Another example of atrocious overumpiring in the Swans v. Hawks game.

Free kick against Goodes, who shakes his finger pretty innocuously to the umpire - 50m.

What a joke!

Agreed.

The umpires have gotta get over themselves and realise that they're not part of the show. The AFL are allowing it to get this way by miking them up, etc. They should be seen and not heard and only pay free kicks for actual infringements, not because their feelings were hurt or their pride was wounded.

I disagree with this one, Goodes' gesture was totally arrogant and disrespectful and deserved a 50.

why can't the ump just walk over and have a word to him

i agree its arrogant and a little disrespectful, but a 50m penalty for shaking a finger in a contact sport seems excessive

Last night a 50 metre not paid to Essendon would have taken them into their forward line, not paid. Ball ends up in Carltons forward pocket and a free kick against Hill because the Carlton player ran into the inside of his arm. Goal to Carlton. Might not have made a difference to the end result but one day it will.
Time for the AFL to say that the game belongs to the players and the Umpires have the same place as other essential components eg Coaches, Runners and goal posts, but no more than that.

I didn't really disagree with the Goodes decision, couldn't get why the commentators were so upset about it considering I thought they were behind Hawthorn overall, he made a deliberately disrespectful gesture to the umpire, you clearly can't do that, have to cop the decision and move on.

Swans get free kick and its called advantage, Guerra tackles the player with the ball and suddenly its 50 metres? Bullshit!
You're missing a fairly critical part to that - Malceski had stopped and the umpire had blown the whistle just before Guerra tackled, so then he slung him to the ground while it was a dead ball. So it wasn't the tackle, it was the slinging to the ground after the whistle.

The only way this will be Bulls**t is if Guerra gets anything less than two weeks considering Mumford got done for less than this earlier in the year. And as for the Goodes 50. Absolutely pathetic. Hodge points yells and swears at an umpire and the only reason 50 gets paid is because a player is put on their arse behind the play yet you can't wag a finger. Joke.

According to MMM, which was my only source of 1st quarter news because some ****ing idiot had scheduled heavy roadworks for the harbour bridge for a Saturday afternoon, the Goodes 50 was a result of giving the umpire "demonstrative eyes."

**** me gently with a chainsaw.

Like rape eyes.

Why can't the umpire just ignore it and get on with umpiring the game?

Memo to umpires: You want respect? Scolding and punishing adult footballers as if they are 5 year kids is not the way to receive it.

agree with that as well

but the afl............ aaah the afl......... dont want any negativity shown towards the umps

but yeah agree with you

He had slowed and not stopped,it happened in a second and was a tough call.

According to the AFL and umpires there are no accidents, players at full speed can stop within one step and they know what other players are going to do.

The 50m penalty needs to be scrapped and the 15m penalty brought back. The biggest attrocity is that 50 meters doesn't scale with the larger/smaller grounds, 50m at the SCG is like giving away 75m at Subiaco.
