The fox footy article looks like it was written by a St Kilda staffer. Howard wants to accept a $3 million 5 year deal because he wants to play in defence. Pick 18 is considered overs by many. No mention of him being contracted to the end of 2022.

The more I think about it, the less attractive 18 feels. If a deal gets done it really needs to be 12 or the Bulldogs 13, or we’ve been fleeced once again. Of course, no deal at all is the best outcome by a mile.

St Kilda can do what they like but they’re the least prestigious (and among the lowest media profile/sponsorship $$$/post football career) of nine Melbourne-based clubs, and if you look through the list of brothers playing AFL, when they aren’t drafted to the same club it seems most are quite happy staying apart, and when thats not the case its largely a brother moving home to a two-team town where the only option is to play with brother or be sworn enemies.

Regardless, thats St Kilda’s problem. Throwing out offers to every player yet declaring future picks off the table is a game Port (as holders if a long contracted player) should not tolerate...if thats even been said by St Kilda!

It doesn’t really matter what the actual chances are, what matters is if st kilda think they are in the box seat if he returns.

if St Kilda genuinely think they’re in the box seat and want to save every future pick, then logically they dont need Howard on a 5 year deal for half a mill+ to play King’s exact role.

Ergo that is not an assumption the list managers are working on

if it is 18 then I hope their is a Future 2nd round pick (or player coming back to us)

I think with all this excitement surrounding the talk of him being worth a top ten pick that we are forgetting his real worth. 18 is probably about right. Potentially 12 cos he is contracted and they need to pay overs to get him. But he's not really worth that and I don't think we will get it.

No trade then cool

We can’t replace him with pick 12 or 18 this year anyway

As you said, he is contracted. It skews the worth.
The other thing is he is a flexible tall with four or five years into him. Not many like him available at the moment. He also fills a need for them.

Shit draft & a dearth of talls available make him worth playing hardball over but ideally don't trade because our KPP stocks are pathetically thin.

Has anyone else made the link between Dougals manager (David Trotter) who played at Norwood in 2008/9 and his Norwood captain James Gallagher who is St Kilda list manager ?

How do people hold it in their heads that Saints are offering a $3m contract to a player with 3 years to run on his contract yet he somehow isn’t worth pick 18?

What I Keep asking, and I’m yet to get an answer either here or the main board, is for someone to name a kpp as young and good or better prospect as doogs who could be pried free, and what would they cost?

Despite asking that question a dozen times I’ve had zero replies

Because there isn’t another kpp doogs age and quality available.

Supply and demand.

It’s why saints have thrown the chequebook at him.

If someone really really wants what you have, and they absolutely can’t get it anywhere else then what you have is very valuable

My only concern is how switched on our club is to this or are they swayed by the obvious media pressure from Victoria.

Also, if Dougals leaving to play in defence why not go to kangaroos who want to play him in defence rather than st kilda who said this ............

"If Dougal wants to come to the Saints, he fits in as a key position – whether that's back or forward," Lethlean said.

Picking and choosing facts to suit their narrative.

Played some sanfl games this year, lucky to get a second round pick.

Contracted to 2022 and being offered $3 million over 5 years, no that dress is black and blue.
