Trent Cotchin is the best player in the AFL

No what you said was that Hodge's reputation is largely based on his one grand final performance. Then you said that Cotchin was clearly superior. Hodge has been a great player for a decade. Cotchin has been a very good player for 6 months. Hodge was a great player before he won his Norm Smith Medal, not because of it.

Would you like me to requote your post?

I said his superstardom was due to one game, which it was. He has never been a "superstar" in terms of playing ability.

Cotchin this year has been superior to any of Hodge's best years IMO. Plus he was excellent last year. Again, no knock on Hodge.

Hodge has not been a "great" player for a decade - he was slow to start when drafted, had a few very good seasons as an A grader (rather than elite), and injuries since.

You do understand that good players in weak teams are likely to get an unreasonable share of the overall votes.

You do understand that Trent Cotchin is a good player in a weak team.

You also understand that you are also more likely to get more votes if you are not injured and play more games.

Oh, you don't understand these things?
A good way to test this theory would be to take a good player from a very good team, put him in a very bad team, and see what happens.

Funnily enough, this scenario played out with Gary Ablett, Jr. moving from Geelong in 2010 to Gold Coast in 2011. According to the theory, we should see a significant rise in votes, awards, etc, for Ablett in 2011, as there were suddenly far fewer good players to take votes away from him.

So what happened? Ablett scored 70 votes in 2010 for the Coaches Association Award, compared to 80 votes in 2011, a small but notable rise. In Brownlow terms, though, he polled 26 votes in 2010 and 23 votes in 2011, a small decline. He was All-Australian both years, vice-captain in 2010 and captain in 2011. He was third both years in the Most Valuable Player award, but much further from the winner in 2011 than he was in 2010, dropping from 562 votes to 389.

Draw from this what you will, but if this is what happens when the best player in the comp shifts from a Grand Finalist to the wooden spooner, then any "vote-crowding" effect seems to be pretty negligible.

"He is similar to Chris Judd that way in that he can get out of traffic where other players would just crumble in the tackle. We're very lucky to have him at our footy club, he is certainly going to be a better player considering he is only 22 years of age," Hardwick said.

When he is compared to greats, he must be a descent player! :)

He has had a great season and I reckon he will only get better!

I think the concept of vote stealing is a bit of a myth.Voss, Akermanis and Black all won with each other in their team. Bartel and Ablett won playin alongside eachother, as well as the likes of Selwood, Chapman, Corey and Kelly. Swan was probably playing with the best midfield in he comp last year. In fact, if you look back, most winners played in a good midfield. Having good players around you makes you a better player.

I never rated Hodge as a better player.

It's a combination of both finals and consistency

All the best players do it week in and week out, they're the best players in the competition for that exact reason.

But when your ranking the very best you have to seperate them, and it's finals and big games where this seperation occurs.

Can you honestly compare Cotchin beating up on the Bulldogs on the weekend to what Franklin pulled out against Collingwood in the prelim last year?

They aren't even in the same universe atm.

I'm not denying he isn't a gun of the competition, because he is, but to be ranked the very best player of the competition, you have to have done it consistently in finals to obtain that title.

so if richmond never make the finals again cotchin can never be considered the very best player?

Wow, Pendles would have this award sewn up already if he didn't miss six matches.
