For what it's worth, here is a source that shows LMac has the most turnovers per disposal of anyone in the AFL at one point (couldn't find anything for last year). Anecdotally, it definitely feels like a major weakness for him still.

This is a side note, but I have also found it really odd all preseason that Corr is supposedly so important for his leadership in the backline, when we have a literal captain, who is captain because of his leadership qualities rather than pure footy ability, back there. Like shouldn't LMac be doing the leading of the defence???? That is a hard one to fathom, for me at least.

I feel like he’s getting worse every year too

Defence starts up the ground as well. LMac, Magoo and the rest down there have been smashed around because of leakage out of the rest of the ground. With a potentially stronger mid field and some small forwards harassing to keep the ball in there, HOPEFULLY the backline won’t be so much under the pump

It’s worth **** all mate. A single statistic means little.

Let’s back lukr in to a return to form after a tough year last year.

You may recall that Corr has been touted for his leadership every year since joining. He aspires to leadership and please reflect on the fact that we have the youngest list with the least experience. So leadership is important - more than ever.

Fathom that rather that having a crack at our captain.

I'm not having a crack at his 2024 - I haven't seen it yet. I think he's fine as a lockdown defender, but has a poor disposal when trying to move it up the ground. I hope he improves, and learns to dish it off to our elite HB disposals instead - it's okay to acknowledge your weaknesses and play around then. My points are

  • his disposal is historically suspect (something he can work on and improve, but needs to do so)
  • I find it weird that a non-captain is the 'need' for leadership, instead of the leadership-focused captain when they are of comparable age/experience.

I don't think either of those points are controversial.

You can defend Luke all you like but he has to lift. In the hawthorn game last year he kicked out on the full in our def 50 when under no pressure, we were switching the ball and he just shanked it out on the full. That happened on more than one occasion last year. He also continually kicked the ball down the line to the Hawthorn out number when the instructions were to kick short on the 45 to the inside. If you want an example of the kick that was meant to happen, look at Corr in the 2nd term.

So our leader was showing his leadership by simple skill errors and not following the coaches instructions on ball movement. He is not automatic selection on last year's form. Hopefully this year he does better and we don't have this chat anymore

I think that turnover stat actually makes him look better than he really is, he's so much worse than other players in a similar % range. The problem is he's still playing the Brad Scott "long bomb to a cluster of talls on the wing" gameplan and doesn't seem to be capable of learning anything else. He makes young players give it to him so he can totally waste it. The other players' turnovers would be due to trying too much or getting caught under pressure without an option, moreso than Luke's. He turns neutral situations into disadvantages with his stupid long bombs.

I agree that he hasn’t been great.

But it’s difficult to argue with stats that show he commits less turnovers and has a higher disposal efficiency than our best players

Doesn't the disposal efficiency stat consider a 40+m kick an effective disposal? So a player who bombs it long to nothing gets a higher percentage.

Also, the type of turnover is important. Lmac's turnovers seem to often directly lead to goals. Probably because he is on the last line.

I believe you are correct re long kicks. Other than an opposition mark, a long kick is always effective

Disposal efficiency is one of the most bull-shit stats that gets cherry picked to suit some argument. We know this. It has been documented.

The stats never capture the hand ball to the feet that is technically an efficient disposal that leads to a tackle, turn over or free kick. What about the I’m going to play keeping’s off and sell a teammate with an opposition player hot on his tail who gets poleaxed. Two Luke Mac specials.

Please do not retort that this didn’t happen multiple times a game during the 21-23 seasons.

I really want him to have an awesome season. He is the co-captain for Pete’s sake. But in order for him to be effective he needs to be smarter and show more leadership. I believe he can.

He is not getting dropped. I would much rather he have an amazing year than be a semi-embarrassment getting shown up on the field when he is in poor nick.

Also, Sheez is getting it twice as much and picking riskier and more creative avenues out of defence.

Again, I agree McDonald needs to lift his game.

This isn't true. He regularly hit up accurate shorter kicks last year.

He's far from perfect but people here only see a few shit things and ignore the rest because of the bias they hold.

Luke has been carrying the captaincy in a poor team, is limited in terms of talent and has tried to overcome both of these things the wrong way.

Once he realises a) that he can't fix stuff with his footy and b) that he is a moderately talented but spiritually important bruiser, he will be both a better captain and more impactful footballer.
