They're taking pity on you.

Maguire is on, so is the Scotland comeback.

Scotland sang the national anthem well, even the plastic Scots like McTominay and Adams. But that was it. No shots on target. Shit happens sometimes with defending but it seems to happen to Maguire more than most.

That Jude Bellingham is turning into something special.

Whilst I sort of understand Southgate's desire to defend his players (as a lot of managers will do), and whilst I understand injuries to the likes of Stones has hampered our options, Maguire is A: not playing nearly enough and B: his performances when he does play are mediocre at best.

Southgate said: "He's been an absolute stalwart for us in the second most successful England team for decades - he's been an absolutely key part of that."

I appreciate that Southgate has guided England to the latter stages of tournaments, where a lot of his predecessors have failed, but I suspect he's achieved that in spite of Maguire, not because of him. I also appreciate there is not exactly a large pool of skilled defenders to choose from, especially in light of injuries, but the likes of Stones, Dier, Dunk, Tomori, Guehi, and Mings, when they are fit, should push Maguire not only to the bench, but out of the squad completely.

On a more optimistic note, Bellingham is continuing to show why he is the future of England's national side. His pass for Kane's goal was perfect. Between the likes of him, Saka, Foden and Rice, we have some very good players, as long as Southgate unshackles them.

In the long run, it doesn't matter, we won't be winning the Euros, but a decent run with some adventurous, attacking football, and no Maguire, would be encouraging.

Whether it's completely relevant to this thread, I don't know, but if I playing Football Manager, managing a national side, I'd have some criteria for selection that I believe is at odds with Southgate's approach...

My first criteria is that I'd pick players who are actually playing. For that reason alone, Maguire (and Philips, for that matter) would not make the squad. Players who aren't playing are unlikely to be fully fit, and there is no chance to gauge their form, which brings me to criteria number two...

They need to be displaying good form. If they're consistently playing well, then they're in.

I realise injuries can limit squad selection (I'm encountering that on a nostalgic replay of Football Manager 2012), but even so, that doesn't explain the love Southgate has for Maguire.

Jude is the best player in the world he's going past Zidane at this rate.

Bellingham does remind me of Zidane with his touch on the ball and ability to glide past players. He's still a bit inconsistent, which you would expect of a young player. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders so he hopefully he can fulfil his potential.

Now that's a loyal fan club.

The party if they get a win...

Greatest moment in San Marino’s history was the time they led 1-0 against England (after 8 seconds). Lost 7-1.

Epic choke by Croatia. A few days after they had 10 points to Wales 4 and were comfortably in second. Two Welsh wins and two Croatian losses later and Wales on second on goal difference.

Going to be an epic final 2 matches for Wales and Croatia (one for Turkey).
