the top 10. Some solid B grade role players with aggression and size would be a nice addition.
