Best thing about Southwark that I remember growing up is that it's name wasn't pronounced as it looked. Seemed a bit sophisticated to us working class lads in the west even if it tasted like sickly sweet shite.

From what I remember that VB stuff was even sweeter still . Haven't had one for a decade or more.

Sad to say it given their Norwood/Crows allegiance but Coopers was the company that brought some respectability to the SA beer scene.

Dad did drink the odd Southwark bitter, but was mainly a Coopers Ale and Coopers stout man.

Mum would occasionally drink stout and lemonade - your Porter Gaff's.

When I started drinking beer more regularly in mid to late teens, the main drop for the majority was West End draught.


In the past 20 years, beer brand availability has just exploded akin to nuclear proportions. So many to chose from nowadays you get dizzy!

And imho that choice is one of the main reasons why over the counter beer prices have skyrocketed over the past decade or two. Having to deal with multiple suppliers instead of bulk discount deals with the one brewery in town to supply all their kegs.

It's because of taxes Craft beer suppliers are often cheaper by the keg because they offer us freebies/plus one deals just to get on tap or in the fridge

Is it? The twice yearly increase in excise taxes on beer and spirits are linked to the CPI but the prices in hotels have gone up exponentially and multiple times the rate of inflation. Although I guess Council rates etc. have to come into the mix too.

Scumbag landlords jacking up rent, covering penalty rates (why a Sunday surcharge is the norm) and taxes. Competition in beer probably drives prices down if anything. In any case most taps in most pubs if they have a 'craft' option is just from a brewery bought out by CUB or Lion anyway

Sad to hear that a South Australian has died after being hit by the boom on the vessel Bowline while competing in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Another person on board was evacuated with a shoulder injury.

Bowline is owned and skippered by Adelaide barrister Ian Roberts who is a mad keen Port Adelaide fan.

He wasn't hit by the boom as initially reported but was hit by the mainsheet, which is attached to the boom, and was thrown across the cockpit hitting his head on a winch. Very sad and can only hope that death was instantaneous.

Another RSAYS sailor, Andrew McLeod, was hit by the boom and died during a Port Lincoln Week race in February 2023.

Christies Sailing Club sailor, and Sydney Hobart veteran, John "Fish" Fisher was knocked overboard by the boom in the Southern Ocean during the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race and was never found.
