Yeah last week he was limited to bursting out of stoppages, accumulating the footy, catching guys holding the ball.
And as the post above this alludes to - Laz still not one touch.

I’d have Phillips over lazzaro every day of the weeek

Think it would come down to the mix. I prefer Powell over Philips but if we are missing a ball winning mid with burst, that is more like the Philips from Junior days. If we want an all round classy mover and ball user who sets the play by hand and foot, then I go with Powell. Based of having LDU, Wardlaw and Jy, little bit of class might be preferable.

The match report above clearly nominated him as best on for the yellow team. Also that he never stopped working.

When your side is winning by a 100 points of course it’s going to be easier to look good. Harder to look good when you’re on the side being pumped.

No probs with Will Phil. Today would have been great for him. Resilience and leadership under tough circumstances.
His pre-season has been exceptional and he will be a star.

I think there’s space for both Phillips and Powell.

I just can’t see lazzaro being ahead of either of those two

Hmmm, the only footage featuring Laz was him fumbling a ground ball....
The footage you’re referring to I saw Lazz collect the ball a split second later and perfectly kick the ball 30 metres laterally in one movement to Larkey’s advantage directly in front of goal.

We all see different things.

So he should he was in an acre of space in a match sim with a fellow blue member protecting him.

Yet he still fumbled and toe poked the ball before gathering. That’s the sort of shit that gets him hung out to dry under pressure.

Riiigggghhhhhhtt…

So you’ve judged him completely on that one piece (moment) of vision?

I’m guessing you were down at match-sim today or various other sessions during pre-season to support your damning conclusions on one our most improved and committed players?
Lazz might not make it but it won’t be based on that one piece of vision.

Laz's fumbling was a costly 'feature' of his AFL games, unfortunately. For a small with no real outstanding weapons, clean ball handling is a must, IMO.

Don’t disagree. I’d say that that very costly aspect of his game however which cost him his place in the senior squad 18 months ago has improved.

Time of course will tell and he’ll definitely need to make the most of any opportunities that come his way. Our current midfield depth makes his position precarious. What we can guarantee however is that Clarko will gift nobody games. If he gets the call up it will be because he earned it.

Well they're not all competing for the same position so the comparison is pretty moot.

From watching the match sim last week and what else I've read on here, Laz is having a great pre season in that half forward - mid role. If he gets a spot it will be because of the advantage to the entire team, not on who's more highly rated.

Here’s the match sim report from Glynn Lavender

The match sim you weren't expecting.
Today's training included a 2 x25min half match sim.

Each half was stopped about halfway through for a quick break, recalibration and then stopped abain with approximately 2:30 on the clock to practice 'hold for the win' or 'come from behind' specific plays. Neither of which were successful.

This was the day the Blue team came out to play, with a team predominately comprised of players in, or near, the top 23 with the Yellows comprising of a fair few VFL players making up the numbers.

The final score was Blue 97 to Yellow 7.
In blustery windy conditions, not disimilar to Fridays match sim, the play was much cleaner and the skills significantly better.

Our 'run n gun' game plan was far more effective in this game and the ball was moving at pace for nearly the whole sim.

Looking into this a little deeper the Blues forward line of Larkey, Curtis, Zurhaar and Duursma were matched up against the Yellow defence which of course was the possible second tier defence. Having said that Chom played for Yellow defence and I have one word for his performance..... SIGNIFICANT! He struggled a little early, Larkey led him a merry dance (Larkey seemed to be just enjoying the day and may have been going at 80-90% too). Chom got battered a fair bit, took some decent knocks, landed hard a few times, looked spent several times - but he kept going AND was the best intercept marking player on the ground. He was Careyesque at times with his ability to take a mark he had no right to get. Lots of learning ahead for him but plenty for the coaches to work on and he certainly caught their eye.

Will Dawson also played defence for Yellow and did a few good things from negating marks, filling in the hole and taking some grabs himself.

But the Blues forward line was very effective. Larkey was leading and marking well. Curtis was everywhere. Zuurhaar in 3rd gear was marking and kicking goals and Duursma, who didn't get as many opportunities continued to prove he is elusive inside 50 finding space on numberous occassions and being rewarded for that with some good marks and several goals.

A scoreline like this can look a little depressing but our main defensive stocks time and again stopped the Yellow team from being effective. K. Dawson again was a stand out, Biggy did some nice things, McKercher, as we are coming to expect, was full of run and follow up running from half back.

Stand outs and noitceable things.
Powell in the middle was a step above pretty much everyone except LDU who was probably going at 90%. Powell did some great steps around opposition players, his lightning handball was on show and he looks to be in serious contention for a prized mid spot for Round 1.
Comben as mentioned was, at times, looking like a real solution for our backline.
Lazarro ran hard all day and is pressing his claim for Round one too.

Sheezel spend time in the middle, at half forward and at half back.

Curtis Taylor played the who game and kept presenting on the wing.

Hardiman looked strong coming out of defence for Yellow and didn't waste a possession. He offered plenty of run and wasn't rewarded enough by team mates for that run.

Sellers for Yellow tried very hard but had few opportunities (as the scorline suggests) and against the stronger defence but worked hard all day.

Ruck was mostly Greenwood and Maley with Greenwood looking to have the experienced edge.

Back to Arden Street for the boys next week.

My favourite part 😂
yea... when i read that i thought: so neither the team trying to win it, or the team trying to hold on were successful? Was there a time paradox or some rift in the multiverse loose?

Is it just me, or are some of these "highlights" a little underwhelming?
Wouldn't call them highlights. Highlights suggests they went through the footage to find the best bits.

They're just random clips they took throughout the day.

North Big Footy: Why is the match sim only 2 quarters?

North Big Footy: Lazzaro is having a good preseason.

North Big Footy: He still fumbles. Not best 22.

North Big Footy: I have Will Phillips ahead of him.

North Big Footy: Limited footballer.

North Big Footy: It ALWAYS comes back to Will Phillips.

North Big Footy: Should have taken Hollands.

North Big Footy: How's he doing at Gold Coast?

North Big Footy: He's at Carlton now.

North Big Footy: What? When did that happen?

North Big Footy: Got traded in 2023.

North Big Footy: When's the intra club?

North Big Footy: Let me know if you find out, I'm going to see how Phillips goes?

North Big Footy: Don't bother he's a bust.

North Big Footy: He had glandular fever for FFS, this is his year.

Yep I think you've got the gist of how forums work.
