January/February are always exciting and optimistic times for every club. I love reading the reports from the track watchers. What I hope for is improvement from our "fringe" players and hope they can become real AFL standard and perhaps play 100+ games for NMFC.

When I look at our list and I look for players who need to improve to become apart of a hopefully competitive starting line up I identify the following;

Young
CCJ
Powell
Mahony
Lazzaro
Ford
Dawson

Are supporters who get to training (hard for me as I live in Central Vic) seeing obvious improvement (physical or skill level) that will mean some of the above become more valuable.

I don't get to training but I always have a chat with a North guy.

Young- No real comment, is going ok.
CCJ- still seems slow, is playing as a FT KPF.
Powell- is flying
Mahony- a good tackler and that's about it
Lazzaro- won't die wondering, gives his all
Ford- penny hasn't dropped about what is required to be a successful AFL footballer. His ability isn't doubted.
Dawson- looks likely.

Disposal efficiency can be deceiving.
A lot of those can be 10 metre chip kicks, backwards even.
He had zero hurt factor offensively and often started teams rebounds at half back.
Great team man etc, but this couldn't be a greater example of a guy who can play AFL but won't be in a premiership.
Was at Hawthorn, they tipped him out.
We made him a regular.
They were winning flags then, we were "around the mark".
Not Gibbos fault, but the mindset that saw him selected each week hurt us bad gas for a long time.
Thank heavens that seems to be over.

I think the issue was Scott and his lack of focus on ball retention, it turned a lot of players into hackers of the ball, because there was a radical difference between Gibson in 2017 (his last year with us) and the prior years. Gibson changed his game quite dramatically by 2017 given Harvey was forced to retire in 2016 we didn't have that go-to guy for the short delivery inside 50 so players had to adjust how they played and I think that year in particular gave us more of a window what he was capable of as a player.

Gibson was a significantly better player in 2017 and all it took was one pre-season to focus away from hacking it inside 50, he went inside far less frequently and he achieved a much better more efficient result.

A player that is doing something over and over for 100 plus games isn't a shit player that isn't doing what the coach is asking him to do, he IS doing what the coach is asking him so for a lot of player issues who are regular players, I mostly blame the coaching department.

Take all of our amateur defensive 50 errors that leak goals, the only guy that was hung out to dry for his errors was Young in 2021 and he came out after working on it over the pre-season to be a much more reliable defender in 2022. McDonald has never been disciplined for his errors so he continuously leaks goals by ball watching, positioning poorly at stoppages and just now and then having lazy execution with his disposal. He is capable of a lot better but the coaches don't demand it of him.

Watching today - CCJ presents well but he’s a bit unco he stands out because he’s a ****ing monolith but there’s just something that doesn’t make him absolutely dominate as that big key forward

Bon with some nice run and carry out of this movement drill, Flynn’s decision making has left a little to be desired,

Chom with a massive smother on Flynn as he tried to love it out the back 50

Shiels vocally massive and acting as that on field coach

Curtis got out the back a few times in those movements looks like he will be pretty slippery this year, absolute handful for small defenders

My biggest issue with Bonar is his lack of offensive output, if he adds that to his game with his athletic profile then he jumps up a few spots in the depth chart.

I feel it’s a confidence thing with Bonar, at present he really has had a stop start career, once he seems to get it going, getting those small wins, he gets injured for what ever reason.
A block of decent games, a few good runs and I think we’ll see a player.

Every time I’ve been to training, Dawson has been quite prominent. Some blokes you barely notice, but he seems to be constantly involved.

I have part of that day off...tempted.
At least do something. Do. Don't think, Themanbun don’t hope. Do. At least you can say, 'I did this, I went to the match sim, I wrote a report. At least I did something for the sake of Big Footy. Do. Act. Don’t think, act. Eye on the ball. The contest is still the same. You must write the match report. And more than that, when you write the match report you support the Big Footy posters who can't attend. And you must be determined enough to stick with us and do it. The Big Footy crowd might laugh (they won't). It might go wrong (it won't). I'm game enough to tell you to do it. Are you game enough to back me up? Are you game enough, Themanbun , to back me up on that? Go to training. Write that report.

2023 early contender for POTY.

Would we a better structured team with someone like Weideman, or CCJ?

The former can play forward, back and a bit of ruck. The latter is more of a ruck/bit part forward.

Interested in peoples thoughts.
