Tredrea To Discuss Giving Up Captaincy

I like the thought of Chad getting the Captaincy he is a natural leader and inspires with his play. He is the only player on our list that would have taken that mark running back with the flight of the ball over Fevola a few weeks back and he was half fit when he did it. I'm not saying we don't have any courageous players but he is the only one capable of that effort. However, there is nothing worse than a reluctant skipper so if he has to be coerced in any way shape or form I'd say no.

I would like to see the club go a little bit left field and give it to Boak, Carlisle or not so left field, Chaplin. Give it to a kid and let them grow into the role with a growing side.

Just my thoughts.

I think it is very hard to captain from full back or full forward so I would not make it Carlile, even though i really rate him. Chaplin would be a good choice (some say his form has been scratchy though), Boak would be perfect if he was 2 years older.

I would go for Salopek, I like the idea of a long term captain and there are no older guys who absolutely command it. Sal is very tough and very skillful, his place in the team is in absolutely no doubt and he is a real leader IMO.

Great points and I love Sal as much as the next bloke (in a very manly hetero way) I just have that little niggling doubt in the back of my mind about him getting on the park every week but 100% fit a great choice as skipper.

At the moment there is simply nobody in our side that I would be comfortable giving the captaincy to. Tredrea should keep it by default.
Apart from Chad, Tredders is your clubs only real leader. I rate Tredders as one of the leagues best.

I know many of you would scoff, but I have a friend playing at Centrals and he felt that Symes was a good leader on and off the field and thought if he could get in your 22 would of been a candidate. He was one of the few that stood up in extreme adversity in the GF too (as did Tredders). Good Captains do that. Wont be a candidate at Crows as VB or Scott "Donuts" Thompson should get it after "Punter" Goodwin.

As an outsider's opinion (and unless your in the team we all are) the only younger player would be Salopek. He puts his body on the line each week and from what you see on the field tends to be one to rally the players at times. And he seems to love the club.

Tom Harley?

SNIP..

brogan, the agitator, the guy the opposition fans love to hate, the guy who starts it all - skillfully & physically - from the centre square & then drops back to put his body on the line, is my choice for interim captain :D

Interesting parallel here at Cronulla, my NRL team. They changed captains this year to work on the previous guy's form, and they picked as replacement the player everyone loves to hate (it's apparently official - according to the latest newspaper poll - he is the most hated man on the field as rated by other players). Naturally the guy gets in there boots and all every week and from being also rans last year the team is now equal second ..

Personally I love to see the captain lead from the front in good times and bad. Hasn't been a lot of that this year...

A fellow Port supporter suggested that Shaun be made captain as a way of snapping him out of his apparent "couldn't give a dang" mindset. Personally I don't think it is a good idea. I know it is a gross generalisation but indigenous players don't seem to be outgoing enough to cope with being the club captain.

Terrible idea imo

Giving captaincy to certain players is a good thing and can have a huge positive impact on their play.. however it's sending a terrible message to the players if a lazy player gets the captaincy.

the above situation is only good when a committed player needs to play with more responsibilty.. not when a lazy player needs to play with more responsibilty

we are struggling for crowd numbers, and could do with alot more supporters. For this reason, we should go for a captain that is generally well liked and respected within the football community.

Chad cornes is respected for his football abilities, but not as a person. He is a great on field leader but i wouldn't want him as captain.

I'm after someone who is tough, but fair, respected, and a solid player.

Wilbur would be ideal but he's aging. Lade would be another, and again he is aging.

Unfortunately nobody fits the bill.

Kane Cornes comes closest. Chaplin depending on how he goes as a player next season. Imo he's at the cross roads.. can go either way. If Chaplin does well next season and becomes a 10 year player at the club, then he would be ideal.

I'm not sure if he's liked much, but he's not disliked..Give it to Tredders for one more year, whilst grooming Chaplin.

For some reason, i'd prefer the captain to be a big bodied player. Doesn't have to be tall, but a strong big body.

To all those accusing Tredders of not leading from the front this year or 'only concentrating on his own game', perhaps he'd have a greater impact if he wasn't actually being forced to sacrifice his own game by loitering on a flank so we can continue to have the shortest key forward pairing in history?

Last minute of the Richmond game. Motlop starts in the goalsquare. Ebert starts at CHF. Tredders and Hoff are stuck on flanks.

His much-maligned North game. Motlop out of the square all night. Ebert as roaming CHF. Tredders marooned at RHF/W.

OMG WHY ISN'T HE HAVING AN IMPACT?!?!?!

Honestly. We could have Wayne Carey circa 1993 wearing the #1 and he'd struggle to impart himself as an exiled decoy for the equivalent of Adrian McAdam and Brett Allison.

CAN'T HE AT LEAST BE SEEN TO BE YELLING ON TV LIKE BROGES?!?!?!

Uh-huh.

I can't say I have seen either of those games but by the sounds of it Tredders is playing the Anthony Ingerson role. As an example Ingo would play CHF as wide as possible (almost into the crowd) just so Glenn Jakovich would be kept out of the play.

Problem with this is Tredrea>Ingerson and Jakovich>CHB from either of those teams.

The structure needs to change otherwise having Tredders is just a waste.

it's stupid how ppl always give captaincy to the best player. best player and captaincy are completely unrelated
Was going to say the same, Bickley was a good captain for the crows, but would not off been in their top 5 players.
As for Chad, same age as Tredders, bad year with injury, big risk IMO.

Tredders is a champ, love to see him finish off in his last few seasons concentrating on his own game without the responsibility of being skipper.
Chappy will be a future captain, but not yet, so maybe Kane or Broags.

I would've thought Motlop would be the most likely candidate. He's currently enjoying his least-injured streak of football in his career.
Sorry but I would strongly disagree.
He isnt worthy enough of being a captain..

Did you see him on the weekend screaming at Salopek to not pass it off and give it to him??

Well Salopek did the right thing.

Salopek Captain.... anyone??

Just get rid of that yellow mouth gard and you'll be right:thumbsu:

Did you see Motlop sitting in the dugout througout the game when he would go off to rest, and his body language and encouragement to other players as they came off, or were sitting on the bench ..... very impressive.

PS - Salopek DID do the right thing, and Im not advocating Motlop for captain, but I wanted to point out that blowing one incident out of proportion isn't always a way of portraying the truth.

Yes I did see that..

That doesnt make a difference.
I still think he shouldnt even have 1% chance.

As I've said elsewhere Salopek would make a good skipper IMO. He puts his body on the line. Is acquiring an air of authority on the field, is skilled, produces in big games and is a good media performer. I'm not saying there aren't some other good candidates but he's one that should warrant serious consideration. One slight problem is that he gets banged around and misses a few games, that would be my only hesitation with him.

Perhaps we should pick Lonie then, he doesnt get banged up anywhere near as much.

My main hesitation about Salopek as captain is that I still think he is horribly overrated. He racks up possessions, but the majority of them don't seem to do much - they're like Kane's possessions.

Salopek put the footy onto the chest of leading forwards with 40 metre passes 3 times in the Showdown and it wouldn't even rate as one of his more damaging games. His footskills are elite but there's only so damaging you can be with your touches playing the receiver/linkman role that he currently plays - it's up to the coach to give him an opportunity to work his magic in the guts.
