When any team is near the bottom of the ladder, their defenders are the first that supporters vent their frustration to..

IMO that's the main reason Port fans don't rate him.

I didn't hear them complaining about him when the team made a Grand Final a few years ago.

Yep you're right, in 2007 we were talking about his potential.
Unfortunately we were still talking about his potential in 2012.

Potential or not, his level as a 21yo didn't attract criticism.

Criticism only came after the team played terrible football and he was the one standing on the mark a lot of the time while the opposition piled on the goals.

I also wouldn't discount the fact that some players find it hard to throw their body and soul into every game when the team is losing every week by big margins. A lot of players stop doing the small things and preserve their body instead.

Would Port fans say that could be a good explanation? Chaplin is playing better because he's in a position to play in finals and in big games where he throws himself in a bit harder than he would in a Round 15 nothing game in front of 15,000? (With all due respect - you're a good team this year anyway)

Port did smash as though, but I believe we belted Richmond earlier on this year ;)
And we belted Port on their home turf which u couldn't, see what im doing here ;)

Seriously this thread pretty much has come to its end, Port happy, Richmond Happy whats the problem?
Lock it up lets all move on....

Now wrt the zillion Richmond or North Melbourne are going to win the next 500 premiership threads
Use the search engine and prove otherwise.

Really:rolleyes: please show us where Richmond or north supporters were stating that we would win the next 500 premierships, ahh u were joking not really true, well in that case carry on with ur nonsense....

He's been nothing but a gun for us

Guess he was surrounded by useless spuds in the Port backline
How do you explain our defence improving from 14th to 3rd as soon as Chaplin was taken out of that useless spud backline then?

The only team Chaplin improves is one consisting of chicken salt and vinegar.

Clearly he did not want to play in the shithole that is Adelaide

Do u think it was totally ur backline improving by chaps going out, me thinks the ball doesnt get bombed in as much as before cause u have a very good midfield and this year has really clicked and this means retaining more of the ball, give ur midfield some credit, even the best back lines can be scored heavily against when the ball is being pumped in countless times....

So he lacks ticker now as well?

The extra $150,000 or so a year probably helps motivate him now too. At least you know who to blame now when Riewoldt and/or Martin leave

So if that's the case then you would agree that your improvement in scores against also cannot be solely attributed to one player, but to your team improvement as a whole?

I'm beginning to think you were one of the douche's he refused to talk to at Westlakes shopping centre.

and no they aren't leaving Richmond at all.

Absolutely the whole team working as a cohesive unit but for Richmond we seriously needed a big body to take on the big forwards, this has helped the back line in scores against by having Chaplin not the main reason but has helped our backline structures, i would say more our pressure around the ground, better structures, midfield retaining more of the ball etc put these all together and sure i would agree that improvement in these areas helps the defence big time....

oh dear, your record against teams in the top 8 is very poor, you will be making up the numbers in the finals, nothing more, you are just a consistently average team at best, alot like chaplin really. until you can beat a top team no one will rate you as a realistic threat for the gf. in current form i would be very confident port will demolish you like we did to sydney and collingwood.

1. Hawthorn - Haven't played them yet
2. Geelong - LOST to them by 44 points
3. Fremantle - LOST to them by 1 point * richmonds best effort of the year against a quality side
4. Essendon - LOST to them by 29 points
5. Sydney - Haven't played them yet
6. Collingwood - LOST to them by 34 points
7. Port Adelaide - WON by 41 points

and when you beat port we were playing rubbish footy, we lost to the dogs with that form

Unbelievable luck at Tigerland, should be bottom four but every team we run into is fortunately for us playing rubbish football, our win against Port at their home ground was against a team playing rubbish so doesn't count, well spotted:rolleyes:

I actually think its because we're turning the ball over less trying to get the ball out of defensive 50, and Chaplin's turnovers not being there anymore plays a big part. Richmond seems to have fixed it by putting him in a position to get the ball less though.

The more your comments lean to the absurd the more we know the pain you are in at losing one of the most efficient backmen in the comp, I feel for you:(

mmm, let me think if we wanted him to get the ball less wouldn't we not play him at all, no I think we use him so that his accurate disposal running off the half back line now helps us register on the score board.

For a player that no one at Port wants you lot do spend a lot of time trying to convince us how bad he is, I'm surprised we and the football world haven't noticed it ourselves yet?

After reading 4 pages, I get a feeling this will keep going in circles until
A) A majority of Richmond supporters admit that he sucked at Port and they were right in letting him walk
or
B) A majority of Port supporters admit they should have kept Chaplin
or
C) Richmond fall out of the finals

It's beautiful isn't it :)

Chaplin is fitting in nicely with a well balanced team. Its hard to be overly excited when you have had a lot of disappointments but i am really enjoying watching us play and congratulate our recruiters on holding our draft picks and picking up some fine footballers from other clubs. Coaches Hardwick and Choco are pretty handy too ... guess we should be thanking Port for them too ^^

I will delight in every win ... one game at a time .... for the players and officials this is a ruse to keep the club focused but for we supporters one game at a time is all we have ... someone will win the last game of the season but in the mean time there are lots of other games which can be fought and won so we can strut around our offices and worksites bullshirting to our friends about our victories or the questionable umpiring ...

Go tiges ^^

Like us, you've gone too long without success. It's good to see the Tiges playing well.

I think that is absolutely a major reason. There is no doubt Port was a toxic environment for a while there. His heart wasn't in it. Like Pearce he wanted to leave. The club decided not to pursue him because we knew that for us to get back to playing good football, we needed a team that was committed to the cause. I don't blame him at all for wanting out, but at the same time if he'd given up on the club it was best he moved on.

Both of our clubs win. There is no point fighting about it. Both clubs are playing their best footy in probably a decade.
