Shocking. Completely over-umpired, especially in the first half.

Thought it had gotten better over the past month but tonights performance was one of the worst I've seen. I don't care if they're technically there, just let the soft shit go so we can watch two teams play football.

Very frustrating.

Absolute crud, not just because I'm a Melbourne supporter. The first and second quarters were very exciting and McLaren did his best to ruin it. He has no feel for the game and if he put in that bad a performance as a player, he'd get dropped. Umpires need to be as liable as players.

Was an absolute joke. Both ways was horrible. Was the most over umpired game ive seen in a long time.

Stop paying these ridiculous nothing free kicks for touching somebody in the back and rewarding people going to ground. Its a joke and is a blight on our game

When there's no heat in the game, the umpiring quality tends to fade into the background.

There's no question that a directive was made a month or so ago from Gieschen and his cohorts, to pay less free kicks.

This has been a revelation and has resulted in more flow to a game and ultimately a better spectacle.

There was the odd poor decision in tonights game (e.g. Stanton getting pinged for holding the ball) but I thought the officiating was quite good with minor infractions left unpaid enabling contested football to generally flow unimpeded.

All good. :thumbsu:

There were 37 free kicks which is bad enough in itself. It was terribly overumpired. Then you throw in the fact that one team got more than twice as many as the other. Was one of the worst umpiring performances for the year.

I had better not see another thread about Geelong players diving for free kicks all the time after watching last nights match. 3 players in particular - Monfries, Lloyd and Robertson threw themselves to ground at every opportunity. This reiterates what i am saying that it happens in every game and not just Geelongs, but there is more focus on Geelongs games so of course ppl jump on the Geelong diving bandwagon.

I don't think Lloyd did it is just his marking action - Monfries drops his knees at every occasion though.

Umpiring essendon vs melbourne

In no way am I trying to say the umpires affected the outcome in this game, we were terrible. But this has to be the worst display of umpiring I have ever seen. 27 - 12 was it? Biggest differnce I can remember? Some shining examples included mcveigh getting pinned for too high while actually getting tackled. This must be a first. To see mclaren backslapping essendon players like he was a teammate at half time actually made me vomit. I think much like the teams playing tonight the umpires made skill errors pointing the wrong way in 50 50s. Something must be said about this. Let me reinforce I am not blaming the umpires for the loss. The umpiring was just plain awful both ways.

Re: Umpiring essendon vs melbourne

umpiring was indeed dreadful ... thought it strongly favoured essendon in the first quarter but then balanced out by half time. some free kicks there (one which saw robbo goal) just didn't make any sense.

there were a number of reckless tackles made by melbourne on night (high and in the back) but the umpiring was indeed poor. perhaps it seemed worse given the large number of skill errors and lack of intensity by both teams.

Re: Umpiring essendon vs melbourne

You actually vomited???

in any event I thought it was a dreadfully umpired game. not being patronising but i was disappointed in the number of soft free kicks we received.

probably will all turn around next week when we play the scum

Re: Umpiring essendon vs melbourne

Yep, poorest game umpired of the year so far this year. We got some cheap ones too as someone mentioned in the Robbo one, but the overall umpiring of the game was terrible. When are these fools going to realise that they are not the main feature of the game? Sam Newman and Jeff Kennett are 100% right in what they have been saying.

Re: Umpiring essendon vs melbourne

It wasn't a question of the free kicks not being there, it was just the fact the umpires were overly pedantic, particularly in the first half. More pedantic last night than any other time this season.

The free kick count was lobsided towards Essendon in the first quarter, however I've got no doubt that the umpires were making some attempt to even up the count in the second quarter towards Melbourne.

No influence on the result. Had Essendon kicked straight, particularly in the third quarter, it would of been a blowout of epic proportions.

Re: Umpiring essendon vs melbourne

From a completely unbiased perspective the umpiring was horrible last night. In no way did it affect the outcome of the match however because they were almost equally bad all round.

One thing I did have a real problem with was the amount of free goals at the start of the game Essendon got from VERY soft free kicks. Some leniency needs to be shown in the forward 50 for these little ticky ones the bald heros love to pay.

Re: Umpiring essendon vs melbourne

I was at the game but understand the radio media were commenting regarding the poor display by the umpires but Channel 7 just tend to agree with almost every decision.

There's no side that milks them better than Essendon too...

Re: Umpiring essendon vs melbourne

Anytime there's a thread about umpiring you know McLaren is gonna get mentioned....was terrible last night, inconsistent all around the ground. And if we're gonna start reporting players for what McVeigh did, the MRP is gonna be busy.

Re: Umpiring essendon vs melbourne

Yeah after half time it was better. See late in the first quarter when LLoyd was asking why he didn't get a free kick deep in the pocket, Mclaren responds "you pinned his arm in" if I'm not mistaken that is holding?
