3AW raised some interesting points today re the umpiring. Jimmy Bartel and Tim Lane were talking about how the game was umpired all night to the letter of the law eg the Bolton 50 the Rioli free on the boundary
But then at the end of the game when the free is there, all the commentators are saying let’s apply common sense!!!!

Where was the common sense for the other 119 minutes of the game?

There were a few things that were overlooked as well. Remember Bolton getting pinged for 50m last week as he dropped the ball whilst getting up, rather than giving it to the Dons player?

Callum Mills did the dame thing 3 times last night and no call.

Sam Reid at the start of the game gets the softest hold free ever but McCartin spends the next 120 minutes holding and scragging Jack with no penalty.

I reckon an umpire is sitting upstairs watching and making a decision.

I was listening to some radio on Friday of the Giesh when he was head of umpiring and it was quite refreshing. He’d actually acknowledge when the umps had fu#%ed up. I reckon we’ve regressed from then (15 years ago) things are worse now

That campaigner used to trial the new rules on us in the pre-season, we were the AFLs guinea pigs, **** him (pretty sure that came out as fact!).
To think we are in a worse position now, **** this, how pathetic are the AFL now?

To complicate matters the Mrs is a mad demon supporter so she loves the media sucking off the game while all the mainstream media currently infuriates me. So I check the scores last night and see the usual fuking bullshit AGAIN! How else could they justify the pre game odds on that game. When the Oppo captain reckons that it is 50 then, to me, it qualifies as common sense that it is 50. AFL house and their media concubine released press announcements won't make any difference after that.

Kanetoad Cornes reckons the 50 shouldn’t have been paid because it was dissent against Jack Riewoldt.

So Cornes reckons the umpires needed to look into the future and see that if they didn’t pay the 50 Jack Riewoldt would disagree with that decision….and therefore this justifies them not paying the 50m in the first place.

That is some next level reasoning right there. Because of course if they paid the 50m Riewoldt having that decision reversed for dissenting a decision in his team’s favour would have been a universe first and last occurrence.

So if Cornes was the umpire he would have explained with a straight face: “Jack it might have been 50m but I am not paying it because I know that if I don’t pay it you will dissent, therefore I am reversing the 50m, free kick Sydney.”

The controlling umpire in that vision was speaking by microphone to the non-controlling umpire who actually made the free kick call (Stevic I think, who was also the senior umpire) - interesting in itself.

If he was the controlling umpire still (the guy on camera at the foot of the free kick), I question why he felt the need to ask whether the 50 was applicable or not once he had determined what the free kick was for (presumably he missed it) - he remains the controlling umpire from my knowledge - it isn't ceded. Cornes rationale is even more loopy as a consequence!
