Also on Dawes, people are quick to rubbish him on this seasons form, however are quick to forget that in 2010 he formed a pretty lethal combination with Cloke and was a huge player in their premiership.

Dawes kicked 30 goals from 20 games in 2010. There has never been anything lethal about Dawes in my opinion, he was a solid decoy but that's about it. That said he is young so has plenty of time to come on.

This is modern footy. If you know you can't play finals next year then the worst thing you can do is scrape together 8-10 wins, finish 10th and have pick 10 in the draft.

You are better off doing what Carlton, Melbourne and the Giants have all done - get belted every week, finish as low as you can and get the best picks to help the rebuild.

So you trade your older players while they have currency and rebuild with younger players who wil be there when you challenge again.

Hawthorn did this with Thompson / Hay / Everitt. Doggies need to rebuild so they may be very happy to talk to us about improving their draft position.

If this is the case we really have no picks the dogs would want. They already have 3 in the first two rounds that are much better than we have.
And as for McCartney to be happy to let them get flogged, I am not sure an educator (as they call him) would want this as self belief and esteem is important for young players. Demoralizing losses - which they would be- only hurt some of those players. I think people think losses make players hungrier however perhaps hawks are the poster boys that this may not be the case. I think psychology comes into it a little more than we think - surely stuff coming out of research of professional sports in the US would say so.

I think it boils down to Lake and whether he wants to have a shot at the cup before his career ends. Sure he is contracted and probably on a lot of coin. But if he genuinely wants to come to hawthorn, puts his balls on the line and willing to put in the hard work, i think there will be something done to accommodate.

I don't think he is required in all seriousness, but you can't deny that he 'was' a great backman in his prime. As I said earlier, I'd rather look to acquire strong bodied and hard working midfielders with a big tank using our picks. We have enough KPD on the list as it is, and Roughy also.

"Triple M believe that the saints are very interested in Mitch Brown from WC, despite reports that Brown is off the table."

Posters hoping that we pick up Luke Delaney have no idea. Have you actually seen him play? He can't kick, is slow and isn't much chop as a lockdown defender which is what some people think he is good at. We would be going backwards if we are resorting to picking him up.

How many of Buddy's 13 came while he was his opponent?

Actually, I thought Brian Harris was better.

Who are these key defenders bunky?

Up forward we have 'keys' in Buddy, Rough, Hale and Gunston, if he fills out. All are currently in our best 21. I don't think we have any key forwards outside of this, so there is no depth there and Rough is the only one that is versatile and could pinch hit down back.

Down back we have Schoey and Gibbo, who is forced to play up a class or two in size and weight. Stratts is a third tall, as is Gilham. Guys like Litherland, Kelly and Boseley are all currently only third tall height/size so who knows and Boumann's done, as previously posted by others in the know.

Oh and punters, please don't suggest Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrimley.

It's one of the great myths of our list IMHO. We have only limited flexibility with our key forwards, and absolutely no depth down back.

:(

I have Shoey, Gibbo, Gilham and Boumann as our key backs. thats 4 players vying for 2 backline positions. And we have Rough who can pinch like you said. I think thats enough coverage, of course if we dump Boumann we probably will need to look at another to replace him.

6PR tweeted yesterday that Hawthorn are showing interest in Mitch Brown from the weagles - apparently not up for trade, but the question is being asked. I'd prefer him rather than Brian Lake/Harris.

Given Geelong are looking at Caddy & McIntosh, will they have room for Rivers? What are people's thoughts on him?

Brisbane has put a contract in front of Clinton Young as an unrestricted Free Agent.Nothing official yet, but confirmed by List Manager Rob Kerr.

What sort of compensation would the AFL give if he signs? Not sure if Dasher would want to leave though..

He's a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

It will depend in part in the size of the contract.

Personally, if we were trading Young I would want a pick between 25 and 30. Otherwise I would rather keep him. However, the compo pick may only be a 2nd rounder which would be about pick 42.

Stupid system where compo picks are tied to finishing position. Melbourne could lose an identical player and get a pick at the start of a round, we get a pick at the end of a round.:(

Hopefully we would get an end-of-first-round compo pick, approx no. 25. I'd be happy enough with that.

They are Banded and linked to our ladder position.
So not Band 1 or 2 as they are essentially late 1st round. Band 3 and 4 are late 2nd rounds (44 ish).

Bands 3 and 4 are the most likely but depends on the Contract offer.

Given trade week falls within FA month, I'd assume compo picks can't be traded due to the fact that the 'net loss' from FA is not finalised yet (?)

Yet I see people suggesting trades involving compo picks

That means that if a club finishes near the top of the ladder, doesn't matter if the player is Ablett, they'll only get a pick around 20. I'd rather the compo pick received be tied to finishing position of team that loses agent or team that gains agent, whichever one finishes lower.
