Aaahhhh, so basically BS.

I went and had a read of the Richmond board and managed to trace the Smith thing back to a post that began "Damien Barrett reckons...." At which point I just laughed and then enjoyed the lunacy that followed including the post that said 4 of Steele Marchbank, Smith, Patton, Tomlinson, Ahern and Kelly for Lids and steak knives.

Anything where the initial post begins "Damien Barrett reckons...." Should be considered pretty much valueless (and I'm being kind and mindful of the swear filter)

The Collingwood board didn't have much to say beyond "lots of talent in the NEAFL" and "I heard somewhere Smith was available" (not realising that he's played half a game in the NEAFL coming back from injury) and "didn't he just re-sign". Most of their recent talk is trying to offload Witts to the dogs for Jong, or to Richmond for some player or other including Reiwoldt.

Man, they must really hate Witts, they spent most of last year trying to get us to take him for pretty much every trade they could think about. It seems like every trade option from Collingwood involving any club whatsoever, has to include a Witts option. Poor kid must hate it there where nobody wants him.

Even funnier that they believe he is worth a really high draft pick because of his potential. Laughable!

Anyway! I'm hoping we send our future 1st rounder to you guys for Ahern. Would be a bit of a risk for you guys but I bet most teams would be banking on us falling off a cliff after this year.

What is stopping Tomlinson from cementing his spot in your 22? Do you guys think he will be a genuine key position player in time?

Ahh, the endless debate about Tomlinson.....

He wants to be a forward, we have a few pretty good ones already, and when he does get his chance down there he doesn't do very well at it. For a while there he was a great wing/swing, roaming the outer wings and linking our backline with our forward line - but Scully, Whitfield and Kelly are all quicker and more mobile. He's done very well in defence when he has played down there but he doesn't like it and when fit there are a lot ahead of him. In the NEAFL this year he's been playing as an inside mid (the biggest inside mid you'd like to see) and racked up the disposals doing so - but again, there's lots ahead of him in the seniors. He's played the role of second ruck chop out at various times and been ok without being particularly good.

Thommo's problem is that he is a jack of all trades and a master of none. The ultimate utility. The trouble at the moment is that all our specialists are up and running and playing well (and Patton is even doing ok when going down back) so the opportunities are limited.

He is a great clubman, has never given any indication he is unhappy or wants out (despite the rumours) but he may end up leaving to get his chance to play permanently forward somewhere else - at which time he might come good as a forward and go on to have a great and stable career. Or, the club he goes to might discover his versatility and use him anywhere and everywhere - but that's a gap filler role and no guarantee of consistent games when the "specialists" are healthy - just like here - who knows.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him go - but equally, I wouldn't be surprised to see him stay either.

Where is all the talk? Your post is the first to mention Devon that I've read.

Damian Barrett anounced on last nights footy show Richmond tried to get him when he was last out of contract so his 2+2 came up with they must be after him again this year. Even though he's contracted and best 22 and pretty settled in Sydney now and best mates here for another 4 years. He did also say that he was on $500k a year which i thought was surprising.

I think Richmond are interested in Smith but I don't see him going anywhere. The only players that may leave are the ones after game time, bigger money or bigger roles. Most of your best 22 will be sticking around

Just a question for the Giants supporters:

Would you accept a deal of Deledio for Geelong's 1st Rounder, Steele and Stewart?

Apparently along with Tomlinson has agreed to terms to come to Carlton.

Makes too much sense.
Yeah we might.jave to sweeten that deal somehow. Could just be SOS is.confident your clubs culture and coaches can being out thier talent. Who can say he's wrong?

What is the knock on Stewart?

Inside Football Ratings has him kicking bags in the NEAFL every week.

Ahhh NEAFL vs AFL - can't compare. There's plenty of players who rack them up at NEAFL level and it just doesn't translate - Whiley used to rack em up can't get a crack at Carlton, Mitchell used to regularly get 40, even got 60 one week, still didn't get picked for the swans for another 12/18 months. Even Palmer racks them up in the NEAFL and when Tomlinson can get 40 you know the quality of opposition just isn't there.

The knock on Stewart is that in his 18 senior games he's kick 18:19 and moved the ball at under 60% efficiency.

His NEAFL form just has never translated to AFL - a bit like a lot of other players really.

That's a solid return.

Pretty sure Carltons leading goalkicker is Everitt whose kicked 15 odd this year. And he just got omitted.

It'll be interesting to see how Tomlinson and Stewart play with consistent gametime and their preferred position.

Plowman especially, but also Sumner and Lamb, and IMO to a lesser extent Phillips have been very good this year with consecutive games under their belt. Jaksch has also just about finished his apprenticeship in the VFL and looks more than likely to play seniors this weekend.

In fact... this weekend Plowman, Sumner, Lamb, Phillips, Jaksch and Whiley are selected.

Is that why you're wearing orange socks?

Well, I suppose that's part of the knock isn't it. "Solid" - not great - "serviceable" is about as far as I would go. I trust him about as much as I trust Palmer in front of goal and as a ruck chop out he ranks way down on the list. He can do the job, but pretty much as a last resort.

Would he flourish somewhere else? Possible, maybe, who knows. But in our forward line? There's a fair few ahead of him.

Depends what Steele and Stewart attract on their own.

Let me think about that one...

No.

Either Steele OR Geelong first rounder plus Stewart seems right. Not all 3. Would be very happy to have Lids at that price. Think Dal Santo or Goddard style.

Yeah I'm probably being a bit negative. Ihave watched your guys a bit partly becuase I'm a fan of Plowman. I like solid reliable KPD's that makenthe right decisions. I have been impressed with what you've done with Phillips. My considered opinion:-

1. Tomlinson jas recently played a mobile role in the NEAFL with 50 odd posessions. At times at that level he has reminded me a little of a young Stephen Kernahan in his younger days at the Bays. He was so dominant he could do pretty much much whatever he liked anywhere on the ground. I swear I saw him kick to himself on the lead once, but cooler jeads insisted at the time he just shanked it and tried to recover.
I'm not suggesting seriously Tomlinson is within a bulls roar of him in class. And NEAFL standard probably part of that perception. Unlike Kernahan at that stage he seems to struggle at AFL level where team structures are what they are. No real place for a wingman/midfielder without ground level contested ball capacity. Last week I was really disappointed he was closest to an out on the full, cos I knew his kick wouldn't be effective and it wasnt.

Stewart: As per other posters. Just add last two years he has come from the off season as a best 22 player, albeit with Cameron suspended this year and McCarthy missing. Both years he has moved down the pecking order as the year progressed. Tells me.it isn't work ethic or willingness to be coached. Maybe struggles with the pressure at AFL level.
