Under Age U16s - 2026 AFL Draft General Discussion

The last U15’s boys championships for a primarily pre Tasmania crop ever.

Next year, it’s time to zero in on potential Tassie targets.

Though, there might be a few 19 year olds in 2027 who’ll be signed up.

Thank you Haggas.

Just getting names out there gives us a foundation for what to expect in each draft.

Who cares if it's a star studded draft crop or a crap one beforehand.

How each player's career progresses and develops will allow us to adequately rate, grade and examine each draft.

For instance, this year has started seeing the depth in 2016 and 2017 showing while 2020 and, to a lesser extent, 2021, are to be assessed independent of the others because of the shutdowns.

Bit of a waffle but that's my thoughts.

Yeah only just got into making my own mock drafts for AFL fantasy

Cameron is 2008 born. he's well off the pace of others from that age group though and hasn't grown in 3 years.

2009 kids you have probably picked the eyes out of the best QLD ones.

Taj Murray the standout 2009 born player and Lachlan Ellen is pretty handy, very physical but he can't kick and just roosts it as far as he can from what I've seen. But we're talking about a 14 yr old kid here!

Boothey is a monster with unlimited potential. The other one in that age group that is very handy is a lad called Addison Stolz, left foot mid/fwd who is a serious athlete.

Hugh Taylor is also 2009 born, not 2008. Swans academy kid, elite cricketer also

WA list looks pretty accurate. There’s a few boys that were stand outs in trials that missed the squad due to injuries or pre-planned holidays that would be interesting to see at a higher level also

Lucas Mannion and Liam Deckert are two that probably would have been in the squad

I've been preparing an early list for WA in the usual style as every yearly list. I think I've got the correct WAFL club assigned to each?

Early days of course. Just getting some names out there plus a couple who I assume are below age = ***. I'm sure other can add some more names.

Perth Jayden Clarke (P/PSA) - - ---- - Matthew Edgelow (P) - - ---- - Garrison Kenh (P) - - ---- - Alastair Kelly (P) - - ---- - Zack Hately (P/PSA) - - ---- - Tyson O'Driscoll (P) - - ---- - James Vogels (P) - - ---- - East Perth Axel Walsh (EP/PSA) - - ---- - Leo Steed (EP/PSA) - - ---- - South Fremantle Jimmy Garlett (SF) - - ---- - Peel Drew Clarke (PT) - - ---- - Austin Lekias (PT) - - ---- - Jayke Cooper (PT) - - ---- - James Whelan (PT) - - ---- - Coen Tuck (PT) - - ---- - Saul McCann (PT) - - ---- - McKenna Pringle (PT) - - ---- - Claremont Kai Bardetta (CL) - - ---- - Sonny Gosling (CL) - - ---- - Heath Mellody (CL/PSA) - - ---- - Fletcher Farr (CL/PSA) - - ---- - Lucas Robinson (CL/PSA) - - ---- - West Perth Sam Hill (WP) - - ---- - Lucas Mannion (WP) - - ---- - Koby Le Cras (WP/PSA) - - ---- - East Fremantle Cooper McMeikan (EF) - - ---- - Corbin Boylson (EF/PSA) - - ---- - Oliver Williams (EF/PSA) - - ---- - Nate Scott (EF) - - ---- - Kye Ormerod (EF) - - ---- - Josh Nathan (EF/PSA) - - ---- - Subiaco Angus Abbonizio*** (S/PSA) - - ---- - Riley Hay (S) - - ---- - Tyrell Pickett (S) - - ---- - Jai Baron-Hay (S) - - ---- - Connor Lally (S) - - ---- - Thatcher Simmons (S) - - ---- - Hurricane Clark (S) - - ---- - Adam Schmechtig (S) - - ---- - Caleb Zloich (S) - - ---- - Liam Deckert (S) - - ---- - Swan Districts Lorenze Cole (SD) - - ---- - Jai Debono (SD) - - ---- - Cooper Dudfield (SD) - - ---- -

How does it work over there?

Are they funneled to a WAFL club at that age already?

surely at 14-15 they are just playing for their local junior club, or is there a talent pathway via WAFL as early as 12-13?

Yeah the talent pathway/development squads start at 14 years of age, so yeah all of these guys have represented a WAFL club already. I'm not sure I've got all the names allocated to the correct club by zone but I reckon it's 90% right.

It's good because it get's the player familiar with his local WAFL club in a career that may last 4/5 years at development squad/futures/colts level and who knows how long at senior level if they don't get drafted.

The nine zones each have a very distinct feel/demographic about them, so it's quite tribal at colts level in particular.

I wonder if it's same for the SANFL.

I'm not sure. Probably similar. I'm not overly familiar with Adelaide but in Perth there are some of Australia's wealthiest suburbs (Most of which belong to Claremont) and some of Australia's poorest and there are also very distinctive cultural (Italian/Yugoslav/British migrant) areas.. So it's quite interesting to watch the different zones play against each other.

In WA all these guys know which club they belong to by now. I remember as a junior myself knowing full well which WAFL club zone I lived in. I recall once in a blue moon a WAFL player would visit junior club training to give a speech about how good our particular WAFL club was and how it is an honour to belong to said WAFL club.
