Murphy is a little bit different. He is a taller player, super courageous who the club also considered a first round pick. Ryan may eventually make the grade, but the club did no favours to supporters' likely assessments of him by playing him long before he was ready.

You missed my point. Although Murphy was greeted with hysteria by BF initially, many of the experts turned against him and said he wouldnt make it. And by that stage, he was a lot older than what Ryan is now.

As for your point about playing Ryan, I agree. It was a curious move. I thought Ruscoe would have been the better bet but maybe the club sees no future in him for whatever reason. As for the supporters trashing Ryan because of his underwhelming performance in his one game, I dont think anyone would be surprised. This is the land of knee-jerk reactions...

I agree. But currently we are very much lacking in quality playing depth and Ruscoe would have been a far better choice than Ryan for a role in defence. The bottom drawer players are always going to have question marks hanging over them, but Ruscoe at least looks the part on an AFL field, unlike 'don't let me get caught in the headlights, I'll freeze up and hand the ball to the opposition' types like Ryan.
How the hell can you say that about Ryan he got knocked out in his 1st match aged 18, a bit of slack would be nice. I do not think anyone can make any predictions on such a small sample size, this is really shooting from the hip,he may well turn out like you predict but god he must be given a go first.

Andrew McLeod had 4 possessions in his first game, and he played the entire match. Jonathan brown had 0 possessions and 1 tackle.

Ryan just looked overawed by the occasion. I don't think you can take anything about how ready his game is. The only way you can find out if they are going to control their nerves is to throw them into that situation.

i agree with that but the club doesnt have the prime goal of developing young men...although could think otherwise. I didnt think it was a good time to play him because he played well in the VFL earlier in the year and he drifted off a bit.

But my point wasnt about playing him, it was about assessing him when he's an inexperienced skinny kid. And people will continue to do that, but I've had my say...

OK so like Ryan neither of them were ready to play when first given a game. My comments relate to depth players able to step into the side this year, and we just don't have them available (McInnes, Carmichael or Johnson) or they are not ready, like Ryan.

Before he was knocked out he gave the ball up to the opposition three times while under almost no pressure which resulted in 2 goals. Getting injured was a blessing in disguise because otherwise he would have been subbed anyway.

A concussion is a blessing in disguise??

Not really but he wouldn't have remained on the ground much longer if he hadn't been concussed. I think the majority of us agreed at the time that he was played prematurely. There were better credentialed players available. Let's hope there are no controversial selection errors revealed in tonight's game.

well the others mightnt agree but i think our so-called depth players are pretty limited. With John Noble being dropped, I would say that he's an unofficial depth player as is Billy Frampton and the player that Nick replaces is the other.

Maybe he will be a star next start....put him in to the prelim. He might shoot the lights out as we basketball fans say...

He may well have been subbed out and I agree he was unready but surely you cut him a bit of slack, how many times do you think he has played in front of 70 to 75,000 thousand people not many I think.

A little bit of perspective is needed here not the noose.

Ps as someone said a head injury is not a blessing to either one of ours or the opposition even more so a bloke in his 1st game, but lets have no rows now we have Dees to cook 1st and then we can discuss it later when we have won.

None of Richards, Draper, Kelly, Wilson, Murley, Macrae have performed at the same level as Ruscoe this year.

Happy to disagree on Kelly, Wilson and Macrae. All 3 have had as good a season as Ruscoe, Wilson and Macrae arguably better despite Macrae’s early season injury issues he still made the VFL team of the year squad, the only Collingwood player to do so. Draper and Richards have had injury interrupted seasons so not sure you’re comparing oranges with oranges including them. Richards is contracted so he’s going nowhere anyway.

I don't know off the top of my head. I will have to research it. All I know is that if we lose a couple of tall or midfield players, we are in a spot of bother.

Same applies equally to every team. The one exception likely Melbourne needing to replace Gawn as they have Grundy.

Played well enough in the second half on ANZAC day to warrant another game. Thought it may have come when Howe went down, but unfortunately didn’t get that chance. Hopefully someone else gives him a spot next year.
