Makes you wonder what we could have got for P.McGinnity.
Well my original thoughts were why did we give Masten such a long contract extension for example.

I get the outside impression that WC is very kind to its mid-career B grade players in terms of contracts and will give them every opportunity to stay at the club if they want to.

I feel like we aren't likely to lose mid-career players to free agency, unless they are from interstate, because they are treated so well by the club.

That's great for them, and for player retention, but I feel like we are missing out on opportunities to benefit from other clubs' interests. And I feel like it maybe makes then players a bit too comfortable

Anyway plenty of time left yet and if we go to the draft with our first two picks plus Waterman as our third then so be it.

All options are stop gap though aren't they? Vardy the best of a bad bunch, given he can go forward too.

Nic Nat going down really forced out hand, this is what we are seeing from the club.
I think Minson is a better option

DFA so comes free and we aren't paying for someone who has football beyond 2017 left in him like we would be for Vardy

Get Minson for 2017 and someone like Cameron or Goodwin as a project in the rookie draft

What's Geelong likely to ask for in a trade?

Not much you would think, as they have cap issues and players they want to trade in

It might just be me but the prospect of trading for Vardy isn't particularly exciting. In fact it's the opposite as we're trading to solve a one year issue whilst not improving the midfield which needs it most

What role does Vardy have beyond 2017. I don't see one
Is having 3 listed ruckmen a 1 year issue though? Particularly when we play with 2 and seemingly don't want Gov in there.

I don't see the Vardy possibility as a one year stop gap thing. Petrie is seen as that and rightfully so but Vardy is somewhat different as he can play forward and play it well. His fitness is my concern more than anything. If he can stay sound and play regular footy I see big upside for our team with Vardy whether NN is there or not.

Cameron or Goodwin will have as much of a role as Vardy going forward so that kind of goes against you "1 year issue" argument.

I believe WC want a forward ruckman, rather than pure ruck, which Minson is.

Agree with the cost, not sure that Vardy would be worth more than a 4th rounder, perhaps even 5th?

Not sure what role he gives beyond 2017.

Like all trades the Vardy situation comes down to what we need to give up. Minson as a stop gap / insurance is the preferred option but if Vardy is cheap enough would prefer him as there is upside and (potentially) a longer term option/solution.
Or we trade him for a gun mid next year.

Giles will be 30 in 2018, so probably on cusp of retirement anyway.

2018 we'd likely have NN, Lycett, Vardy + (rookie project ruck)

Well said Biggie

When does Lycett's contract run out? We might be thinking about that in the background to all of this

I think Lycett is pretty much solid 22 now. Not sure he has much cause to leave beyond homesickness for SA... (lol)

So pick 12 (1,268 points) + 34 (542) = 1,810 Total

Picks 22 (845) + 24 (785) = 1,630

So if we swapped with GC they'd be ahead on points, but we might be in a better position to get SPS and Bolton.

I know Twomey's latest predictor had Bolton @ 20 and SPP @ 22, so we could be around the mark.

I've been a broken record on doing this, but given the way GWS are going about things I feel we're less a chance of seeing a slider to 12...

Methinks you are getting your salt and pepper mixed up!

Vardy can play make no mistake about that. The question is that he has been very injury prone but at 25 years old he is just reaching his peak and if West Coast can keep him on the park, he could be an asset in the future.

Much cheaper options though

Vardy's durability is a concern also

With the GWS steamroller picking up even more momentum, this is WC last throw of the dice whilst in the window.

Need ready made players that can perform at a reasonable to potentially high level. Treading water isn't going to help us win a flag with the current crop.

Vardy will come very cheap... Has been told by Geelong he won't be re-contracted. So a very late pick will do.
Cheers

If true then that makes a bit more sense

A few on Geelong board think 33 is adequate because he is in demand?

Also

Trade radio saying Vardy has an offer on the table from Geelong but looks set to go to the Eagles. Toured their facilities yesterday.
