Heatherley is ours if we want him. He isn't available until next season and he would be listed as an International Rookie which is a way of getting an overseas player
that has more risk to it than a local. It is an additonal number to our playing list. If good enough he is then moved to the primary list just like other rookies. This is the same as Ciarian Kilkenny but he is rookied as of now.

On Kurt Heatherley, the Combine testing is very impressive - I have seen him play and knew he was pretty fast but these tests rank him beyond my expectations. Listed as 192 and 195cm. Has played very effective football in the APS. Also, has a year with Melbourne boys in a football sytem which is very helpful. Plus anyone who is prepared to leave their Country and live somewhere else as a 17 year old is dedicated.

If he continues to perform on the path he is on he will be a KPP from 2014. Quick, very good build, decent kick and dedicated to the roles he has played in. It has been in defence often. I do not have a hanlde on his contested marking, forward potential or skills below knees. Someone else may provide information here.

I have been quiet for long enough but now I just can't stand it any longer. I really don't understand why everyone is so hell bent on getting a 30 year old bloke who has had a series of complications and operations over the past couple of years including a hip operation. I am not a hater for Brian Lake, in fact, a few years ago I thought he was very stiff when Scarlett was getting all the accolades, when in fact I thought Brian was an A grade back man. His poise under pressure to be able to mark deep in the back line was impressive. However I think this was a couple of years ago and unfortunately as things go his best is past him. So for me it is very confusing why everyone is so set on getting Lake.

I understand that our back line has come under a lot of scrutiny over the past two seasons but why is this knee jerk reaction happening now. Our back line was not the cause if our premiership loss. Not enough effort and hardness for long enough was. With an aging midfield perhaps we need to look to recruit there, but in saying that we have quite a few in the wings that could come in. Perhaps a nuggety small back man which could replace goo in the future but others would say that cheney or whitex could take that mantle. Perhaps an outside midfielder who can lay a hard bump or tackle may be in order as we definitely have a lot of run but not much hardness.

I just think maybe we shouldn't get sucked in to what the media says and find the best prospect with the future in mind not the today because I don't think Brian is that.

1- Lake helps in 2013 and perhaps 2014 so we stay near the top because our backline is lacking
2- Lake too old and in fact he doesn't address the area of need.

I agree with you - midfield nos, skill and grunt are the mantras of today's AFL. We have succeeded (runners up is still a success) because of contetsed footy. We were beaten on the day not because of KPP but we are just a little thin in the midfield.

Because all season we struggled to contain power forwards. We lost to Geelong after the siren, because Shoey couldn't handle Hawkins. In the finals we managed to play Cloke and Tippett back into form. We were very lucky Sydney don't have a power forward, or we would have lost by more. Shoenmakers will be a quality footballer in the future, but he is not their yet. He still needs to develop, learn how to defend against quality forwards. Lake will not only release Shoenmakers to play on lesser players he will also be able to learn a lot from Lake (who is one of the best defenders of power forwards in the league). Also Lake quietly had a very good year for the Dogs, was the highest placed key defender in the Brownlow.

We are smack bang in the middle of our premiership window. Mitchell, Burgoyne, Guerra and probably Hodge only have 2 maybe 3 years of elite football left. Brian Lake also has 2 maybe 3 years of quality football left. We have to go full tilt for our 11th premiership. I would happily trade away our all our draft picks, if it means we land another premiership.

You can't just expect us to continue challenging for a flag when Mitchell, Burgoyne, Sewell, Guerra and Hodge retire. These guys are the elite of the elite footballers in the competition. Yes we have some nice young players, but unfortunately they are not of the same ilk as these guys.

The one positive for us though, is the introduction of Free Agency happened at the right time. We might be able to buy some elite midfielders to replace these guys. But it is no certainty, and we should give it everything we got now while we can.

I would be happy to trade our 1st round pick for Lake, as long as the Dog's pay a fair portion of his salary.

We beat Sydney in the midfield (more inside 50s, more contested possessions, more clearances, more centre clearance, etc). We got exposed with our game plan in the 2 term, and we wasted too many opportunities in front of goal. Thats why we lost.

However in the qualifying final and preliminary final we got exposed down back. Our midfield was good enough however to get us over the line.

There are not many holes in this team, thats why we made the grand final. Thats why we are premiership favourites already for 2013. The one weakness we do have, is ability to hold power forwards.

