Averaged almost 23 disposals a game going at 75% disposal efficiency.
I think people just have this memory of him having s**t disposal because it probably cost us as crucial times on occasion.

Disposal efficiency can be deceiving.
A lot of those can be 10 metre chip kicks, backwards even.
He had zero hurt factor offensively and often started teams rebounds at half back.
Great team man etc, but this couldn't be a greater example of a guy who can play AFL but won't be in a premiership.
Was at Hawthorn, they tipped him out.
We made him a regular.
They were winning flags then, we were "around the mark".
Not Gibbos fault, but the mindset that saw him selected each week hurt us bad gas for a long time.
Thank heavens that seems to be over.

Astounded to this day the lack of respect that Gibbo gets for what he provided for our club.

His apparent inability to hit targets and turn the ball over was exaggerated to the point of fantasy. His disposal efficiency was higher than most of our supposed better users of the ball. I saw him hit absolute bullets to team mates on many occasion. Turnovers happen when you’ve run twice the distance of others with repeat efforts when others couldn’t keep going. It’s not a coincidence we have not gotten close to finals since the days of Gibbo.

We’ve not had a winger close to his level (though I think we have a couple in the wings now) since those days that he ran himself to exhaustion well into the dying minutes of last quarters. I’d take Gibbo 7/10 to Smith 9/10 any day of the week considering a) he was ours, and b) we passed up on the opportunity of taking Smith when he was right under our noses anyway.

Wasn’t he consistently the leader in metres gained? He was a gut runner

We do have hall doing that often but we need a replacement

What was often missed with Gibbo was his defensive running. In transition defensively he was a beast. When our back line was open and our defenders spread and caught one on one inevitably Gibbo was the first man there for the outlet after having busted his gut to get back to help. He was an excellent team player, if not an offensive weapon. He know his role and executed it to a very high level week in, week out.

Right, so the winning run people attributed to the 3 talls (Petrie, Hansen and Tarrant) circa late 2012 had Gibson and the great Liam Anthony in the team.

So, how did the talls get their one on ones?

Easy, if you sat on the 2nd or 3rd tier behind the goals it was like set plays from Madden football. Gibson and Anthony would get to about 55 m out when the ball went in our backline and started to run "wide receiver" routes. As soon as our defenders got the ball, Gibson and Anthony were already on the move and their respective opponents were generally ball watching. Often both were involved and in our possession chains and generally Wells or Harvey would get those dinky kicks or handballs and we would go coast to coast.

Gibson was still in the side when we made prelims and often we had 2 taggers in those finals. Jacobs on the inside and Gibson on the outside.

I read way too many of these comments before realising that we weren't talking about Josh Gibson. I was thinking that none of these comments make any sense.
We’d better be careful, as it’s not on topic…

Let’s take it to the Sam Gibson past player thread guys.

The winning run when we got flogged against a slightly above average team by 100 points in an elimination final?

I've said what I think.

I'm just blown away by how some people think that era and the tactics and many selections were anything but mediocre.

Some talk about those prelims like flags.

Gibson was absolutely under appreciated in those finals runs. We also had smart players like Leigh Adams playing in the forward line who would drag their opponent away from the marking talls to create leading space.

Bon with some nice run and carry out of this movement drill, Flynn’s decision making has left a little to be desired,

Chom with a massive smother on Flynn as he tried to love it out the back 50

Shiels vocally massive and acting as that on field coach

Curtis got out the back a few times in those movements looks like he will be pretty slippery this year, absolute handful for small defenders

On holidays mate?
Just a cheeky Sunday Monday away.

They’ve now moved to the blue and yellow groups practicing the last kick i50

3 on 3 just outside the arc back and forth trying to be patient then hitting that last kick
