Trading the #1 pick

bulldogs sniffing around every club..looks like cloke. and 2 more big named players..

Is one of those "big named players" have a first name of "pick" and a last name of "1"? Otherwise I think you're looking for a different thread?

I think anything with Brisbane getting O'Meara is predicated upon the PSD, and even if a pie in the sky PP eventuated for Brisbane it wouldn't affect the PSD order - that's still Essendon's.

I hear what you are saying. I am still hoping sanity prevails and the number one pick rightly goes to Brisbane when common sense prevails at league HQ.

*BUMP*

Essendon has stated it would be open to trading pick one for the right offer.

What would your club be willing to give up for it?

This may get laughed at. In fact I know it will, but I'll throw it up anyway.

Let's assume no one else offers a deal for the number 1, because this offer would have to be on the lowest of the lot.

Anyway, would Essendon consider pick 1 for our pick 3 and a player from our dung heap? By dung heap I mean blokes who would hopefully fulfill whatever need the Essendon club feels a player from our dung heap could cover. So think Barlow, Ballas, Ibbo, Suban or one of those types.

Now hear me out. This is all done with the idea Essendon were always going to pick Brodie as number 1, but he will fall to number 3.

This is also done so that we can trade with GWS or Melbourne for Lobb or Hogan. Players that wouldn't necessarily consider a move to Essendon, so dealing with those clubs wouldn't be as likely.

So, basically would Bombers trade down 2 picks to still likely pick up Brodie and get an experienced player for free in essence?

I mean this would be done to secure a deal with GWS.

Obviously GWS would be able to offer a much better deal to secure the number 1, but my view was suggested if no deal could be reached with them.

Everything else being equal, I think the deal I've proposed is low risk, but possibly viewed as low reward as what will you get out of Barlow, Ballas or whoever on your list for say 50 games.

Also we could possibly deal with GWS direct ourselves for the number 3 pick, but if that didn't guarantee them McGrath, then that's why I suggested the scenario before.

Every year this gets mooted but it seldom happens....Last time was in 2001, when Hawks traded Croad & McPharlin to Freo....We got Hodge & Mitchell out of it.:thumbsu::D

Can only see Bombers giving it up for 2 early picks inside pick 8....Which means Gold Coast.

I reckon you could get McCarthy for pick 3 and save some hassle.

GWS would do it - win-win for both parties, Essendon wont do it.

GWS Out ( Essendon In ) - 8, 16, 17

GWS In ( Essendon Out ) - 1, 37, 55

Yeah not a chance from Essendons stand point.. it would require two top 10 picks to get pick 1, and even though there isn't a "standout" i'm sure all teams have a preference to their #1 on the draft board is but how highly they rate them we wouldn't know.

Edit: Don't you mean pick 7 too?

If we could get a top 5 pick + a top 20 pick, then yes I would do it. Obviously the preference would be a top 5 pick + a top 10 pick, but I don't think any team who can do that (GCS and probably GWS) would want to do that, even if we evened out the points. I definitely want to stay in the top 5 as that seems to be the slightly better core of players (although others such as Tarranto, Venables, Marshall, English all have their fans too).

The big question mark will be GWS. If they're not delisting too many and with a lot of top quality academy players they may want to consolidate quantity into quality. But given they can trade for 2017 picks, not sure if they'd put up too good an offer for #1.

hahaha - cheers.

No the points total are near perfect for this year. The deal ... I suggested for Essendon this year is perfect - perfect draft this year to do it with a blanket top 12, but again they wont do it .

Footy wise Essendon would be the huge winners ...

..... its all about the money & advertisng dollars gained from pick 1.

Rule 1 - In bottom finishing sides "bean counters" always over-rule footy people (you can bank on that ... )

We would prefer to do 5 + 7 for 1 and our 2nd or 3rd.... something that equals points and you can then get who you want at #1 (gain money and advertising dollars for #1 pick..... again ;)) then pick up your two academy guys.

We split 1 into two bites of the cherry, EVERYONE WINS!

If we equally up points with a blanket top 12 ... Sure you would prefer to do 5 & 7 ... but we would want more in the back end.

5 & 7 in this draft could well outstrip 1 ... So for this type of deal is too heavily faired for you.

This deal I could live with .... your deal I'm happy to take two bites of the cherry for ourselves.
