Pretty sure I've mentioned this somewhere before, but surely there is known DE amongst players & if there isn't there should be.

When players are making in game decisions this can be all the difference - for example,

if Wardlaw extracts the ball and has options of Jy or LDU, Jy has DE of 71% & LDU 76.2% = +5.2% chance of effective disposal
LDU has the forward options of Zurhaar or Ford, Zurhaar DE of 63.2% & Ford 78.5% = +15.3%

Poor decisions equate to a cumulative effect of pressure. It's all the 0.5 of a second per possession lost that steals our time and space.

AFL players can move at 5-7 meters per second when at speed, so three poor decisions can steal 1.5 seconds of decision making time or 7.5-10.5 meters of space - it's a lot.
What’s fords retention vs Zurhaar.

Stats are easy to use but don’t reflect the true impact of a ballistic game like afl.

If they did Mr golf shop would be the most sought after maron’ in afl

You can find DE as an overall statistic but im yet to find DE broken down into different areas of play. Half back/centre clearance/inside 50/general play.

I always find it strange when they do these type of drills why the groups aren't smaller? You spend 80% of the time waiting for your next turn.
That’s the best part of it though

16. Zach

Recruited to play in defence but is still relatively new to this role. Provides good rebound and run but needs to dispose of the ball better when pressured ie no more hack kicks. Nevertheless seems to fit in with the Clarko run and carry game plan. I expect him to play Round 1.

Agree absolutely wholeheartedly. You either can or you cant. We have a bunch of players that are really average kicks.

History tells us no matter how hard you try and improve your kicking you’ll always be average if you start out average.

Theres an abundance of players for examples. Atley was one player who had pace, fairly clean with his hands, had decent footy IQ but would blast the lead and destroy the kicks. He did this from game one until he retired.

Im not saying its an easy skill to execute. it isnt. Kicking, running flat chat and hitting a 40-50m low kick to a sprinting player closing distance is ******* hard. This is a skill gap. Jy, scott, McDonald all butcher the ball by foot.

The worst thing that can happen when Jy and Scott do it is an inside 50 ball and the team is on the spread, when the ball is inevitably turned over its easy transition footy for the opposition and almost immediately results in an inside 50 the other way.

Scott is a 7/10 kick jy is a 5/10 in the mentioned scenario.

Inside 50 delivery has been putrid for too long. Needs to change, the suggestions that change can happen? “ThEy CaN ImpRovE thEiR KiCkInG” is nonsense. Jy and co need to either do it or there is no room for mediocrity.
I think we need to separate some aspects of this 'can or can't kick' conversation.

Poor kicking is often just a by-product of fatigue, which is more common for younger players who gas themselves more often in games. IMO its incorrect to say that kicking cannot be improved - I think you absolutely can keep improving right up till the late 20's as you make your body stronger and more able to do the things you ask of it.

My thoughts are that the thing that is hard to remove is kicking instincts. Lets take someone like JZ, who had these instincts in close to ALWAYS bomb it out when in a contest. He never was able to fully change that, if he felt any pressure he would not hang on or look or even think about placement, he would always go for taking up ground.

17. Riley Hardeman

His draft profile outlines that he is an outside player with good footy IQ and with good kicking skills. We are not overloaded withe good kicks so he fits a need. At 185 cm is a good size and the 75kgs will increase over pre-season. Might not start in Rd 1 but is Likely to debut sooner rather than later. Will start across HB but may eventually push up the ground.

That was the last game I saw live Gaso. He kicked it a minute before the siren from nearly directly in front. I think if he'd kicked it we would have missed LDU and drafted Sleevo.
