lol it's a bit of a roll of the dice. I always try to make sure i'm ontop of whatever i'm claiming which are linked to income thresholds. Stuff like child care subsidies, private health rebates etc. They give you discounts during the year based on expected FY income. If you creep over the brackets that are set you'll get a bill for sure.

The Medicare thing plus losing the lamington bit me in the arse.

Bravey: Everything should be free and provided by the government.
Also Bravey: WTF? I have to pay tax. * you campaigners!!
I don't take it as him complaining about tax, more complaining that the changes were handled poorly which is giving people some tax deficit shocks in a pretty rough period.

Everything being provided by low and middle income earners is a bit wtf.

They are also the biggest users of it, so depends what view you take. I.e richer should provide for poorer or poorer should band their resources together and fund themselves.

I personally don't mind paying a big flat amount of taxes but I don't like the fact it goes to bloated ****ing government agencies who don't spend it wisely, meaning less benefit gets realised down the line for the "consumer".

Taxes are fine, what isnt is the amount of absolute ****ing waste.

If the poor were to band resources and fund themselves that would be fine.

But that isn't possible, for their resources will also go toward funding the wealthy.

Medicare funds rich doctors but it also provides a ****tonne of health care. Comparitively the rich also provide alot more flat $ to the government than low income workers do.

The tax percentage is probably the biggest issue. I.e rich should pay higher % than low income but that also doesn't really promote entrepenuerialism if the more you earn the harder you get ****ed.

Its easy to say well a rich person wont miss that Veyron, and they probably wont, but people are also entitled to spend (or earn) how they want so long as its lawful.

Either way someone always gets ****ed. As I said my biggest concern is the waste, we accumulate an insane amount from tax and what we actually realise as genuine benefits to society is increasingly razor thin because of how poorly its managed.

The rich will always say lol screw the poor, while the poor will always say screw the rich. We could alternatively just **** everyone equally and have universal income lol.

Christ we've been through this before. If I pay myself $180k, I pay nearly $52,000 in income tax. Someone earning $52,000 pays virtually no income tax.
Except most absolutely do. Your idea that every single middle class person is using and exploiting every single tax policy they can just isn't accurate. It's ridiculous. It's like assuming you pay no tax because you write that 50k off to your investment property.

That much is obvious but i think the arguement is that someone on 52k misses 8k of tax more than someone earning 180k misses 16k or whatever. Which is usually true(ish). But the more you earn the more you tend to spend and therefore the more you need to maintain your lifestyle.

There is arguments on all sides. Hence why we never see any transformational reform.

And what’s your point?

Look I am conflicted. I believe a person has a right to keep half of what they earn/generate... But not everything a person has is really earnt.

Yes.

Lower employment and small business related income taxes (including for high earners), hike CGT, scrap negative gearing. If you earn money by working for it, you should get to keep more of it. If you 'earn' money just by having capital, you can pay up.

Scrap stamp duty for owner-occupiers and massively increase it for property investors.

Nice idea in theory but impossible to police in practice, you could just buy a house as an 'owner occupier' and then move out three months later. I know people who did that with the first home owner grant.

Increasing land tax for investors on the other hand ...

Can’t be that hard to close that loophole surely.

yeah but in the highlighted scenario you know which one it's ALWAYS gonna be, right? that's the thing, unless we're talking french revolution here, the balance of power is completely lopsided. the rich get to bend over the poor routinely. the poor only get to dream about returning the favour.

In others things...

Weird to think that if the water was clear, you'd be able to see the Titanic quite easily from the surface. 14,000 feet underwater has been made to be this incredible distance recently, and it is, but mostly for the underwater context. On its own it is not something the naked eye struggles with. I used to skydive from that distance and I could make out local landmarks in freefall. The boat would be a bit bigger than my house or the footy oval.