You have to be optimistic and say Shoe will be doing the job soon, maybe next season. needs to keep playing those forwards you speak of to do that though.

BUT
If we dont see Gilham or Boumann as being credible back up then we do need someone else now. But if we do recruit someone, we'd be expected to play them - what happens then ?

Probably shoe keeps doing what hes doing, the new guy gets the other big forward and either gbbo or stratts get easier or smaller opponents, or someone is rested.

A side effect would be that all the guys stand a better chance of longer careers - which is good in itself, and that Injury can be covered

we did not belt Sydney in the midfield at all
Anyway, yes we do need someone who can match the power Fwds , we were , IMO , only an injury to Gibson or Shoey away from disaster this year. I'm so sick of the crap about " we have by far and away the best list ", what a crock of shit that is
Truth is we have some major deficiencies in our key backs and also our midfield , Whitex was a huge loss at finals time

If we got lake what would people think of this:

Lake to No. 1 fwd
Rough to No. 2 fwd
Gibbo to No.3 fwd and third man up

This means Schoey to the forward line with Bud and Gunstall.

Would it work?

I don't want Lake so I'm probably the wrong guy to reply, but I will say, despite my thinking for many years that Schoe needs to play on a fwd flank, now that Gunston has been bought in, I think it cements Schoey into a backline role. If rough goes to CHB, Schoe stays at FB for mine. Then we trade for either a: a forward that can ruck (but please not Dawes or I will vomit everywhere) or b: Hale plays that role and we nervously hope that Max can ruck week in week out.

Yes agreed belted was defiantly an overreaction. But I certainly to believe we beat them in the midfield.

I think Sydney's "sling shot" game plan, and wasted opportunities is why we lost. Not their midfield.

Of course lake had plenty of the ball and got Brownlow votes - the dogs got flogged most weeks thus plenty of ball for him to gather. As for bringing someone in to help shoey so he can learn and we can make the most of our premiership window perhaps we should ask the doggies how that works. Hall was much the same - they missed their window and I think that it did more harm than good to their upcoming players in the forward line (not that I rated any of them that highly to start with)
As for lake having 2 more years I am not sure that he will be as effective as you think. And then he sits on our list taking up a crucial spot but not offering any depth.

Beides I am not even sure that the dogs will even want to do business. They leaked so many goals with lake. Can't imagine what it would be like for them without him.

True, but besides Sewell, Sydney had the two best mids on the ground in okeefe and Hannebury, so bit hard to say really
Fact is, for all the improvement of the year and the foreseen improvement for Schoey in the future, he was smashed quite a few times this year, and for me he is not the answer to the opposition key fwd
Rough could be that player, think Trent Croad or Chris Grant for recent Fwds who have gone back and excelled
As for Lake, yes bloody good player but IMO I would love more than two seasons out of a big name recruit like that
Also on Dawes, people are quick to rubbish him on this seasons form, however are quick to forget that in 2010 he formed a pretty lethal combination with Cloke and was a huge player in their premiership.
There are reasons that we aren't privy to that account for loss of form, so I think the Hawthorn footy club could turn that around for him , and with all the Cloke crap this year, you would think he would be pretty keen to shove it right up there arse
All that said and done however, I would prefer Frawley over them all, and as far as Weller, if you couldn't get a full year with the suns as a young fella with his previous reputation, then either you have a bad attitude or you were overrated to start with

I doubt Clarko would move Schoey forward after all these years of developing him down back. He is improving and next year he will be shutting down Cloke and Tippet...I hope

Although he did move him fwd at times this season... I don't believe we can just pidgeonhole him at CHB , I believe if he was freed up a bit he could even play on a wing at times, his kicking is sweet and he moves well
Rough to CHB is blatantly obvious to me

This is modern footy. If you know you can't play finals next year then the worst thing you can do is scrape together 8-10 wins, finish 10th and have pick 10 in the draft.

You are better off doing what Carlton, Melbourne and the Giants have all done - get belted every week, finish as low as you can and get the best picks to help the rebuild.

So you trade your older players while they have currency and rebuild with younger players who wil be there when you challenge again.

Hawthorn did this with Thompson / Hay / Everitt. Doggies need to rebuild so they may be very happy to talk to us about improving their draft position.

I have always been a fan of Roughy down back after the Dawson Rocca game but If Clarko doesn't like it we have to live with it
