Roast Travis Cloke a bad day at the office

I think a good barometer of where Trav is at will be next week. He went into beast mode against Richmond last year (I think it was Rance that was on him) and hopefully he can get himself confident enough (which I personally think is an issue for him) to really come out and be that dominant forward we know he's capable of being.

Lonergan tends to match up and play pretty well on him, so - for mine, anyway - it wasn't a lack of effort or want, he was outsmarted and outbodied.

The frustrating thing for me was that he had a couple of good chances late that could have seen him overcome a dirty night and contribute when it counted (like bloody Hawkins down the other end). Might have been the case earlier on in the night, but service from the mids wasn't to blame for the late fumbles

Maybe play him a bit further up the ground and push White closer to goal.

Trav has kicked 2 goals in 3 games. He must learn to hit the score board against quality defenders not just against the weak ones. Swan & Cloke are probably 2 of our top 3 paid players in the team & they are not giving us anywhere near what is required. Having said that, why do we continually revert to a stick Cloke in the square & bomb it on his head strategy? We need hard leading & movement from everyone including Cloke.

Cloke needs to play up the ground. With his tank he could even have a run on the wing from time to time. Goldsack's versatility is useful but he just is not having a big enough impact. I would replace him with Witts and allow White to remain as a pure forward so that Cloke has a free reign.

This.

When Cloke has a stinker deep in the square why not use his elite endurance to work him into the game? It baffles the mind! I got very frustrated by our reluctance to help him work into the game.

By the end of the game his mental state was shot and he was unable to get us over the line. No excuses though, there were at least a couple of marks that should have stuck!

We are too inexperienced and lack the skills needed to be constantly switching plays as too often they hold on for it too long, letting the opposition flood back causing Cloke to be double teamed and the forwardline to look like a massive cluster****.

There's no use having Cloke - supposedly the best contested mark in the comp if we don't maximise his strengths (his strength) by giving him one outs through quick delivery into the forward line.

That first quarter was bull shit, we were more willing to ride out the Geelong attack then attack ourselves. Ugly football.

If Cloke is being Double teamed maybe he should get out on some long leads from the goal square, he clearly cant handle 2 opponents and thats ok but he needs to think how can i get the ball inside 50 and kick some points

Still not convinced that we have a game plan. Defense looked chaotic and unstructured. Lots of panik football and some players that run into team mates (Maxwell, Lumbaba)

DEscribe for me what Hawthorns game plan is, Fremantle's? Sydney's?
So many people crapping on about game plan. Its an oval and you need to move the ball from one end to the other, short kicks, long kicks, handball, through the middle or along the boundary...there really isn't that many different game plans. Its more about how well you do each one, and when your players know when to switch from one (boundary, short kicks) to another (middle, long kicks).

I think the club should make a thing of the appalling treatment he receives from defenders - at least then the umpires might look out for it, and it certainly couldn't do him any harm. He gets continually scragged and his opponent can basically do anything. If Reiwoldt or Buddy received the same treatment they would lead the comp for frees.
That said, he was very poor last night and dropped numerous sitters

Maybe Trav needs to have a chat to the umps like Stevie J did last night.....he got the next two frees and he drew attention to himself immediately.

wow.. another picture of a PREMIERSHIP COACH!!!!..... Do you have all these pictures of Wallsy for a reason?? cos it's seeming a bit creepy now from my end. And yeah... I'm sure you know much much more about coaching than Wallsy... But seriously... if you wanted to make a point.. you should have posted a picture of Tony Shaw...... and unfortunately 76'Woodenspooners is onto me about being civil and rising above the trolls at the moment.. so I guess you won't get to see the picture of a big red door knob I wanted to show you.

Its a joke, Wallsy's line was always to throw the tall into the ruck...

Quite a few have commented on the holding and the umpiring and Cloke probably deserved a couple of frees. Last season he probably would have been awarded. But as we now see the new rule this year allowing more jostling and use of strength in marking contests is far from beneficial to Cloke, contrary to what some initially may have thought.

The new rule has simply allowed a defender or multiple defenders to grab and hold Cloke even more than they were doing last season. If it continues to be interpreted as it has been in Rounds 1 -3 then we could see many more frustrating plays and no-calls involving Cloke. As some have already suggested he'll need to change tactics, use his endurance, and get on the lead as much as possible.

Except that when Cloke touches the opponents the umpires are usually suddenly razor sharp.

Tbh the only bad umpiring regarding Cloke was in the 4th quarter where he was clearly being held on.

On the topic of shit umpiring.... how the **** was that not a foul against Carroll? Aghhhhh
