Who sits couped up at home?

Local companies, serving local people is a better form of capitalism than multi nationals who don't pay their way.

Sounds better than traipsing into town on shit public transport to sit behind a desk before traipsing home.

You live in a different world to me if you think people are all chatting and making friends on the train.

You need to move back to the Shire.

And those that haven't?

My brother and dad were both out of work for fifteen years. Are they a lesser people?

what now?

I was commenting on the way society treats older retirees like they’re a burden on society when in fact generations of people paying taxes and supporting businesses are what builds countries (at least from a economic pov which was the context)

I’m really not sure how that is negative commentary on people who have struggled to find work for whatever reason for a period of time.

Why are people so scared of actually letting the things they believe in run wild? Capitalism and the market shaping itself?

No, keep the artificial lifestyle constructs and outdated structures of society in place.

It seems those most against socialism or communism are the ones most in to controlling the lives of the masses, which kinda doesn't make sense.

I know but it sounded like if you haven't worked ALL your life despite making effort to find it you shouldn't be treated as royalty.

nah it’s about recognising that those that have worked and paid taxes contributed a large amount to the economic viability of this country and have helped build the infrastructure that people and businesses take advantage of today.

the whole advantage of having a society is that your Dad may have come across a hard time at some point but his contribution and his families contribution over years means that we can pay a little of that back at times when they need it. The idea that these are handouts even when the vast majority of people contribute far more in an economic sense than they take out is pure drivel designed to make people feel shame.

Lol

my missus has been working from home for 2 months now. The majority of her workplace (Hundreds of staff) went out of the office and things went way better than expected. Their work basically requires no in office stuff it’s just the convenience of having them in the same building. Managers galore have been vocal about praising how well it’s worked and how happy everyone is with the balance. Lots of talk about how unnecessary it would be to go back and they won’t go back to 5 days a week in the office.

next minute

Scott Morrison says things can start returning to normal and the head honcho tells everyone they will be required to return to 5 days a week in office.

What brain dead ******* morons. They’ve shown we can progress from an outdated useless construct of having masses of people travelling 2hrs of the day to spend 8+hrs in a cubicle but they insist on returning to it.

Gotta get the machine back to normal didn't ya hear..... all that money we have to make up for now, naughty society......

The companies that keep that kind of stuff going or offer it will be the ones that succeed, the kids leaving uni today will see those companies as progressive, the ones that don't will cease to exist, it's no different to online shopping, if you don't offer both and embrace it your store is dead.....

Also, if people aren't travelling to work, they are not buying petrol, stopping at shops etc..... it's all about money, greed and power, taxes etc.... what this whole shit show has shown us is we are being led by numbies who have their back pockets lined to keep the world exactly the way it is.....

Exhibit A -

We have no say in the matter really....

Absolutely. Also my great grandparents made pretty well out of their time which cushioned the blow hugely and were amazing generous people to all around them. Swings and roundabouts.

But my dad also got a house that was a couple years wages so was able to have it under control before tough times. A home that was able to house a family in some level of comfort. That wouldn't be possible in today's climate.

Companies that rely on people actually going to an office instead of working from home:

Power companies (electricity for office)
Landlords/banks (rent/mortgage for office)
Oil/petrol companies (transport to office)
Cafes (lunch/coffee at office)
Service companies (electricians/plumbers etc to fix things that are going wrong at office)
Local councils (council rates for office)
Infrastructure maintenance (road and rail use)
Telephone companies (communications for office)

That's just to name a few. Reduce the income of all those businesses by 50% and see how it affects the rest of the economy.

Not to mention that its far cheaper for a business to pay for one plan of unlimited internet data than have all their workers spread out.

You go back to work because that's how the issue with unemployment gets solved - through more demand (which has always been artificial - all the things that weren't deemed essential are literally the things we don't actually need to survive).

The only thing that this has proven is that some people can still work from home when they are sick with a cold or the flu, so there's no reason for you to go into an office and spread your germs everywhere.

On your last point: My old work believes if you are alive in any capacity you are at work, they were not allowed to work from home during the recent period, and if you have a cold you show up to work, it's the 1950's, many companies are like it, the young people they employ - i.e the next generation leave, that business is slowly dying a slow death because of their old world attitude.

Apart from cafe's above most office workers can do their job remotely, and lots have during this period and it's has actually worked - and I would argue it's the bigger companies (not my old work - small/family) who seem more willing to do it, probably as they have the clout to do it.

It made me think if we started a new society today how would we build it, would we centralize work as we have always done or kind of go back to more 'Corner Shop approach with business spread out'.

I was just listening to Vice City ads the other day. So dumb but so funny.

But I'm not married!
You are now... to America!

People need to get back out in the world. Doing everything from home including work only increases social isolation. I think this is a very dangerous path to go down.

Oh and Phil, get off the angry pills mate and also stop obsessing about what your Dad did in 1985.

There's plenty of middle ground between becoming a social hermit and spending 40 hours a week cooped up in an office.
