He played in a final

He might be, but he isn't at the moment.

There's one thing that they've all done, that Cotchin hasn't atm, and can't even be in the discussion as the best player in the league until he does.

Thats winning big games, finals and grand finals for their teams deep in September.

You all dismiss the likes of Bartel, Cox, Selwood etc as the best players in the league.

Give me the blokes with ice in their veins during finals like the above every day of the week.

And thats not taking into account Pendles, Judd, Franklin and Ablett who regularly DOMINATE these types of games..

To the contrary, you could argue that the players you've mentioned have had their reputations disproportionally increased in a way that Cotchin has not - he has done it week in and week out in a battling team, far different to Bartel/Selwood for example who have had every opportunity to get the recognition they deserve.

Luke Hodge's superstardom has almost been granted due to one brilliant GF - Cotchin is already a better player than Hodge ever has been IMO, but on your theory he is behind even Hodge.

It is completely unfair to dismiss players purely due to lack of finals success - if he failed in those games thats different, but he hasn't.

I never rated Hodge as a better player.

It's a combination of both finals and consistency

All the best players do it week in and week out, they're the best players in the competition for that exact reason.

But when your ranking the very best you have to seperate them, and it's finals and big games where this seperation occurs.

Can you honestly compare Cotchin beating up on the Bulldogs on the weekend to what Franklin pulled out against Collingwood in the prelim last year?

They aren't even in the same universe atm.

I'm not denying he isn't a gun of the competition, because he is, but to be ranked the very best player of the competition, you have to have done it consistently in finals to obtain that title.

Did i mention that comparison?

Are you deliberately thick?

I made the comparison

What if he won 3 Brownlows and never played in a final. How would you judge him?

There's a pretty bloody close example of how he would be judged, don't you think?

well... we are not going to turn the focus on another side are we?

but in all seriousness, the maker of this thread has left me rather embarrassed
I agree in part as its always a bit of a cringe when people start a post pumping his team, but in fairness to SG, apart from the stupid title, what was wrong with what he actually said?

yeah agreed Bazzar, just could not get past the title... that did it for me.

I would have preferred: 'Will Trent Cotchin become the best midfielder in the AFL?'

why hasnt this crap been moved to the Richmond board?

Laughably biased thread

Hmm. I've got a new 'experiment' for Melbourne to use on the weekend...

Put Casey Scorpions in the AFL and Melbourne Demons in the VFL for this round, and your chances of winning the AFL game would improve remarkably.

AFL Coaches votes up to round 20, Id say the coaches opinions are our best guide to who is the best player in the comp for the current season to date..

Round 20 Leaderboard

93 Trent Cotchin (Rich)
88 Jobe Watson (Ess)
83 Dayne Beams (Coll)
78 Gary Ablett (GC)
74 Matthew Boyd (WB)
74 Patrick Dangerfield (Adel)
74 Scott Thompson (Adel)
73 Scott Pendlebury (Coll)
63 Brett Deledio (Rich)
63 Josh Kennedy (Syd)

well well, look what we have here.. muwahahahhaah... :D

Where have I (and apart from the op, the majority of Richmond posters here) said he is the best in the comp?

Not you specifically mate, but to be fair we have now got a thread that has run 17 pages based on that rather ridiculous notion.

We'll give him an encouragement award then. Do it for 3 or 4 seasons...you don't become the best player in the league after 1 good year, especially when your team misses the finals again. Easier to stand out in a poor (or extremely poor) side.

But, but...BigFooty doesn't agree with coaches votes, because what would an AFL coach know anyway.

You do understand that good players in weak teams are likely to get an unreasonable share of the overall votes.

You do understand that Trent Cotchin is a good player in a weak team.

You also understand that you are also more likely to get more votes if you are not injured and play more games.

Oh, you don't understand these things?

based on this... if cotchin was in collingwood's team, would he be considered bad?

Thread should be titled 'Trent Cotchin will be the best player in the AFL'. He would be top 10 pushing top 5 right now, and hes only 22.

Not at all but he would be sharing his votes with a number of players and would not vote as well. Of course this is somewhat mitigated by the fact that Collingwood players will poll more votes.

In any case, using the coaches votes as the indicator of greatness is laughable.
