Luke Delaney from North Melbourne would be a good cheap option as that big strong defender, still only 23. He is a much better option then that Brian Lake suggestion that some fellow posters have been mentioning. ;)
I don't quite follow the logic that a bloke that is on the fringe at North would be a better option than one of the premier defenders in the league over the past decade, given we need the defender here and now.

If we get Clarke then either Gunner is pushed out of the team, Hale is being phased out of the team or Rough is moving to the backline. Four talls in the forwardline is too many

Rough to the backline. Back there he doesn't have the opportunity to miss easy goals.
Hale and Clarke rotating between ruck and forward line. Gunston keeps doing is usual role

this sounds good! someone make it happen!

Call their bluff and get him back 2 years later. The AFL has given these 2 teams everything and now they want to screw around with Melbourne.
I'm not 100% sure on the F/S thing, but if they express interest, don't they just force Melbourne to use their first draft pic?
Viney is reasonably rated isn't he? So it is not a massive screwover??

Posters hoping that we pick up Luke Delaney have no idea. Have you actually seen him play? He can't kick, is slow and isn't much chop as a lockdown defender which is what some people think he is good at. We would be going backwards if we are resorting to picking him up.

Maybe he's got a good missus....

Im not sure if there is another thread to discuss other teams draft/trade situations so im sorry but here i go anyway.

The Jack Viney situation is interesting. If i were melbourne recruiting manager i would let GWS or GC take him with their first pick. Id tell todd to get in his sons ear and say walk out on them after your initial 2 yr deal is up and request a trade to melb otherwise i go in the draft. Melbourne will then offer GWS or GC a second round pick and they can take it or leave it.

No club would touch him knowing he will just walk out after his 2 year deal is done. If luke ball fell to pick 32-33 or thereabouts Melbourne wont make the 8 2013 or 2014 so he will only need 6-9 clubs to pass on him to get to Dees.

Just a thought but I wouldnt let these 2 pissant clubs who have been given the world any breaks and it would be a bit of karme for scully and the like.

But why would a kid play & grow with mates his own age, just to leave for a shit club that his Dad played for? It's Melbourne mate... They'll be worse in 2 years than they are now.

If I was a gun footballer playing with the best kids in the country in 2 years time (which GWS & GC have) & about to start to challenge for the 8 & some clown at My Dad's Old Work called me & told me that despite his work (club) being shit, I should dump my mates & chance of glory to go & waste myself there, I'd respectfully tell him to look for me on TV next week when I was having fun & earning more than he could offer me...

I agree completely. I can only assume some posters are recruiting for Box Hill.

Well as I see it we have Guerra, Burchall, Burgoyne, Suckling, Stratton, Murphy, Gibson(and if necessary Poupolo and Shiels) doing essentially the same thing whereas there is only one Mitch and he's 30. Any statistician will tell you that clearances are a vital indices in winning games and I worry about where ours are going to come from post Mitchell and Sewell (or in the case of injury).

Next season we will have Alex Woodward coming back into our team - I think we are hoping he can continue to learn from Mitch and Sewell and become a key clearance player for us in the future.

Perhaps youre right. I do feel that Whitecross is seriously over rated on these boards though and the thought of being able to secure a good player from another club on the merit of this hype is appealing to me. Ive copped a bit of slack for it because he seems to be popular amongst supporters but I just notice his disposal being very average and his best being limited. Now of course there is the knee. The talk of him being a future captain is ludicrous to me. Again just my opinion.

I am not a fan or hater of whitey but one thing that he does very well is work in VERY tight spaces and he has the ability to shimmy tackles very well. His movement reminds me of G Ablett Jnr, the way he moves in tight qtrs.

Couple of quick notes before I head off to work.
- Would fully endorse a move for Brian Lake, when he is playing well he is flat out unbeatable and can rake in the contested marks/intercept marks.
- Getting an established backman like Lake would allow Shoey 2 more years of development on the 2nd string forward, he would grow in leaps and bounds.
- Jack Viney has frequently been touted as Pick 1, Pick 2. If I were the Dees I'd be grabbing him first thing, rather than risking him go to a new club, make new friends, learn a different play style, and absorb a different culture (he'd likely never come back).
- Zac Clarke, haven't seen a huge deal of him... but from what I have seen I think he has shown rapid and excellent development, he could be an excellent acquisition. Though if he doesn't want to come home, too bad I guess.

I've heard the rumors re: Zac Clarke, but i haven't found concrete statement from either freo or Zac's management that he has indeed requested a trade back to Victoria. From what I've seen of him - would he a great pick up. But not sure what i'd give up to get him into the team.

I'm not sold on the fact we need a KPD. I think we need harder working mid's to complement the ones we have - along the lines of a K.Jack or a D.Hannerbury. Work both ways, tackle hard, and high work rate. WhiteX has stepped up in this department and probably had a bigger effect going out that we had expected. Hopefully with Woodward and Hallahan (and maybe Tommy Schneider) we have a couple more hard nosed mid's who can apply the "frontal" pressure up the field. This alleviates the pressure down back and allows the third man up from the long bomb into the FWD50.

Didn't Freo confirm he definitely wants to come home?

Agree, we should be all over it. I don't think Grimley, Patto or Broc will be on the list next year and we already need to succession plan for Hale. Max remains an unknown quantity, and I'm not sure the sub rule has helped him.

Is contracted for another year. I know that doesn't mean he'll definitely be there, but you'd think we would honor the contract unless a club wants to trade for him.

Viney has stated if Melbourne dont pick him up, he is not ever going there, and will do his utmost to prove them wrong for the rest of his career. That type of attitude to me sounds like what Melbourne actually need. He is rated by many in the top 10, so pick 3 is not to much of a stretch, especially as Melbourne have pick 4 as well. (Scully compo). To me Melbourne need players who are extroverts, strong in belief and character and willing to lead. In that statement, without knowing the kid, he has hinted he may have all those characteristics.

Hi Just checking if this guy kurt heatherley is our pick ? the afl website says he's a hawks scholarship player..does that mean we get the first go at him ?
Yes, but not for another 12 months.

Heatherley is ours if we want him. He isn't available until next season and he would be listed as an International Rookie which is a way of getting an overseas player
that has more risk to it than a local. It is an additonal number to our playing list. If good enough he is then moved to the primary list just like other rookies. This is the same as Ciarian Kilkenny but he is rookied as of now.

On Kurt Heatherley, the Combine testing is very impressive - I have seen him play and knew he was pretty fast but these tests rank him beyond my expectations. Listed as 192 and 195cm. Has played very effective football in the APS. Also, has a year with Melbourne boys in a football sytem which is very helpful. Plus anyone who is prepared to leave their Country and live somewhere else as a 17 year old is dedicated.

If he continues to perform on the path he is on he will be a KPP from 2014. Quick, very good build, decent kick and dedicated to the roles he has played in. It has been in defence often. I do not have a hanlde on his contested marking, forward potential or skills below knees. Someone else may provide information here.
