Under Age U17s - 2025 AFL Draft General Discussion

maybe if he is picked he could have an archie smith story of being touted and never panning out never mind his build

That's simply not going to happen. No club can contend properly for 10 years in a row, unless Geelong. Without Zorko, Rich, Daniher, Lyons, Robinson, Neale all retired or on last legs by 2026 you will go down for awhile.

Unknown father sons who have not played a game will not help you instantly.

The AFL has realised its mistakes with academies and zones with (Jamarra) an example, its influence is subtracting every year.
Stumbled upon this thread randomly but had to say your comments have aged pretty poorly. The new guys that have come or are coming through fair to say make it a pretty promising future for the Lions for 2025 and beyond. Lions have a very good record of bringing in mature ages as well to top up list and fill needs.

I believe Cooper Hodge is a 50/50 chance to choose Lions Hawks at this stage.

Cooper Hodge won't be that great of an AFL player I don't think, maybe find a role but he won't be his dad.

I know a lot can change in 12 months, but wasn't Cooper Hodge named in the U15 All Australian team last year?

*schoolboys.

There are kids that were in the team the previous year that couldn't get a start in their academy team. This year a big lad who I actually rate called Max Boothey, he made the All-Australian team after not making the QLD team! (to be honest, he deserved it too, but if it weren't for QLD hosting and putting in a 2nd team, then he wouldn't even have been at the carnival!)

Probably tells you everything you need to know about school based footy.

Best kids in QLD from 2008 are Owen (Lions), Hill (Suns) and C.Murray (Lions) who were all AA u16s via national carnival.

Other handy types are Callinan (Suns), Watts (Lions), McPherson (Lions) and then there are a couple of kids in Levi and Thompson who don't seem to be getting a start in their academy teams. Hodge is definitely up there in this next group, though McPherson would be the pick of them outside the Top 3 above.

2023 U15 AA TEAM
Victoria Navy [6]:
Darcy Harrington, Lachlan Hicks, Jack Surkitt, Mitch Toner, Cody Walker, Levi West
Western Australia [6]: Drew Clarke, Jayden Clarke, Jai Debono, Thatcher Simmons, Lucas Robinson, Kye Omerod,
Victoria White [3]: Harvie Cooke, Blake Newton, Angus Tippett
South Australia [3]: Jack Gordon, Jermaine Miller, Naite Slade
Queensland [3]: Cooper Hodge, Jackson Jarvis, Taj Murray
New South Wales [2]: Mason McGroder, Lucas Roberts
Tasmania [1]: Archie Devine
ACT [1]: Isaac Dixon

2024 U16 AA TEAM
South Australia [5]:
Douglas Cochrane, Jack Gordon, Archie Van Dyk, Ethan Herbert, Angus White
Western Australia [4]: Garrison Kenh, Lucas Robinson, Koby LeCras, Leo Steed
Vic Country [4]: Cody Walker, Marcus Prasad, Wil Malady, Tanner Armstrong
Queensland [3]: Matthew Owen (BL), Caylen Murray (BL), Archie Hill (GC)
Tasmania [3]: Charlie Bovill, Ryder Bugg, Ewan Dillon
Vic Metro [2]: Arki Butler, Tate Hodgson
New South Wales [2]: Aidan McCartney (SS), Guy Jenkin (SS)

Only three players featured in both AA teams - Cody Walker (Vic C), Lucas Robinson (WA) & Jack Gordon (SA). Also, Taj Murray featured in back-to-back U15 AA teams in 2023 & 2024. I guess it just goes to show that you can't really trust the schoolboys selectors.

Interestingly enough, Lachlan Hicks (u15 Vic Navy) was judged Metro’s best player but still didn’t make the all Australian team.

That's strange. I remember when the 2023 AA team was announced, I heard a few people saying Archie Hill was incredibly stiff to not be named and you can see he was named in the U16 AA team a year later after receiving the MVP award for the Suns' U16s team this year.

You do raise your eyebrows over some selections at times, but it's probably fair to assume Cooper Hodge received some favourable treatment when he was named in the U15 AA team last year. I know the same thing has been happening with Demons' F/S prospect Kalani White for the last few years.
